NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (5-15) at Brooklyn Nets (10-11)

0

Nets take on Magic, look to get back to .500

Players returning from injuries or offseason surgery normally sit out a portion of a back-to-back set, but the way Brooklyn’s Seth Curry performed Sunday afternoon against the Portland Trail Blazers might make it a harder-than-usual decision for the Nets.

After Curry’s 29 points and seven 3-pointers helped the Nets successfully start their season-high seven-game homestand, Brooklyn will attempt to reach the .500 mark for the second time this season when it hosts the Orlando Magic on the back end of a back-to-back on Monday night.

Brooklyn is attempting to reach .500 for the first time since it beat Toronto in the second game of the season after getting blown out by New Orleans in the season opener. The Nets were one game under .500 twice last week but followed both instances with losses (in Philadelphia and Indiana).

After collapsing in the fourth quarter Friday, Curry helped the Nets pull away in the final 12 minutes of Sunday’s 111-97 victory over the Blazers. He scored 13 points in the quarter, including 11 in the time Kevin Durant spent getting a rest.

The 29 points was Curry’s highest total in 30 regular-season games since becoming a Net along with Ben Simmons in the trade for James Harden. Following offseason ankle surgery, Curry is averaging 11.4 points a game and shooting 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from 3-point range.

Curry played 18 minutes in his season debut Oct. 29, he and scored 22 points on the front end of a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 12 before sitting the next night against the Lakers.

Whether Curry plays or not, the Nets hope to follow one of their better defensive efforts of the season. Brooklyn allowed 40 points after halftime and allowed 36.8 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.

Orlando will try to avoid matching a season high with its fifth straight loss and is 1-6 over its past seven games. Since allowing 87 and 97 points in consecutive wins over Dallas and Phoenix Nov. 9-11, Orlando is allowing an average of 117.4 points on 50.3 percent shooting from the field.

Orlando’s latest loss also was its most lopsided, as the Magic allowed 72 points in the paint and tied a team record by allowing 64.9 percent shooting in a 133-103 home setback to Philadelphia on Sunday night.

While rookie Paolo Banchero scored 18 points in his second game following a seven-game absence due to a sprained left ankle, Orlando had little else to help the top overall pick of the 2022 draft.

Jalen Suggs sat out with an ankle injury, Wendell Carter Jr. missed a fourth straight game with a foot injury, and Markelle Fultz had his season debut pushed back to at least Wednesday due to a fractured toe. The Magic also lost Mo Bamba to back spasms and Terrence Ross to an illness, though both could play Monday.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (6-14) at Boston Celtics 16-4)

Without Gordon Hayward, Hornets try to alter Celtics’ home success

The Charlotte Hornets will be without guard Gordon Hayward when they visit the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

According to multiple reports, Hayward has a fractured left shoulder and is expected to be out for an extended period of time.

Hayward, 32, missed eight consecutive games earlier this month with what was originally termed a shoulder contusion. He played in three consecutive games before sitting out Friday night’s 110-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves due to the shoulder injury.

Hayward has appeared in 11 games this season. He’s averaging 16.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point range. He spent three seasons with the Celtics, who sent him to the Hornets in a sign-and-trade agreement in 2020.

Boston was without star forward Jason Tatum (ankle) for Sunday night’s 130-121 victory over the Washington Wizards. It was the third game of a six-game homestand for the Celtics, who have won three in a row. It was also the first game Tatum has missed this season.

Tatum injured his ankle against the Chicago Bulls last Monday, but he played in Wednesday’s 125-112 victory over the Dallas Mavericks and in Friday’s 122-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings. He was Boston’s leading scorer and rebounder in each game.

Tatum is averaging 36.9 minutes, 30.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this season. He is listed as day to day.

Jaylen Brown poured in a game-high 36 points in Sunday’s win and was one of seven Boston players who scored in double figures. Malcolm Brogdon (17 points), Derrick White (15), Al Horford (14), Marcus Smart (14), Sam Hauser (14) and Luke Kornet (12) were the others.

The Celtics had a 26-6 edge in points off turnovers and led by as many as 26.

Charlotte’s Kelly Oubre scored 28 points in Friday’s victory over Minnesota. Terry Rozier added 22 points and eight assists in the win, which gave Charlotte back-to-back victories for the first time this season. The Hornets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 107-101 on Wednesday.

Charlotte also received career highs in points (nine) and rebounds (12) from second-year pro Kai Jones, a 6-foot-11 forward who is averaging 7.2 minutes per game this season.

NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves (10-10) at Washington Wizards (10-10)

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been among the NBA’s most inconsistent teams, which could be expected considering all of their offseason changes.

The Wolves’ search for an identity will continue on the road Monday night against the Washington Wizards, who are battling their own consistency issues.

Minnesota has lost two straight following a five-game winning streak. The Wolves were outrebounded 47-31 and allowed their highest point total this season in a 137-114 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

The Wolves shook up their roster in July by acquiring center Rudy Gobert from the Utah Jazz for Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt and four first-round draft picks.

