Thursday Night Capsule – Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots

0

A key AFC East matchup kicks off Week 13 of the 2022 NFL season on Thursday, December 1 (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video) as the Buffalo Bills (8-3) visit the New England Patriots (6-5). New England holds the all-time regular-season advantage, 76-46-1, with the road team winning each of the past three meetings. The teams split last year’s regular-season series, as the Patriots beat the Bills in Buffalo, 14-10, in Week 13, and Buffalo won in New England, 33-21, in Week 16. The teams also met in the Wild Card round of last year’s AFC playoffs, with the Bills defeating the Patriots in Buffalo, 47-17. It marked the second-ever postseason meeting between the two clubs, as quarterback JOSH ALLEN set career highs in touchdown passes (five) and passer rating (157.6) in the victory. Running back DEVIN SINGLETARY and tight end DAWSON KNOX each scored two touchdowns in the win.

Last week on Thanksgiving, Allen led a four-play drive in the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter that led to a game-winning 45-yard field goal by TYLER BASS, as Buffalo defeated Detroit, 28-25, for its second-consecutive victory. Allen totaled 331 yards (253 passing, 78 rushing) and three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in the win, and he is one of two quarterbacks in the league (LAMAR JACKSON) with at least 250 passing yards and 75 rushing yards in multiple games this season. In his past three starts at New England, Allen has nine touchdown passes with zero interceptions for a 115.3 passer rating. Wide receiver STEFON DIGGS aims for his third in a row with a touchdown catch and has at least five catches and 75 receiving yards in six of his past seven. Diggs has four touchdown catches in his past three games against New England. Singletary rushed for 72 yards last week and aims for his third in a row with at least 80 scrimmage yards. He has a touchdown in two of his past three overall and three of his past four against the division.

Buffalo enters Week 13 ranked second in the league with 13 interceptions this season, led by safety JORDAN POYER (four interceptions in seven games). Last week, Poyer led the team with a season-high 10 tackles and he aims for his fourth in a row with at least five tackles. Linebacker MATT MILANO has at least one tackle for loss in each of his past five games and leads the team with 11 tackles for loss this season, his second-straight year with at least 10 in the category. Defensive tackle ED OLIVER had two tackles for loss, a sack and his first forced fumble and fumble recovery of the season on Thanksgiving. He aims for his third in a row with multiple tackles for loss.

In Week 12, New England quarterback MAC JONES recorded a career-high 382 passing yards, while also setting season-high marks in completions (28), touchdown passes (two) and passer rating (119.8). He aims for his fourth start in a row with no interceptions and his third consecutive start with a passer rating of 100-or-higher. Jones has recorded a passer rating of 100-or-higher in three of four career home starts against the division. Running back RHAMONDRE STEVENSON led the team with 112 scrimmage yards (career-high 76 receiving, 36 rushing) on Thanksgiving and added a career-high nine catches. He has at least six catches and 55 receiving yards in four of his past five and ranks third among running backs with a career-best 50 catches this season. Running back DAMIEN HARRIS rushed for 103 yards and had a career-high three rushing touchdowns in the teams’ last regular-season meeting. In each of his three career games against Buffalo, Harris has totaled at least 100 rushing yards with a rushing touchdown. Wide receiver JAKOBI MEYERS aims for his sixth in row against the division and third in row overall with at least 50 receiving yards, while wide receiver DAVANTE PARKER led the team with 80 receiving yards last week.

New England ranks second in the NFL this season with 37 sacks, led by linebacker MATTHEW JUDON, who paces the league with a career-high 13 sacks in 2022. Judon has 10 sacks in five home games this season and aims for his fifth in a row at home with at least 1.5 sacks. He has a sack in two of his past three against Buffalo. Linebacker JOSH UCHE had a sack on Thanksgiving and has a sack in three of his past four games. Defensive back JONATHAN JONES tied his career high with three passes defensed last week and recorded his team-leading third interception of the season. He aims for his fourth in a row with a pass defensed and has an interception in two of his past three games.

Prime Video will stream 15 Thursday Night Football games this season (Weeks 2-17, excluding Thanksgiving). The game will feature Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung on the call.

Pro Bowl Games Vote presented by Castrol will continue online and on web-enabled mobile phones at www.nfl.com/pro-bowl-games/vote or on club sites until Thursday, December 15. Fans can vote as often as they would like.

Starting December 1, fans will also be able to vote directly on Twitter for the final two weeks of Pro Bowl Games Vote. Throughout the week, The Pro Bowl Games will integrate new challenges where players showcase their football and non-football skills in unique competitions, and the NFL will use its social media platforms to showcase players’ incredible athletic feats and competitive spirit, while also highlighting their unique personalities away from the gridiron. The revamped programming allows the top stars to show off their skills and celebrate their accomplishments in a fun, memorable way, surrounded by their families and fans.

