NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 29, 2022

0

* The Devils and Golden Knights both earned their 10th road win of the season, with New Jersey becoming the third club in NHL history to reach the mark in 11 or fewer games (BUF: 10 GP in 2006-07 & BOS: 11 GP in 1929-30).

Mitchell Marner and Jason Robertson each found the back of the net to extend their point streaks, both securing the second-longest run in their respective franchise’s history in the process.

* The Islanders and Kraken will both aim to extend win streaks Tuesday, with Seattle looking to establish a franchise benchmark with its sixth consecutive victory.

GOALTENDERS BACK DEVILS, GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO NHL-LEADING 10TH ROAD WIN
Vitek Vanecek (35 saves) and Logan Thompson (26 saves) each stood their ground and backstopped the Devils (19-4-0, 38 points) and Golden Knights (17-6-1, 35 points) to their 10th road win of the season, with New Jersey capturing two points in each of their past 10 contests as the visitor.

* New Jersey also concluded the month of November with a 13-1-0 record in 14 contests. Only four teams in NHL history have recorded more wins in a single calendar month: Colorado (15 in Jan. 2022), Boston (15 in March 2014), Pittsburgh (15 in March 2013) and Columbus (14 in Dec. 2016).

Vanecek improved to 11-2-0 through his first 15 appearances with the Devils (2.12 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO) and ranks second in goals-against average in 2022-23 (min. 5 GP), behind only Boston’s Linus Ullmark (2.00 GAA). Only one other goaltender in Devils/Scouts/Rockies history has captured 11 wins through their 15 appearances with the franchise: Sean Burke (11-2-0 in 15 GP from 1987-88 – 1988-89).

* Thompson, who posted an 8-2-0 mark in November (2.88 GAA, .909 SV%), fell one victory shy of the most by a Golden Knights goaltender in a single calendar month (Marc-Andre Fleury: 9-4-0 in Nov. 2018). Six of his eight victories since Nov. 1 have come as the visitor.

DID YOU KNOW?
While USA soccer fans get set to cheer on their team during its 2022 World Cup game Tuesday, the Hughes family has a connection of their own to international soccer events – Jack’s mom, Ellen, was a sideline reporter for ESPN at the 1999 Women’s World Cup of soccer during a time when she was on air with the Big Ten network soccer package. Ellen was also a successful tri-sport athlete at the University of New Hampshire, playing hockey, soccer and lacrosse, and was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team while also representing her country at the 1992 World Hockey Championships.

MARNER, ROBERTSON CONTINUE STREAKING WAYS IN MAPLE LEAFS, STARS VICTORIES
Mitchell Marner (6-17—23 in 17 GP) and Jason Robertson (17-12—29 in 16 GP) each found the score sheet and played pivotal parts in helping the Maple Leafs and Stars improve to 10-1-3 (23 points) and 8-3-3 (19 points), respectively, in November.

* Marner (1-0—1) scored the winning goal to move within one game of the longest point streak in Maple Leafs history, behind Darryl Sittler (18 GP in 1977-78) and Eddie Olczyk (18 GP in 1989-90). Marner is also the 12th different skater with a game-winning tally for Toronto this season, tied with Boston and New Jersey for the most among all teams.

* Robertson (1-0—1) scored to extend his point streak to 16 games dating to Oct. 27 (17-12—29), the second-longest run in Stars/North Stars history behind Brian Bellows (20 GP from Jan. 11 to Feb. 21, 1986). With just two days left in November, Robertson (15-11—26 since Nov. 1) can become the first Stars/North Stars player to lead the League in both goals and points in a calendar month.

STAMKOS CLOSES IN ON 1,000-POINT MILESTONE WITH OVERTIME WINNER
After both the Sabres and Lightning rallied from two-goal deficits to force overtime, it was Steven Stamkos (2-1—3) who netted the game winner to help Tampa Bay (13-7-1, 27 points) earn its first multi-goal comeback victory of 2022-23.

* Stamkos boosted his career totals to 493-505—998 (943 GP) and is poised to become the first player to reach 1,000 points with Tampa Bay. Should the Lightning captain reach the milestone in his next 10 contests, he will trail only Sidney Crosby (757 GP), Evgeni Malkin (848 GP) and Alex Ovechkin (880 GP) for the fewest games to 1,000 points among all active skaters.