The early results have been mixed for Minnesota, which has made the playoffs only twice in the past 18 seasons. Some nights, Gobert looks like a perfect fit and the Wolves are nearly unstoppable. Other times, the team’s offense appears stagnant.

Gobert is averaging 12.7 rebounds a game and remains a force on the defensive end. He also is averaging 13.5 points and figures to contribute more offensively as the season progresses.

Point guard D’Angelo Russell, who is averaging 16.7 points over the last three games, said the Wolves need to be patient.

Minnesota has lost its last five meetings against Washington, which has dropped three straight. The Wizards trailed by as many as 26 in a 130-121 loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday.

Bradley Beal scored 30 points to lead Washington, while Kristaps Porzingis had 21. The Wizards were without injured players Johnny Davis (groin soreness), Rui Hachimura (right-ankle soreness) and Kyle Kuzma (lower-back pain).

Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. is optimistic that Kuzma could return as soon as Monday.

Beal has at least 20 points in eight consecutive games to lead the Wizards, who are 7-4 at home this season compared with 3-6 on the road.

Washington’s defense has clearly struggled without Hachimura and Kuzma. The team trailed 72-55 at the half against Boston and has allowed an average of 117.7 points during its three-game losing streak.

Point guard Monte Morris returned on Sunday after missing three games due to right-ankle soreness and had 16 points and eight assists in 24 minutes.

The Wizards have received a spark from rookie guard Jordan Goodwin, who was signed to a two-way contract before the season.

The 24-year-old Goodwin is averaging 6.8 points in 13 games while becoming a key part of the team’s rotation.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (11-9) at Philadelphia Sixers (11-9)

0

The Philadelphia 76ers will try to extend their winning streak to three games when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.

The Sixers won two games in Orlando, including 133-103 on Sunday, and will play the 76ers in Philadelphia before beginning a three-game trip. The Hawks have dropped two in a row after Sunday’s 106-98 home loss to the Miami Heat.

Philadelphia and Atlanta have split two games this season.

Each team hopes to get a key piece back in the lineup. Philadelphia star Joel Embiid has missed four games with a mid-foot strain but could play on Monday. Atlanta center Clint Capela, who averages a double-double of 11.1 points and 11.9 rebounds a game, has missed two games with dental pain.

Philadelphia’s Tobias Harris has picked up some of the slack in Embiid’s absence. He scored a season-high 25 points on Sunday after posting 23 points and 10 rebounds on Friday. He is averaging 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds this season.

Shake Milton, who had his first career double-double on Friday, returned on Sunday to score 29 points. Milton has 20-plus points in three straight games and in four of his last five.

Atlanta has struggled from the perimeter this year against the zone defenses used by the opposition. On Sunday, the Hawks made only 39.8 percent of their field-goal tries and rank 22nd in the league at 46 percent. Trae Young, the team’s leading scorer at 28.2 points, scored 22 but was 4-for-16 from the floor, and Dejounte Murray was 5-for-16.

Young and Murray combined for 83 points in Friday’s 128-122 loss to Houston. But the shots weren’t falling on Sunday.

McMillan shook up the rotation and gave playing time to Trent Forrest, who scored his first basket of the season, and Frank Kaminsky. McMillan did not use Aaron Holiday or his brother, Justin Holiday.

NDSU holds off Nevada in Nugget Classic finale

RENO, Nev. – Nevada women’s basketball was defeated by North Dakota State 73-68 on Sunday in the Nugget Classic finale at the Lawlor Events Center.

Junior forward Lexie Givens came up with her second consecutive double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, receiving All-Nugget Classic Tournament team honors in the process. Givens is the first Nevada player since Terae Briggs in 2018 to record a double-double in back-to-back games.

North Dakota State’s Heaven Hamling recorded a game-high 39 points en route to All-Nugget Classic Tournament team honors. NDSU’s Elle Evans added 10 points and also clinched a spot on the All-Tournament team.

After North Dakota State jumped out to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, sophomore Kaylee Borden knocked down a 3-pointer that cut the deficit to single digits with just over three minutes to play in the first half. A pair of layups allowed Nevada to go into the locker room only down by three.

The Pack cut the North Dakota State lead down to two points, but the Bison knocked down a basket from beyond the arc and sinked a pair of free throws to push the lead out in front by five. A layup from Givens tied the game with just over two minutes left in the period, but Hamling sank a three that allowed the Bison to retake the lead that carried through the end of the third quarter.

Nevada cut the lead to as little as one point in the fourth quarter, but North Dakota State never relinquished the advantage and remained undefeated on the season.

Nevada goes on the road for the San Diego Winter Classic, taking on Idaho on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team
Heaven Hamling – North Dakota State
Elle Evans – North Dakota State
Lexie Givens – Nevada
Megan Walstead – Milwaukee
Abby Muse – Boise State

NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns (13-6) at Sacramento Kings (10-8)

0

The team with the biggest discrepancy in the NBA between home and road wins will attempt to shrink that gap when the Phoenix Suns visit the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

The Suns have won four in a row, all at home, to improve their record at Phoenix to 11-1. They are the winningest home team in the NBA.

