The team’s prior season-high for blocked shots in a game was 21, which was earned twice in 2022-23, last earned: Nov. 15, 2022, at Montreal, 5-1, W. The last time that the Devils logged more than 26 blocked shots in a game was on Jan. 27, 2020, at Ottawa, which resulted in a 4-3 shootout win. As of Nov. 27, the Devils ranked first in the NHL with a 2.18 GAA, while Boston ranked second at 2.24 GAA. Yet, Jersey’s team also ranked third in the NHL for goals, per game, at 3.73 (BOS, 1st, 4.00, DAL, 2nd, 3,82). As of Nov. 27, the Devils ranked first in the NHL in shots against, per game at 25.8, while Carolina ranks second at 25.9. Additionally, as Nov. 27, the Devils are ranked second for shots on goal, per game, at 36.4 behind the Florida Panthers (40.2). Since 1994-95, the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship, the Devils have finished a season averaging under 25 shots against, per game seven times:

23.7 1997-98
24.7 1998-99
24.7 2000-01
23.2 2001-02
23.6 2002-03
24.4 2003-04
23.1 2012-13

The team clinched a playoff berth in six of those seasons, while winning a Stanley Cup championship in 2002-03, plus advancing to the Stanley Cup final in 2000-01. The team didn’t clinch a playoff berth in the shortened (lockout year) in 2012-13. Since 1994-95, the team’s highest shots per game total is 33.1, which was earned in 1999-00. The team then won its second Stanley Cup championship.

Boxing Preview: Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) vs Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs)

0

It’s title time on the Tyne, with the epic North-East battle for the British Super Welterweight Championship confirmed between Darlington’s Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) and Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs) at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle on Friday December 2, live on Channel 5. Click here to buy tickets!

Kelly expressed his desire to compete for Williamson’s Lonsdale belt as the two came face-to-face in July after ‘PBK’ beat Lucas Bastida to claim the WBO International Super Welterweight Title on July 30 at Newcastle’s Vertu Arena.

With the champion equally keen to get the fight on, Williamson since added a win of his own to his undefeated record as he stopped David Benitez in the sixth round on September 17 at the University of Bolton Stadium live on Channel 5.

“We’re two fighters flying the flag for the North East, but only one of us holds that British title,” said Williamson. “Every fight is going to be a tough fight at this level, especially when belts are on the line.

“I’m the champ, I’m undefeated, and I don’t think there’s anything he can throw at me that’ll stop my reign as Super Welterweight king as I move on to bigger and better things. One thing is for sure, and that’s fireworks.”

“This is set to be one of the North-East’s biggest fights in recent memory, and you can see exactly why,” said Kelly.

“Troy is British Champion for a reason and he’s obviously a good fighter. However, he’s just another obstacle in the way of me achieving what I’m destined to achieve, and he’ll be taken care of on December 2.”

After producing a stoppage win over Ted Cheeseman to become the British Champion in October of last year, Williamson has since defended his title against Mason Cartwright to set up this hugely anticipated clash against Kelly.

“The last time we ventured to the North-East, the people clearly showed their passion and love for boxing,” said Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland.

“This time it is on another level as we bring one of the most hotly anticipated domestic dust-ups available. Two of the North-East’s own battling it out to boast the title of Britain’s best. Newcastle is about to host one of its biggest nights in the sport, and I cannot wait to be in the arena for an electric atmosphere come fight night.”

Williamson vs Kelly for the British Super Welterweight Championship tops a huge night of boxing in the North-East on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle with more major fights to be announced soon. Promoted by Wasserman Boxing in association with William Hill and Infinitum Entertainment, all the action will be shown live and free on Channel 5.

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have reassigned forward Alex Barre-Boulet to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League today, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced.

Barre-Boulet, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, has played in one game with the Lightning this season on November 25 against St. Louis, logging 10:01 in ice time. Barre-Boulet was signed by Tampa Bay as a free agent on March 1, 2018. He was claimed off waivers by Seattle on October 11, 2021 and then re-claimed by the Lightning 11 days later on October 22.

Josh Morrissey assisted on three of Winnipeg’s seven goals to match the franchise record for most in a game by a defenseman and continued his strong start to the 2022-23 season.