Nikita Kucherov (0-3—3) recorded his NHL-leading third three-assist game of the season, with each of those performances coming within his past four contests. Kucherov is the franchise leader in three-assist outings (28 GP) and has recorded the second-most instances among all players since his NHL debut in 2013-14, trailing only Connor McDavid (33 GP).

BOUCHARD’S LATE GOAL FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
The Monday edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured a back-and-forth contest between the Oilers and Panthers that saw Evan Bouchard score the game-tying goal in the final five seconds of regulation before Connor McDavid (1-2—3) capped off his three-point performance with an assist on Leon Draisaitl’s overtime winner.

WINNING STREAKS AND HOMECOMINGS HIGHLIGHTED IN A NINE-GAME SLATE TUESDAY
The Islanders (10-4-0) and Kraken (9-1-1), two of the top five winningest teams in the month of November, will both look to extend their four- and five-game win streaks, respectively, while Matthew Tkachuk makes his return to Calgary – the city he spent his first six seasons with – for the first time since being traded to Florida in the offseason.

* The Islanders enter Tuesday having won each of their last four outings and are one of four teams with 10-plus victories in November (NJD: 13, BOS: 10 & TOR: 10) – already double their wins from last month (5-4-0, 10 points in October). They can become the third team this season to have two different winning streaks of at least five games (also 5 GP from Oct. 26 – Nov. 3), joining the Bruins (7 GP from Oct. 20 – Nov. 3 & Nov. 7-21) and Kraken (5 GP from Oct. 29 – Nov. 8 & Nov. 17 – present).

* The Kraken hold the League’s longest active winning streak and can establish a new franchise benchmark should they win their sixth straight Tuesday. Seattle has also won its last five contests on the road, boosting its record as a visitor to 7-1-1 (.833 P%) – the third-highest road point percentage in 2022-23, behind only New Jersey (10-1-0, .909 P%) and Vegas (10-1-1, .875 P%).

* Tkachuk, who was selected by the Flames in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft (No. 6 overall), will make his return to Calgary for the first time since the Panthers acquired him in the offseason in a blockbuster trade with Jonathan Huberdeau, who already made his emotional return to South Florida. Tkachuk ranked second in goals (152), assists (230) and points (382) over his tenure with the Flames from 2016-17 to 2021-22 and departed after a career-best season which saw him post 42-62—104. Tkachuk will aim to post multi-point outings in each of his first two games against his former club, after recording 1-1— 2 on Nov. 19.

RYAN C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
UTSA (10-2, 8-0 C-USA), which enters its second week ranked in various polls, this week at No. 23 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 24 in the USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll, clinched the right to host the 2022 Ryan Conference USA Championship Game on Friday, Dec. 2, when it knocked off Rice 41-7 on Nov. 19 in Houston. North Texas (7-5, 6-2 C-USA) punched its ticket during the final week of the regular season with a 21-17 win at home against Rice. The 2022 Ryan Conference USA Championship Game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network, beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT.

This marks UTSA’s second straight trip to the C-USA title game, while North Texas makes its second appearance, and first since 2017. UTSA is looking to defend its 2021 championship, while UNT is seeking its first. This will be the 11th all-time meeting between the schools (series tied 5-5) and second meeting this season, as UTSA came from behind in the final moments of a wild, 31-27 win on Oct. 22 in San Antonio to remain unbeaten in league play.

UTSA captured the regular season C-USA crown by winning all eight league contests. Roadrunners head coach Jeff Traylor has weathered countless injuries throughout the season and is looking to lead UTSA to its second straight Conference USA title, and UTSA will be heading to a bowl for the third time in as many seasons under the former Gilmer High School coaching legend. The Roadrunners are led offensively by the three-headed monster of QB Frank Harris, WR Zakhari Franklin and WR Joshua Cephus. Harris has completed nearly 70% of his passes for 3,524 yards with 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He’s also a major threat on the ground for the Roadrunners, having carried 104 times for 539 yards and eight more scores. Franklin (76 catches for 956 yards and 11 touchdowns) and Cephus (76 catches for 901 yards and six touchdowns) are Harris’ primary targets and a huge component of the offense that leads the league in scoring (37.9 ppg). Defensively, LB Jamal Ligon leads the team in tackles with 79 (36 solo) and also has 4.5 TFL, four quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a pair of forced fumbles. DBs Clifford Chattman and Corey Mayfield, Jr. lead the team with three interceptions apiece, while LB Trey Moore leads the team in both TFL (12.5) and sacks (6.0). K Jared Sackett (19-24 on field goals) and P Lucas Dean (45.28 yards per attempt, with 15 inside the 20 and 13 of 50+ yards) are difference makers in the kicking game as well for the ‘Runners.