Catcher Agrees To 1-Year Contract

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Reds Vice President, General Manager Nick Krall today announced the signing of Covington Catholic High School graduate C Luke Maile (MAY-lee) to a 1-year contract through the 2023 season.

Maile, 31, originally was signed out of the University of Kentucky by the Tampa Bay Rays after he was selected in the eighth round of the June 2012 first-year player draft.

His father, Rich, played football at the University of Dayton and the University of Kentucky. His grandfather, Dick, was All-America in basketball at LSU.

Robertson, Morrissey and Sorokin Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Dallas Stars left wing Jason Robertson, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey and New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 27.

FIRST STAR – JASON ROBERTSON, LW, DALLAS STARS

Robertson topped the NHL with six goals in four contests (6-2—8) to move into first place in the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race and guide the Central Division-leading Stars (12-6-4, 28 points) to a 1-1-2 week. He scored twice, including the tying goal with 25.8 seconds remaining in regulation, in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche Nov. 21. Robertson potted two more goals in a 6-4 win against the Chicago Blackhawks Nov. 23. He then recorded 2-1—3, highlighted by two goals in the final 2:12 of regulation to force overtime, in a 5-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets Nov. 25. In doing so, Robertson became the third different player in Stars/North Stars history to register three consecutive multi-goal outings, following Dino Ciccarelli (3x) and Mike Modano (1x). Robertson finished the week with an assist on Dallas’ lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Avalanche Nov. 26, extending his point streak to a career-high 15 games dating to Oct. 27 (16-12—28). The 23-year-old Robertson, who compiled 41 goals in 2021-22 after placing second in Calder Memorial Trophy voting in 2020-21, has played in 22 total games this season, sitting among the League leaders in goals (1st; 18), points (2nd; 35) and shots on goal (6th; 96).

SECOND STAR – JOSH MORRISSEY, D, WINNIPEG JETS

Morrissey ranked first among defensemen with 3-4—7, highlighted by two overtime goals, across four outings to lift the Jets (13-6-1, 27 points) into second place in the Central Division via a 3-1-0 week. He posted his first career multi-goal game (440 GP) with two tallies, including his second career overtime winner, in a 4-3 triumph against the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 21. Morrissey assisted on Winnipeg’s lone goal in a 6-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild Nov. 23 before again scoring in overtime in a 5-4 victory against the Dallas Stars Nov. 25. He capped the week with three assists, the second such performance of his career (also Dec. 21, 2019 at MIN), in a 7-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Nov. 27. The 27-year-old Morrissey, who leads the Jets in scoring, has skated in 20 total contests this season, placing among the top NHL defensemen in overtime goals (t-1st; 2), game-winning goals (t-1st; 3), assists (3rd; 19) and points (4th; 23).

THIRD STAR – ILYA SOROKIN, G, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

The VGK road record stands at 9-1-1, the best road record in the NHL. 19 of Vegas’ 33 points have come on the road, including the 10 straight points the Golden Knights brought home after going 5-0-0 as the visiting team earlier this month. With their ninth win on enemy ice coming in Vancouver, the Golden Knights will look to extend it to 10 in Columbus on Monday night.

Jack of all Trades
Jack Eichel has points in 12 of the last 15 games for Vegas (8G-11A), including multiple-point efforts. His 26 points are tied for the seventh most in the league and his +16 rating is tops among all NHL forwards (third overall).

Martinez Block Party
Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez leads the NHL with 99 blocked shots in 23 games this season. Martinez has led the team in blocked shots in 16 of 23 games. After snapping his 114-game streak with at least one blocked shot on Wednesday, Martinez recorded 7 blocked shots in the first period on Friday against Seattle. Martinez also recently recorded a season high of nine blocked shots against the San Jose Sharks on November 15, matching his career high and the franchise record, which he shares with Deryk Engelland.

Aye-Aye Captain!
Captain Mark Stone matched his career-best goal streak with tallies in four straight games (5G-1A). Stone’s nine goals on the year are two off Jack Eichel’s team lead and he is fourth on the team in scoring with 18 points.

O from the D
Vegas defensemen have accounted for an NHL-leading 50 assists and 58 points total, which trail only San Jose. Both Alex Pietrangelo (T-4
th, 21 points) and Shea Theodore (12th, 17 points) are among the top 15 defensemen in scoring league-wide.