* While Erik Karlsson accomplished a franchise-first for the Sharks, his opponent Quinn Hughes guided the Canucks to an overtime victory Sunday.

Matty Beniers outdueled Trevor Zegras and recorded his second three-point outing in three games to help the Kraken tie the franchise’s longest winning streak.

JOSH “NORRISSEY” PROPELS JETS TO SEVEN-GOAL OUTING AT UNITED CENTER
Josh Morrissey (0-3—3) assisted on three of Winnipeg’s season-high seven goals, including a primary assist on the game winner as the Jets scored at least five goals in consecutive road games for fifth time in team history. The Jets/Thrashers franchise has never extended their streak to three straight contests as the visitor.

* Josh “Norrissey,” as he is now known among his teammates, has factored on each of Winnipeg’s past three game-winning goals after netting overtime winners on Nov. 21 and Nov. 25 (Nov. 23: 6-1 L at MIN). Only two defensemen in Jets/Thrashers history have factored on a longer stretch of the team’s winners: Dustin Byfuglien (0-5—5 from Dec. 9, 2011 – Feb. 2, 2012) and Alexei Zhitnik (1-3—4 from March 16-31, 2007 w/ ATL).

* Morrissey’s string of success in 2022-23 includes a 4-19—23 stat line through Winnipeg’s first 20 outings – the third-most assists among all defensemen behind Erik Karlsson (21 in 24 GP) and Quinn Hughes (21 in 18 GP). His 19 helpers are also the most by any Jets blueliner through 20 contests of a season.

HUGHES GUIDES CANUCKS PAST KARLSSON, SHARKS IN OVERTIME VICTORY. . .
While Erik Karlsson (0-2—2) played a part in San Jose’s game-tying goal with 5:15 remaining in regulation, Quinn Hughes (0-1—1) collected an assist on Andrei Kuzmenko’stally 1:12 into overtime to guide the Canucks (9-10-3, 21 points) to their fifth win in six contests.

* Hughes (0-21—21 in 18 GP), who found the score sheet for the 15th time in 18 contests this season, has notched 167 assists through his first 223 career outings (19-167—186 in 223 GP). His 0.75 career assists per game since entering the NHL in 2018-19 is tied with Cale Makar (147 in 197 GP) for the highest such total among defensemen through that span (min. 25 GP).

* Meanwhile, Karlsson has two games remaining in November (Nov. 29 at MTL & Nov. 30 at TOR) and has currently registered 5-16—21 since Nov. 1 to become the first defenseman in Sharks history to register a 20-point month.

. . . WHILE BENIERS OUTDUELS ZEGRAS AS KRAKEN WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT
Matty Beniers (1-2—3) and Trevor Zegras (0-3—3) each had three-point nights but it was the Kraken rookie who prevailed, leading Seattle (13-5-3, 29 points) to its fifth straight win in a back-and-forth, nine-goal affair. The Kraken tied the longest win streak in franchise history and improved to 9-1-1 in November while the club’s .864 points percentage through that span trails only the Devils (.923) for the highest among all teams.

* Beniers, who became the first rookie to post a three-point game with the Kraken on Wednesday, recorded his third multi-point outing in four contests and fourth overall in 2022-23 – the most among all rookies. Beniers now has 7-11—18 (22 GP) on the season and has opened a five-point lead over Coyotes forward Matias Maccelli (1-12—13 in 18 GP) in the NHL’s rookie points race.

* On the other side, Zegras recorded his fourth career three-point game, tied with Ryan Getzlaf for the second most by a Ducks player at age 21 or younger and trailing only Paul Kariya (12 GP). It was also Zegras’ third career three-assist outing – the most by any Ducks skater before their 22nd birthday.

KAPRIZOV TIES FRANCHISE RECORD, SETS CAREER HIGH IN WIN

The Sunday edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates watched Kirill Kaprizov (1-2—3) extend his assist streak to eight games to tie a franchise record and establish a career high with a point in his ninth straight contest as Minnesota held off a late rally by Arizona.

NHL LEADERS READY TO TAKE TO THE ICE MONDAY

Several clubs and players having a November to remember will look to add to their totals Monday as each of the top two teams and the top two scorers so far this month take the ice during a six-game slate.