North Texas makes its first trip to the championship game since 2017, and did so by winning six of eight league games, including the win over Rice last week to clinch a berth in the title game. Seth Littrell’s Mean Green have rebounded from a difficult non-conference schedule to vie for the league title and have done so with a very productive offense led by its QB Austin Aune and a very talented running game. Aune has thrown for 3,115 yards and 31 touchdowns (just one shy of the program’s single-season record, set by Mason Fine in 2017). North Texas boasts the second-ranked rushing attack in the conference, and 22nd in the country at 204.2 yards per game. WR Jyaire Shorter has caught 20 passes for 550 yards and nine touchdowns, while Roderic Burns leads all pass-catchers with 36 receptions for 644 yards and a score. A pair of talented TEs are a major component of the Mean Green offense as well – Var’Keyes Gumms has 31 catches for 438 yards and five touchdowns, while Jake Roberts has hauled in 23 passes for 342 yards and two more scores. Five running backs have 100 yards or more, and RB Ikaika Ragsdale and Isaiah Johnson have combined for nearly 800 yards and six touchdowns. Defensively it all starts with senior LB KD Davis, who leads the conference with 118 tackles (63 solo) to go along with 3.0 TFL, 1.0 sack, an interception, four quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. DB Ridge Texada leads the team with three interceptions and 15 pass break-ups for an improved secondary. K Ethan Mooney is a weapon in special teams, having made 15-18 field goals on his way to the Lou Groza Award semifinalist list.

CHAMPIONSHIP TRENDS

  • UTSA (37.9 ppg) and North Texas (34.5 ppg) rank first and third in scoring offense in Conference USA, and rank 13th and 25th, respectively in the FBS. These teams showcased their quick-score ability on Oct. 22 in the Alamodome as the teams combined for 35 points in the fourth quarter, when the Roadrunners came out on top 31-27.
  • Friday’s game pits two of the league’s top quarterbacks against one another – UTSA’s Frank Harris (ranks fifth in the country in total
offense – 338.6 yards per game) and North Texas’ Austin Aune (leads the nation in passing yards per completion – 15.50).
  • Since C-USA began holding a conference championship in 2005, the host school is 12-5 all-time.
  • UTSA is only the second team in C-USA history to host the title game in back-to-back seasons (WKU in 2015 and 2016).
  • 2022 marked the first season since the league adopted a championship game that the league operated without divisions.

UTSA BEATS UTEP 34-31 IN THRILLER IN SAN ANTONIO
USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll No. 25 UTSA (10-2, 6-2 C-USA) came back to beat UTEP (5-7, 3-5 CUSA) 34-31 on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio to complete a perfect 8-0 record in league play. The Miners raced out to a 24-0 lead in the first half, but the game turned on a pick-six just before the half by LB Dadrian Taylor, who jumped a route and returned it 73 yards for a score, cutting the deficit to 24-14. UTSA then mounted the comeback, as K Jared Sackett connected on a game-winning 28-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.

MTSU CLOSES REGULAR SEASON AT 7-5 WITH 33-28 AT FIU

The Panthers held a fourth quarter lead at 28-27, but a pair of fourth quarter interceptions doomed their attempt to finish their season in the win column. One of those interceptions came in the final three minutes while the Panthers were nursing a one point lead, as Middle Tennessee DB Jakobe Thomas intercepted a pass on third down and scampered 28-yards to paydirt to put the Blue Raiders on top. His second interception in the final seconds sealed the win for Middle, who now await their bowl fate, having closed the season winners of three straight and four of the last five. Fellow DB Decorian Patterson also picked off a pair of passes in the win.

Boxing Preview: Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2-0, 14 KO’s) vs Samuel Carmona (8-0-0, 4 KO’s)

0

Julio Cesar Martinez will defend his WBC World Flyweight title against Samuel Carmona at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona on December 3, live worldwide on DAZN – the co-main event bout as Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez meet in a trilogy clash for the WBC and Ring Magazine Super-Flyweight titles.