The Shorty King
Reilly Smith netted his third shorthanded goal of the season against St. Louis on November 12. Smith leads the league with his three shorties and Vegas is tied for first as the team with the most short handed goals this season with four. His 11 shorthanded goals since joining Vegas in 2017-18 are the most in franchise history.

Easy Steph-y
Chandler Stephenson has 19 points in Vegas’ 23 games, to go with three game-winning goals. Stephenson’s 63.8 faceoff win percentage ranks second in the NHL among all qualified skaters. Stephenson has recorded a point in five straight games twice this season including seven assists during his most recent point streak.

Spreading the Wealth
Nine Golden Knights have recorded 10 or more points this season, tied with four other teams for the most of any team in the league. Jack Eichel leads the club with 26 points, followed by Alex Pietrangleo with 21 points and Chandler Stephenson with 19 points.

Golden Knights Point Leaders

  1. Jack Eichel – 26 (11G, 15A)
  2. Alex Pietrangelo – 21 (3G, 18A)
  3. Chandler Stephenson – 19 (6G, 13A)
  4. Mark Stone – 18 (9G, 9A)
  5. Jonathan Marchessault – 17 (8G, 9A)
    Shea Theodore – 17 (3G, 14A)

Stingy Knights
The Golden Knights’ goaltender tandem of Logan Thompson and Adin Hill is one of the best in the NHL, as Vegas is seventh in team defense, allowing just 2.64 goals per game. Thompson is second in the league in wins (11) behind Boston’s Linus Ullmark (13). Thompson and Hill’s combined save percentage of .912 is sixth in the league. Last season, the Golden Knights ranked 15th in the league in team defense (2.98 goals allowed per game).

Against the Blue Jackets
Vegas’ contest with Columbus is the first of two meetings this season. The Golden Knights own a 3-5-0 record against the Blue Jackets, and went 1-1-0 in their series in 2021-22. Vegas has only won once at Nationwide Arena, on Nov. 5, 2019, in four trips. In their last meeting, the Golden Knights fell to the Blue Jackets in Columbus, 6-4, despite seeing scoring from Jonathan Marchessault, William Carrier, and Jack Eichel. Eichel owns 17 points (6-11—17) in 16 meetings against the Blue Jackets in his career.

BLUE JACKETS NOTES
HOME IN NOVEMBER
The Blue Jackets fell for a second consecutive game following a 3-2 loss to the Islanders on Friday. The club is now 4-3-1 in the last eight games overall and 4-3-0 in their past seven home games. Friday’s game concluded a stretch of eight consecutive games against Eastern Conference teams (4-2-1). The club, which had its game on Saturday at Nashville postponed due to flooding at Bridgestone Arena, plays its next two games against Western Conference teams; against Vegas on Monday and at Winnipeg on Friday. Monday’s game vs. the Golden Knights wraps up a now season-high seven-game homestand for the Blue Jackets (3-3-0).

TWO DIFFERENT STRETCHES
Nine of the club’s first 12 games were competed against teams that made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including facing off against the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche twice and Stanley Cup finalist once (Tampa Bay Lightning). The club is now in the middle of a stretch of 11-of-13 contests from November 10-December 7 played against teams that failed to make the postseason. The only playoff teams over the second stretch are Florida (Nov. 20) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 6).

FROM THE BLUELINE
CBJ blueliners have collected 7-19-26 in the last 14 outings and 11-25-36 in 20 games this season to rank eighth-T in the NHL in goals. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson tallied two assists on Nov. 17 vs. MTL for his first multi-point game as a Blue Jacket as well as his third career multi-assist and seventh career multi-point effort. He is now one point from 100 for his NHL career with 27-72-99 in 660 games. Vladislav Gavrikov notched his second career overtime winner and fifth career game-winning goal on Nov. 15 vs. the Flyers, finishing with 1-1-2, while also skating in a career-high 28:40 TOI (previous 28:20 on Apr. 22, 2022 vs. OTT). He became the fifth different defenseman in NHL history to score each of his first two or more goals of a season in overtime and is also one off the franchise record for overtime goals by a defenseman in a single season (3; Seth Jones, 2016-17 & 2018-19).