* The Devils (18-4-0, 36 points) can overtake the idle Bruins (18-3-0, 36 points) for first place in the NHL standings when they play their final game of November – a month in which they have posted a League-best 12 wins and 24 points so far. New Jersey can become the first team in NHL history to win at least 13 games in November. They also can equal a club record for wins in any calendar month – the Devils went 13-2-0 in March 2001, one of 14 instances of an NHL team claiming 13 victories in one month.

* The club with the second-most points so far this month will hit the ice for one of its two remaining contests before the calendar turns as Toronto takes its 9-1-3 November record (21 points) into Detroit to face the Red Wings – owners of a four-game winning streak and 4-0-1 record in their past five contests. Mitchell Marner will put his League-best point streak on the line as he aims to become the third Maple Leafs player with a point streak of at least 17 straight games. Marner also can become the first player in franchise history to factor on Toronto’s first goal in seven consecutive contests.

* The top two point-getters to date in November 2022 will hit the ice in St. Louis when Jason Robertson (14-11—25 in 13 GP) and Jamie Benn (10-11—21 in 13 GP) aim to add to their totals in Dallas’ final contest until Dec. 1. They already are the highest-scoring Stars duo in any calendar month, with their 46 combined points sitting behind only three pairs in franchise historyTom McCarthy and Dino Ciccarelli in November 1983 (50 points in 13 GP w/ MNS); Dino Ciccarelli and Neal Broten in January 1984 (48 points in 14 GP w/ MNS); and McCarthy and Broten in November 1983 (47 points in 13 GP w/ MNS).

NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (11-8) at Los Angeles Lakers (7-11)

0

LeBron James is back, and the Los Angeles Lakers’ offense is firing better than it has all season, with another test waiting at home Monday night from the Indiana Pacers.

After missing five games because of a groin injury, James returned for a two-game road set against the San Antonio Spurs beginning Friday. The Lakers won both contests, including a 143-point offensive eruption on Saturday.

After a 2-10 start to the season, the Lakers have won five of six.

That the most recent victory came without Anthony Davis made it even more impressive.

James scored a season-best 39 points on Saturday — making seven 3-pointers — and added 11 rebounds.

There was the matter of the Lakers’ defense allowing 138 points in the second victory over the Spurs. That type of effort could spell doom against the Pacers, who have won eight of their past 11 games, even with a 114-100 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

The Spurs delivered a season-high output in points against the Lakers while plummeting toward an eighth consecutive defeat.

Davis, who had been dealing with back tightness this season, was out because of a bruised left calf, although his absence was characterized as precautionary.

The Lakers received another scare during the game when Russell Westbrook came away with a bloody forehead after receiving an elbow from San Antonio’s Zach Collins. Despite a significant amount of bleeding, Westbrook returned to the game. Collins was ejected.

The Pacers played a Sunday matinee against the Clippers and led by eight points less than nine minutes into the game, were tied just before halftime and watched it slip away from there. Indiana went down by double digits midway through the third quarter and never mustered a late run.

Jalen Smith had 23 points and nine rebounds for Indiana, while Tyrese Haliburton had 15 points and 11 assists. But 12 total third-quarter points were a season low as the team went 0 of 12 from 3-point range in the period. The Pacers entered with an average of 30.2 points in the third quarter this season.

The Pacers shot a season-worst 38.3 percent for the game, 21.4 percent (9 of 42) from 3-point range and never seemed to find Clippers big man Ivica Zubac on the court. Zubac delivered 31 points and a career-high 29 rebounds in 36 minutes.

NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (13-7) at Toronto Raptors (10-9)

0

The Toronto Raptors hope to have some of their injured players in the lineup soon, perhaps as early as Monday night against the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers.

Pascal Siakam (adductor strain) and Scottie Barnes (sprained knee) were among the injured players who participated in Toronto’s practice on Sunday and appear close to a return.

Toronto will catch Cleveland on the second night of back-to-back games. The Cavaliers, also dealing with injuries, had only 10 available players Sunday for their 102-94 road win over the Detroit Pistons.

If Siakam does not play Monday, he could be ready for the road game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.