Martinez (18-2 14 KOs) puts his title on the line for the fifth time since landing the vacant belt in December 2019, and the fiery Mexican is back in action for the first time since challenging one half of the headline fight, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez for the WBC Diamond Super-Flyweight title in March.

‘El Rey’ was set to face long-running rival McWilliams Arroyo in a rematch in Glendale, but as neck and back issues have ruled the Puerto Rican out, the door is opened for Carmona (8-0 4 KOs) to land his first World title shot. The unbeaten Spaniard, who represented his country in the 2016 Olympic Games, has cruised to 8-0 in the paid ranks since turning pro in September 2019 and landed the WBA International title at 112lbs in just his fourth pro fight.

“I’m excited to be getting back in the ring and defending my WBC belt again,” said Martinez. “It’s unfortunate the Arroyo rematch is not happening, but it’s a huge chance for Samuel and he’s young and hungry, so you know he will bring everything on the night.

“But as we say, with everything except fear, I will rise to this challenge and show that next year, we are coming for all the belts.”

“I am very happy to fight Martinez,” said Carmona. “I am going to work hard to bring victory to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Spain. You are going to see a great Carmona on December 3.”

Also announced for the card is another Flyweight showdown as Mexico’s Joselito Velazquez and Nicaragua Cristofer Rosales clash over ten rounds. Velazquez (15-0-1 10 KOs) steps back through the ropes for the first time since landing a sixth round stoppage win over Jose Soto in Las Vegas on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol, and ‘El Huracan’, ranked #4 with the IBF and #13 with the WBC will be gunning for and impressive win over the former World champion to enter the World title picture in 2023.

Rosales (34-6 21 KOs) has his own designs on recapturing a World strap as he targets a third straight win to add further momentum to his drive to become a two-time World ruler. The 28 year old held the WBC crown in 2018 and faced Julio Cesar Martinez for the vacant belt in Phoenix in 2019, and will be aiming to notch the first win of the night for Nicaraguan boxing, before Chocolatito in the main event.

“I’m happy to be fighting on DAZN,” said Velazquez. “I know Cristofer is a tough fighter but I’m hungry for success and I’m ready to stand out and put on a great performance. I’m showing up to please the fans so I’m going to give everything I have.”

“Thank God I’m fine, this fight came at a good time,” said Rosales. “I am training conscientiously; I want to show off and shine again. You can expect the usual Cristofer Rosales, I will go to deliver everything, I am proudly Nicaraguan, and I am going to die with my boots on. I am motivated, I come from the ashes, and I will rise like the Phoenix. I am preparing myself to the fullest to show off that day.

“I’ll go looking for the knockout, I know it’s not that easy, but I’m going to look for it. I don’t know in which round, but I will always look for it. He has his plan, but I’m going to throw him. That night we will see who of the two will turn off the light and stay watching fireworks.”

Diego Pacheco faces a big step up in his fourth fight of 2022, as he defends his WBC USNBC Super-Middleweight title against the unbeaten Timur Kerefov. Pacheco (160- 13 KOs) stopped Enrique Collazo in five rounds to land the title in Las Vegas in September on the undercard of the trilogy clash between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin, seeing the rangy Los Angeles talent record a 13th stoppage win in 16 fights unbeaten.

Kerefov (13-0 7 KOs) will pose a serious threat to Pacheco’s desire to retain his title and unbeaten record, with the Detroit-based 32 year old unbeaten in 13 pro fights since debut in September 2018, having turned pro as a heavily decorated amateur champion who won numerous tournaments and 298 of his 310 unpaid fights.

“I’m very happy with my work the way I’ve been preparing with my team for these fights,” said Pacheco. “I am grateful for the opportunity and this one will be a special one, going up against a tough undefeated opponent in front of a big crowd in Arizona to close out the year with another great win. Don’t miss it.”

“I was looking for the fight that somehow will elevate my standing in pro boxing ranks,” said Kerefov. “Thanks to Eddie Hearn and DAZN, I have got that opportunity and I will do everything to take it with both hands.”

