NFL NFC Players of the Week – Week 17

SEAHAWKS RB RASHAAD PENNY, SAINTS DE CAMERON JORDAN & CARDINALS K MATT PRATER NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 17

Running back RASHAAD PENNY of the Seattle Seahawks, defensive end CAMERON JORDAN of the New Orleans Saints and kicker MATT PRATER of the Arizona Cardinals are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played in Week 17 (Jan 2-3).

OFFENSE: RB RASHAAD PENNY, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

  • Penny had a career-high 185 scrimmage yards (career-high 170 rushing, 15 receiving) and two rushing touchdowns in the Seahawks’ Week 17 victory. It marked the most rushing yards by an NFC player in Week 17.
  • This is the first Offensive Player of the Week award for Penny and he joins Shaun Alexander (seven-time winner) and Chris Warren (two-time) as the only Seahawks running backs to win Offensive Player of the Week.
  • Penny joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk (eight-time winner) and Ronnie Hillman (Week 17, 2015) as the only former San Diego State running backs to earn the award.

DEFENSE: DE CAMERON JORDAN, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

  • Jordan had eight tackles with a season-high 3.5 sacks in the Saints’ Week 17 win over Carolina, the most sacks by an NFC player in Week 17. He ranks third among active players with 106 sacks.
  • This is Jordan’s fourth-career Defensive Player of the Week award and second this season (Week 15). He joins Arizona’s Chandler Jones (Weeks 1 & 11) and Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt (Weeks 6, 13 & 17) as the only players to earn the award multiple times this season.
    • 2017: Week 6
    • 2019: Week 13
    • 2021: Weeks 15,17
  • Jordan is the only former California Golden Bear to win Defensive Player of the Week at least four times.

SPECIAL TEAMS: K MATT PRATER, ARIZONA CARDINALS

  • In Week 11, Prater converted all four of his field goals – from 24, 53, 26 and 38 yards – and his lone point after attempt for a total of 13 points in the Cardinals’ 25-22 victory over the Cowboys.
  • This is Prater’s 14th-career Special Teams Player of the Week award and second this season (Week 6):
    • 2008 (with Denver): Week 5
    • 2009 (with Denver): Week 12

  • Prater joins Adam Vinatieri (19-time winner) as the only kickers with at least 14 Player of the Week awards.