ROOKIE REPORT
The club currently has eight rookies on the roster with forwards Trey Fix-Wolansky, Liam Foudy, Kent Johnson and Carson Meyer along with defensemen Nick Blankenburg, Marcus Bjork and Jake Christiansen and goaltender Daniil Tarasov. The skaters have had a strong start to the season, combining for 8-14-22 in 20 games, including posting 1-2-3 on Friday vs. the Islanders. They have helped CBJ rank second-T among NHL teams in goals and fifth in points. Johnson, who notched his first career multi-point game on Friday with one goal and one assist, ranks third-T among NHL rookies in goals, points and points-per-game (.65; min. 10 GP) with 5-6-11 in 17 games. He has registered 2-3-5 in his last six outings and 5-5-10 in his past 14 contests played. Bjork, who recorded an assist on Friday, now has 0-2-2 in the past three games (overall 1-3-4 in seven GP). The blueliner tallied points in his first two NHL games after scoring his first career goal in his NHL debut on Nov. 12 at NY Islanders and picking up his first career assist on Nov. 15 vs. Philadelphia. He is the first blueliner and seventh player overall in franchise history to score in his debut.

CAPTAIN BOONE JENNER
Boone Jenner had his four-game points streak (4-2-6 from Nov. 15-20) and six-game home points streak (7-2-9 from Nov. 5-20) snapped on Wednesday vs. Montreal and now has 7-3-10 in the last nine contests overall. The forward ranks eighth-T in the NHL in goals scored at home this season with 8-5-13 in 14 outings and is 16th-T in goals scored in the month of November (seven). He also ranks eighth in the NHL in faceoff wins (246-of-434 faceoffs; 56.7 pct.). The 29-year-old, who was selected 37th overall at the 2011 NHL Draft, is the longest-tenured Blue Jacket in his 10th season with the club, including his second as the team’s captain. The forward skated in his 600th career game on Nov. 4 vs. Colorado, becoming just the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise. With his second goal on Nov.15 vs. Philadelphia, Jenner notched his 150th career goal with the Blue Jackets and became the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise, joining Rick Nash (289) and Cam Atkinson (213). He also ranks fifth on the franchise’s all-time list in points (298).

RK PLAYER TOTAL GP SEASONS WITH CBJ

  1. Rick Nash 674 2002-12 (9 seasons)
  2. Cam Atkinson 627 2011-21 (10 seasons)
  3. Boone Jenner 609 2013-current (10 seasons)
  4. Nick Foligno 599 2012-21 (9 seasons)
  5. David Savard 597 2011-21 (10 seasons)

HERE’S JOHNNY!
Left wing Johnny Gaudreau registered his team-leading third multi-assist and fifth multi-point effort with two assists on Friday and now has 2-9-11 in his last eight games. He has recorded 2-10-12 in 10 November games and is one assist shy of tying the franchise record for most assists in the month (Andrew Cassels in November 2002). The six-time All-Star leads the club in assists and scoring and ranks second in goals with 7-13-20 in 20 games while recording points in 13 of his contests. The winger has done most of his damage at home with 7-11-18 in 14 outings, ranking eighth-T in the NHL in points. He played in his 314th consecutive game on Friday, the third-longest active iron man streak in the NHL and trailing only Phil Kessel (1,005) and Brent Burns (701). The Salem, New Jersey native, who signed a seven-year contract with Columbus in July, has collected 217-412-629 in 622 NHL games, including a career-high 40-75-115 in 82 games with Calgary last season when he earned First Team All-NHL honors.

TOUGH TO REPLACE Z
Zach Werenski recorded his first multi-point game of the season with 1-1-2 in a win over Philadelphia on Nov. 10 to extend his points-streak to three-straight games (1-3-4) before leaving the with an upper body injury. Unfortunately, that was the last CBJ will likely see the club’s top defenseman this regular season as it was announced Friday that he suffered a separated shoulder and torn labrum and likely to miss six months. He led the club’s blueliners in goals, assists and points at the time of the injury with 3-5-8 in 13 games. The two-time NHL All-Star blueliner set single-season career highs in assists, points and time on ice and posted the third-most assists (tied) and points by a defenseman in a single season in franchise history with 11-37-48 and 25:40 TOI in 68 games in 2021-22.

UP IN CLEVELAND
Columbus’ AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, have kicked off the 2022-23 season going 9-6-2 after a 5-1 victory at the Toronto Marlies on Saturday. The club has points in seven of its last eight games (5-1-2) and sits at third in the North Division. Right Wing Trey Fix-Wolansky, who was recalled on Nov. 20, ranked second in the AHL in goals (tied) and points at the time of his recall with 10-12-22 in 14 games. The forward recorded goals in each of his last four outings and four-plus points in three of them with 7-7-14 and was named the AHL player of the week on Monday, Nov. 21 (5-5-10 in 3 GP). Kirill Marchenko is tied for the lead among AHL rookies in points and ranks second-T in goals with 8-8-16 in 14 contests. The Monsters return to action when they host the Rochester Americans on Thursday, Dec. 1.