After a successful debut in Cleveland, Ohio tonight (November 12), former Brazilian amateur star Beatriz Ferreira will fight for the second time as a pro in Glendale. Ferreira (1-0) put fellow Brazilian Taynna Cardoso down in the first and third rounds with body shots, winning out 40-34 on all three cards in the first female fight in Ohio to be boxed over three-minute rounds.

World Cup Preview: Iran at USA

The United States have a chance to qualify for the World Cup knockouts for the seventh time in history. The only way that can happen is if they beat Iran on Tuesday afternoon. The thing is that Iran are one point ahead of them, so anything but a win would mean the USMNT having to pack their bags.

Iran Players Encouraged by a 2-0 Win Over Wales
The 2022 World Cup started badly for Iran, who got thrashed by England 6-2. In Round 2, however, they won all three points against Wales. As a result, they’re now second in Group B, with one point behind England and one point more than Team US. Wales are sitting at the bottom of the group table with just one point.

Iran got their three points by beating Gareth Bale & Co. 2-0 on Friday. If you didn’t watch the game, you might think it was a dominant performance by Iran, but that wasn’t exactly the case. Iran and Wales were two even until late in the game.

What happened there was that Wales’ goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey received a red card in the 86th minute of the game. With 10 men on the pitch, Wales had to get on the back foot. They defended ferociously until Iran finally managed to break their defensive wall in the 8th minute of the stoppage time.

Being 1-0 down, Gareth Bale and his teammates had no other option but to go all-out attack. That didn’t pay off – Iran got them on the break scoring the second goal in the final minute of the game.

Now’s the Time for USMNT Stars to Shine
The game with Iran is when the USMNT players need to show what they’re made of. After two draws, now is the time for the Americans to win. Anything other than win would mean their World Cup adventure is over.

So, can they do it? In the first two games, they showed that they do have an excellent midfield. They were able to shut down the playmakers of Wales and England, letting them create only a limited number of chances.

We expect them to do the same against Iran. That said, the real challenge in this game will be to find the net. Wales failed to do so against Iran, will Americans do better?

The USMNT do have some talented attackers on the roster – Christian Pulisic, Timothy Weah, Josh Sargent, and others. They just need to be more clinical.

Iran vs USMNT Prediction
The USMNT need to go for a win in this game. For the first time in this tournament, we’re going to see them attack with all they got. And they do have a lot of power in the final third. That’s why we expect them to get to their first win of the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday.

Boxing Preview: Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23 KO’s) vs Derek Chisora (33-12-0, 23 KOs)

0

In what will be a sensational heavyweight double-header, the WBC and lineal world champion Tyson Fury will defend his crown against long-standing rival Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday December 3 on a night where WBA world champion Daniel Dubois will make a first defence of his belt against Kevin Lerena, exclusively on BT Sport Box Office (UK & RoI) and live on ESPN+ (U.S.). Fury, who intends on fighting Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship in the first part of 2023, will once again perform on UK soil following his April knockout of mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte in front of 94,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Promoted by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, in association with Top Rank, this will be the third meeting between Fury and Chisora. They first met in July 2011 with the British and Commonwealth titles at stake, and Fury prevailed by unanimous decision.

“I am thrilled to be delivering a Tyson Fury world title defence in front of the British fans in London,” said promoter Frank Warren. “Tyson clearly conquered America across his trilogy with Deontay Wilder and there is also huge demand to stage his fights from sites across the world.

WHEN IS FURY VS. CHISORA? DATE, START TIME
Date: Saturday, December 3
Main card: 12 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. GMT
Main event ringwalks (approx): 5 p.m. ET / 10 p.m. GMT

The fight will be staged at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.
The main card is set to get underway at 12 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. GMT with the main event ringwalks scheduled for 5 p.m. ET / 10 p.m. GMT The fight will be broadcast on BT in the UK, and for viewers in the US they can watch it on ESPN+ – click here to sign up now. “Tyson wanted to fight in his home country again this year following his special night at Wembley Stadium in April. This brings us to the magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a match against an old rival in Derek Chisora.

“Derek, also a big favourite with British fans, has reinvented himself in recent years and Tyson has long stated his wish to fight him for a third time.

“Tyson can’t afford any slip-up in this fight as he has the much-publicized undisputed match-up with Usyk in the New Year which we’re really looking forward to.

“I am also delighted that we have added Daniel Dubois to the card with a first defence of his WBA belt against Kevin Lerena. It makes it a real heavyweight night and Daniel represents the best of the new generation coming through.”