After defeating the visiting Dallas Mavericks 105-100 on Saturday, the Raptors are 5-5 since Siakam was injured on Nov. 4. Barnes has missed the past two games.

Both players were listed early Monday morning as questionable for the Cavaliers’ game, as were Dalano Banton (sprained ankle) and Justin Champagnie (lower back).

Precious Achiuwa (sprained ankle) and Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe) were listed as out.

Fred VanVleet, who missed the loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday because of illness, returned on Saturday to score 26 points — 18 in the first half. O.G. Anunoby also had 26 points, and reserve Chris Boucher scored a season-best 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Cleveland’s injury list on Sunday included Jarrett Allen (lower-back contusion) and Caris LeVert (sprained left ankle).

They joined Kevin Love (fractured thumb) and Lamar Stevens (illness) on the sidelines in Detroit on Sunday for the middle game of a three-game trip. LeVert has not played since Nov. 20. Allen played 12 minutes in the 117-102 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

Robin Lopez, who made his first start for Cleveland in Allen’s place on Sunday, but played just less than four minutes.

The Cavaliers still had Donovan Mitchell (32 points) and Darius Garland (19 points, 10 assists) on Sunday. Cleveland outscored Detroit 29-16 in the fourth quarter, led by Mitchell’s 14 points.

With Allen unavailable, Evan Mobley had more responsibility at both ends of the court, particularly on defense. He responded with 20 points, 13 rebounds and one blocked shot.

Bickerstaff was disappointed by his team’s shooting — 42.9 percent overall and 28.6 percent from long range.

Toronto defeated the Cavaliers 108-105 at home on Oct. 19 in the opening game of the season for both teams.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (5-15) at Brooklyn Nets (10-11)

0

Nets take on Magic, look to get back to .500

Players returning from injuries or offseason surgery normally sit out a portion of a back-to-back set, but the way Brooklyn’s Seth Curry performed Sunday afternoon against the Portland Trail Blazers might make it a harder-than-usual decision for the Nets.

After Curry’s 29 points and seven 3-pointers helped the Nets successfully start their season-high seven-game homestand, Brooklyn will attempt to reach the .500 mark for the second time this season when it hosts the Orlando Magic on the back end of a back-to-back on Monday night.

Brooklyn is attempting to reach .500 for the first time since it beat Toronto in the second game of the season after getting blown out by New Orleans in the season opener. The Nets were one game under .500 twice last week but followed both instances with losses (in Philadelphia and Indiana).

After collapsing in the fourth quarter Friday, Curry helped the Nets pull away in the final 12 minutes of Sunday’s 111-97 victory over the Blazers. He scored 13 points in the quarter, including 11 in the time Kevin Durant spent getting a rest.

The 29 points was Curry’s highest total in 30 regular-season games since becoming a Net along with Ben Simmons in the trade for James Harden. Following offseason ankle surgery, Curry is averaging 11.4 points a game and shooting 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from 3-point range.

Curry played 18 minutes in his season debut Oct. 29, he and scored 22 points on the front end of a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 12 before sitting the next night against the Lakers.

Whether Curry plays or not, the Nets hope to follow one of their better defensive efforts of the season. Brooklyn allowed 40 points after halftime and allowed 36.8 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.

Orlando will try to avoid matching a season high with its fifth straight loss and is 1-6 over its past seven games. Since allowing 87 and 97 points in consecutive wins over Dallas and Phoenix Nov. 9-11, Orlando is allowing an average of 117.4 points on 50.3 percent shooting from the field.

Orlando’s latest loss also was its most lopsided, as the Magic allowed 72 points in the paint and tied a team record by allowing 64.9 percent shooting in a 133-103 home setback to Philadelphia on Sunday night.

While rookie Paolo Banchero scored 18 points in his second game following a seven-game absence due to a sprained left ankle, Orlando had little else to help the top overall pick of the 2022 draft.

Jalen Suggs sat out with an ankle injury, Wendell Carter Jr. missed a fourth straight game with a foot injury, and Markelle Fultz had his season debut pushed back to at least Wednesday due to a fractured toe. The Magic also lost Mo Bamba to back spasms and Terrence Ross to an illness, though both could play Monday.