But Phoenix also has one of the worst road records in the NBA at 2-5, having lost their last three away from home. Their only road wins have come against the Los Angeles Clippers in October and the Minnesota Timberwolves almost three weeks ago.

Trips to Sacramento were generally enjoyable for the Suns last season, although their 2-0 road sweep didn’t come easily, with the wins coming by a total of eight points, including one in overtime.

But that was when the Kings were en route to their 16th straight season without a playoff appearance. They could be on a different path this year, having opened 10-8 and just 2 1/2 games behind Phoenix’s best-in-the-West pace.

The Kings have lost two straight, which came at the end of a tough three-game trip to Memphis, Atlanta and Boston that began with a win over the Grizzlies. Sacramento has won its last six home games after an 0-3 start.

The hot home start has brought Sacramento attention far and wide. Team owner Vivek Ranadive has overseen what he hopes to be a longtime Sacramento tradition: Purple laser beams shot into the sky from atop the arena following every home win.

The Kings already have lit up the Sacramento sky after impressive wins over the likes of the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets, the latter when Sacramento put up an efficient 153 points.

The Suns continue to be without Cam Johnson, out with torn meniscus in his right knee, but they were happy to welcome back key reserve Landry Shamet in their 113-112 home win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

Shamet had missed seven straight games with a concussion.

Shamet played 15 minutes off the bench in his return, hitting one of his two shots. He feasted on the Kings last season, putting up 21 points in a win at Sacramento in March before bettering that with a season-high 27 in a home loss in April.

After ugly road losses, Jazz, Bulls seek better results

Injuries and illness created an opportunity for Vlatko Cancar to show he can make a valuable contribution to the Denver Nuggets. After three years of mop-up minutes, he is showing he belongs in the rotation.

Cancar played a total of 25 minutes through the first month of the season, but with several players missing he has been pushed into service. He is averaging 23.4 minutes over the last four games and has made key contributions on both offense and defense.

He’ll get more quality time when Denver hosts Houston on Monday night in the first of two home games against the Rockets.

Michael Porter Jr. (heel) and Jeff Green (knee) are not expected to play.

Cancar’s expanded role started at Dallas on Nov. 18 when the Nuggets were without Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Denver lost that game by 28 points but beat the Mavericks two nights later, and a big reason was Cancar’s halfcourt heave that ended the second quarter.

In the last two games he has played 60 minutes, averaging 16 points while playing strong defense. He had three blocks in an overtime win at Oklahoma City on Wednesday and was disruptive in a win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

Houston brings a two-game winning streak to Denver and has won three of its last five after starting the season 2-12. The Rockets beat Oklahoma City and rallied to beat Atlanta for their first winning streak.

Houston’s wins have come against good teams, including a win at Dallas on Nov. 16.

The Rockets made key plays down the stretch in the win over the Hawks. Garrison Mathews stole the ball with Houston up one in the final two minutes and drew a foul to give the Rockets more of a cushion.

Green has taken on challenges against some of the best guards in the NBA — including Trae Young and Steph Curry — and has held his own.

Vlatko Cancar eager to keep making impact as Nuggets host Rockets

NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (8-12) at New Orleans Pelicans (11-8)

Pelicans in need of bounce-back game vs. Thunder

The New Orleans Pelicans are coming off their worst performance of the season.

And they might not have star forward Brandon Ingram available when they try to bounce back in a game against the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

Ingram suffered a sprained left big toe in a 132-111 loss at Memphis on Friday night. Coach Willie Green said Sunday that Ingram is day to day.

The Pelicans had won five of six games, but the Grizzlies raced to a 27-9 lead and remained in command throughout.

Green gave credit to Memphis for the way it played from beginning to end.

The 44 points that the Grizzlies scored in the first quarter were the most allowed by the Pelicans in any quarter this season.

Ingram is averaging 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He is shooting 46.7 percent on 3-pointers. The Pelicans also are missing CJ McCollum, who was placed in the NBA health and safety protocols before Friday’s game.

The Thunder’s last game didn’t go much better than the Pelicans’.

Their 118-105 loss at Houston on Saturday night wasn’t as close as the final score might suggest.

The Rockets seized command in the second quarter in similar fashion to how Memphis seized command against the Pelicans in the first.

Houston made 7 of 11 3-pointers while outscoring Oklahoma City 42-22 in the second quarter on its way to a 65-44 halftime lead.

Houston shot 52.3 percent from the floor for the game, hitting 18 of 36 3-pointers, and led by as many as 27 points.

Oklahoma City wasn’t much better on the offensive end, as it lost for the fourth time in five games. It made 10 of 44 (22.7 percent) 3-pointers.

Much of the Thunder’s offensive rhythm came from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as is often the case. Gilgeous-Alexander, who entered Sunday third in the NBA with an average of 31.1 points, had 32, while shooting 12 of 21 from the floor and 7 of 7 from the foul line.