“Whenever Tyson Fury fights, it is a major event, and I expect him to once again put on a spectacular show for the fans,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “There are talks about what’s next for Tyson, but the first order of business is a battle against an extraordinarily tough fighter in Derek Chisora.”

Todd Kline, Chief Commercial Officer, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “Our stadium has firmly established itself as a leading venue in London for major sports and entertainment events.

“The AJ-Usyk fight in front of a record crowd here in Tottenham was a truly unforgettable spectacle and we are extremely excited to bring World Heavyweight Championship boxing back to N17 on 3 December.

“The World Cup break leaves us in a unique position of having no sporting action at the stadium between November 13 – December 31 – what better way to satisfy the demand for world-class live sport before the Premier League returns.”

In between Fury fights, Chisora (33-12, 23 KOs) challenged for the WBC title and gave a good account of himself against Vitali Klitschko in Munich, before entering into a grudge match at West Ham United’s Upton Park against another British rival in David Haye.

He rebuilt from those setbacks by winning the WBO International, European and WBA International titles in a five-fight winning streak, setting up a return fight with Fury that took place at London’s
ExCel Arena in November 2014.

In recent years, Chisora has been involved in two close encounters with Dillian Whyte and one with Usyk, while defeating Carlos Takam, Artur Szpilka and David Price. Last year, he lost a pair of tight affairs with Joseph Parker.

His last fight was an exciting points victory over former world title challenger Kubrat Pulev in July.

Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) remains an undefeated champion and completed his remarkable return from the boxing wilderness with a resounding rematch victory over Deontay Wilder in February 2020, with the Bronze Bomber saved by his corner in the seventh round.

A trilogy battle followed eight months later, which delivered a Las Vegas thriller where Wilder was put down in rounds three and 10 and Fury down twice in round four before knocking out the former WBC ruler in the 11th.

The 25-year-old Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs) seized his world title belt in June when he travelled to Miami and demolished previous champion Trevor Bryan, inflicting a first defeat on the American via a fourth-round stoppage.

Lerena (28-1, 14 KOs), 30, is a recent addition to the heavyweight ranks, having established himself as the IBO world cruiserweight champion, making six defences of the title. At heavyweight he has recorded victories over Patrick Ferguson, Bogdan Dinu and Mariusz Wach, winning the WBA and IBO Intercontinental titles in the process.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (12-9) at Portland Trail Blazers (11-9)

0

With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George both ailing, Ivica Zubac took a whirl at being a star attraction and it was one for the memory books.

The 25-year-old Zubac will try to follow up the best performance of his career when the Los Angeles Clippers visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

Zubac played like a man possessed Sunday during a 114-100 home victory over the Indiana Pacers as he scored 31 points and collected a career-best 29 rebounds.

The 7-foot Zubac was one board short of having the third 30-point, 30-rebound outing in the NBA in 40 years. Michael Cage was the last Clippers player to grab 30 rebounds in a game, doing so on April 24, 1988, against the Seattle SuperSonics.

The only downer for Zubac was fouling out with 3:40 remaining.

While legendary Wilt Chamberlain used to routinely post 30-30 games during his career, Zubac fell just short of joining Dwight Howard (2018) and Kevin Love (2010) as the only players to do it since Moses Malone in 1982.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue was thrilled to see his big man step up.

Zubac, who averages 10.5 points and 11.6 rebounds, figures to have some opportunities against Portland as George (hamstring) will miss his fifth straight game and Leonard (ankle) will sit out for the fourth consecutive game.

It isn’t yet known if Leonard will play Wednesday at Utah in the second game of the back-to-back.

Luke Kennard (calf) will miss his seventh consecutive game. John Wall (knee) also will be held out.

Portland also isn’t at full strength as star guard Damian Lillard will miss his fifth straight game with his second calf injury of the season.

The Trail Blazers have lost five of their past six, ending a 1-3 road trip Sunday with a 111-97 loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Blazers’ Jerami Grant scored 29 points to follow his career-best 44-point outing in Friday’s 132-129 overtime win over the New York Knicks. Grant is averaging 21.5 points this season and has topped 20 points nine times this month.

But Grant wasn’t enjoying his Sunday showing as Portland’s defense struggled against the Nets.

Portland started the season with 10 wins in 14 games but with the recent struggles, now sits just two games above .500.

Portland has struggled with the Clippers over the last three seasons, losing nine of the 10 matchups.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors (11-10) at Dallas Mavericks (9-10)

0

Seeing the Golden State Warriors might be the inspiration the Dallas Mavericks need to end a four-game losing streak when last year’s Western Conference finalists meet for the first time this season on Tuesday night in Dallas.

The Mavericks weren’t convinced the better team had won after the Warriors took advantage of a cold-shooting Dallas squad to claim a berth in the 2022 NBA Finals with a 4-1 triumph. Golden State outshot the Mavericks 51.8% to 43.7% from the field, allowing the Warriors to overcome nine more turnovers and 14 fewer free-throw points in the series.

Since they last met in June, the Mavericks have made the most significant transaction, replacing steady guard Jalen Brunson (lost to the New York Knicks in free agency) with talented big man Christian Wood, who came over from Houston.

Wood is tied for second on the team in scoring (17.1) and second in rebounds (7.6) while shooting 56.6 percent overall and 43.9 percent on 3-pointers. Wood had 21 points in Sunday’s 124-115 loss at Milwaukee and put up a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double in a defeat four nights earlier at Boston at the start of the Mavericks’ three-game trip.

Those losses don’t sting as much as earlier defeats at the hands of a five-win Houston Rockets club and a Denver Nuggets team missing Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon.

The nationally televised affair pits the league’s top two scorers in the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic (33.1 points a game) and Warriors’ Stephen Curry (31.4).

Doncic outscored Curry by an average of 32.0-23.8 in last year’s playoff series, but Curry was far more efficient, shooting 44.4 percent overall and 43.9 from 3-point range, while Doncic finished at 41.5 and 34.0 percent.

Like last June, Curry has lately been getting much more support than Doncic. He’s been almost five points below his average while putting up 26.7 points a night during Golden State’s current three-game winning streak, making 14 of his 34 3-point attempts (41 percent).

Meanwhile, Klay Thompson has heated up with a 19.7 scoring average and 14 threes during the run, while Andrew Wiggins has chipped in with 22.7 points and 12 threes.

Thompson has shot 52 percent on 3-pointers in the three games, Wiggins 55 percent. Newcomer Donte DiVincenzo got into the long-distance act Sunday with a season-best four 3-pointers in eight attempts in 137-114 romp at Minnesota.

The win over the Timberwolves was just the Warriors’ second on the road in 11 tries, a big reason they are residing ninth in the Western Conference.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks (9-11) at Detroit Pistons (5-17)

0

The New York Knicks have reached the 20-game mark and they’re not close to living up to their expectations.

New York has wallowed in mediocrity, unable to put together a solid stretch of performances. The Knicks have lost four of their last five, dropping to 9-11 as they make a quick visit to Detroit to face the Pistons on Tuesday.

The last two losses, both at home, have been particularly excruciating. They lost to Portland 132-129 in overtime, then fell to Memphis 127-123.

Jalen Brunson, the pricey free agent signed to get New York back into the postseason, missed two shots in the lane during the closing seconds against Memphis. Those misses came after Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant gave his team the lead with a putback.

Brunson finished with 30 points, the third consecutive time he reached the 30-point mark.

The Knicks already have beaten the Pistons twice, both at Madison Square Garden. The first meeting was a 130-106 blowout on Oct. 21. Then on Nov. 11, R.J. Barrett had a 30-point game in a 121-112 victory.

Following Tuesday’s contest, New York returns home for four games.

The Pistons have the worst record in the league (5-17), in part because they’ve been decimated by injuries. Star guard Cade Cunningham is pondering season-ending shin surgery.

A trio of other starters missed their 102-94 loss to Cleveland on Sunday. Bojan Bogdanovic and Jaden Ivey sat out with knee soreness while Isaiah Stewart was sidelined by a toe injury.

Saddiq Bey, the team’s other regular starter, scored 15 points after missing the previous four games due to an ankle injury.

Detroit led by five entering the fourth quarter but were then outscored 29-16.

The Pistons shot 53.8 percent in the first half and finished with a 45.6 percentage.

Free-throw shooting played a role as the Pistons missed 12 of 26 attempts in the eight-point defeat.
