Two upper-echelon Eastern Conference teams will square off when the Cleveland Cavaliers return home to close November against Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
The Sixers have won three straight and four of their past five while the Cavaliers are back home after losing two of three on their three-game trip following a four-game winning streak.
Embiid scored a team-high 30 points in Monday’s 104-101 win over the Atlanta Hawks. He returned to action after a four-game absence due to a sprain in his left foot. Embiid took just seven shots in his first 15 minutes on Monday.
The Sixers, who also were without James Harden (foot tendon strain) and Tyrese Maxey (foot fracture), went 3-1 in Embiid’s absence, something the star says reflects the team’s resilience.
Wednesday will mark the beginning of a stretch where Cleveland plays 11 of its next 14 games at home.
Without injured Jarrett Allen (hip) and Kevin Love (thumb), the Cavaliers lost the finale of their three-game trip, 100-88, to the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.
Donovan Mitchell had his first subpar night with the Cavaliers, scoring just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Cavaliers couldn’t find their rhythm in the first half, falling behind 52-43 at halftime. That deficit grew quickly in the third as Cleveland made just 1 of 17 from 3-point range in the second half.
Two Cavaliers notched double-doubles, the only two Cleveland players in double figures in scoring. Darius Garland finished with 18 points and 10 assists while Evan Mobley had his fifth double-double in his past seven games — 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Mobley has matched his rookie season average of 15 points per game and is grabbing an average of nine rebounds, nearly a rebound higher than in his 2021-22 rookie season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed first baseman Carlos Santana to a one-year contract for the 2023 season. Santana has recorded a career .242 average (1533-for-6329) with 334 doubles, 16 triples, 278 home runs, 925 RBI, .359 on-base percentage, .432 slugging percentage and .791 OPS in 1784 games with Cleveland (2010-17 & 2019-20), Philadelphia (2018), Kansas City (2021-22) and Seattle (2022).
“Carlos is a pro who is always ready to play and will add consistent at-bats from both sides of the plate and quality defense,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “We look forward to welcoming Carlos to our team and clubhouse.”
The 36-year-old native of the Dominican Republic played in a total of 131 games in 2022 between Kansas City and Seattle, where he hit 19 home runs while also recording 60 RBI. He ranked eighth among all American League hitters with 71 walks, finished in the 97th percentile of walk rate and 87th percentile in chase rate according to Baseball Savant. Santana recorded a combined .997 fielding percentage in 76 games between Kansas City and Seattle after making just two errors in 625 total chances in 655.1 innings at first base.
He has posted a .994 fielding percentage (58 errors in 9240 total chances) in 1102 games at first base in his career. Santana has connected for at least 18 home runs in each season since 2011 with the exception of the shortened 60-game 2020 campaign. He ranks first among all active switch hitters in home runs (278), RBI (925) and on-base percentage (.359). Santana’s 278 home runs are also the 12th-most all-time among switch hitters in MLB history (Bobby Bonilla and Bernie Williams are tied for the 10th-most with 287).
The Pirates will announce a corresponding 40-man roster move later today.
BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today named Ramón Vázquez as the Major League club’s bench coach.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom and Manager Alex Cora made the announcement.
Vázquez, 46, is entering his sixth season on the Red Sox’ Major League coaching staff. In 2022, he served as first base coach while also coordinating the club’s base running instruction. Previously, he held the positions of coach/interpreter (2018-20) and quality control coach/interpreter (2021). From 2018-21, Vázquez worked as a liaison between the club’s advance scouting and statistical analysis efforts for the purpose of presenting information to players and coaches. During his time in Boston, he has also worked extensively with the club’s infielders.
Vázquez has won four league titles as a manager in Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente, including two with Santurce (2015-16 and 2018-19) and two with Caguas (2020-21 and 2021-22). He also worked with Santurce as a first base coach during the team’s title-winning 2014-15 season. Vázquez and Cora were teammates with Caguas in 2004 and 2010, as well as for Puerto Rico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Vázquez played in 696 Major League games with the Seattle Mariners (2001), San Diego Padres (2002-04), Red Sox (2005), Cleveland (2005-06), Texas Rangers (2007-08), and Pittsburgh Pirates (2009). He was acquired by the Red Sox on December 20, 2004 as part of a four-player deal in exchange for Dave Roberts. He would appear in 27 games with Boston in 2005 before being traded to Cleveland on July 7, 2005 in exchange for Cora.
The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Jeimer (JAY-mer) Candelario(can-duh-LAR-ee-oh) and a Major League contract with outfielder Stone Garrett on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Candelario, 29, has hit .240 with 126 doubles, 13 triples, 66 home runs, 248 RBI, 237 walks, seven stolen bases and 283 runs scored in parts of seven Major League seasons with the Chicago Cubs (2016-17) and Detroit Tigers (2017-22). In 2021, he tied for the Major League lead with 42 doubles while setting career marks in games played (149), hits (151), doubles (42), extra-base hits (61) and RBI (67).
A switch-hitter, Candelario combined to hit .278/.356/.458 with 53 doubles, six triples, 23 home runs, 96 RBI, 85 walks and 105 runs scored in 201 games between the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In his final season with Detroit in 2022, Candelario hit .217 with 19 doubles, two triples, 13 homers, 50 RBI, 28 walks and 49 runs scored in 124 games.
Defensively, Candelario has played 517 games at third base and 64 games at first base during his career. He played 117 games at third base and eight games as the designated hitter during the 2022 season.
Candelario signed with the Chicago Cubs as an international free agent on October 2, 2010 and made his Major League debut on July 3, 2016 against the New York Mets. He was traded to Detroit in 2017 with Isaac Paredes in exchange for Alex Avila and Justin Wilson.
Garrett, 27, will be under team control for six seasons. He hit .276 with eight doubles, four homers, 10 RBI, three walks, three stolen bases and 13 runs scored in 27 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 after making his Major League debut on August 17 against San Francisco. He hit safely in 10 of his first 12 games, logging six multi-hit games, four doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and three stolen bases. Defensively, Garrett played 13 games in left field and nine as a designated hitter.
At the time of his promotion, Garrett ranked among all Minor Leaguers in RBI (T2nd, 96), home runs (T4th, 28), extra-base hits (T6th, 54) and total bases (10th, 221).
Garrett was selected by the Miami Marlins in the eighth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of George Ranch High School in Richmond, Texas. In eight Minor League seasons, he hit .251 with 125 doubles, 25 triples, 94 home runs, 376 RBI, 142 walks, 83 stolen bases and 337 runs scored in 642 games. He has played 140 Minor League games in left field, 87 in center field and 124 in right field. Garrett was named an MiLB.com Organization All-Star with Arizona in 2021 and 2022 and with Miami in 2015.
The Nationals now have 40 players on their 40-man roster. Please see attached document for the updated 40-man roster.
* There’s a new benchmark for highest-scoring game of the 2022-23 season thanks to a 17-goal thriller between the Kraken and Kings that shifted back and forth with six tying goals (equaling a League record) before Seattle pushed its winning streak to six games.
* Alex Ovechkin scored twice in Vancouver to overtake Wayne Gretzky on the all-time road goals list and move within seven of joining him and Gordie Howe in the 800-goal club.
* A nine-game Tuesday saw a 3-1—4 performance by Blake Wheeler, the Bruins remain perfect at home since mid-April and Roman Josi climb the Predators’ all-time list with an overtime winner.
KRAKEN, KINGS SCORE GOALS GALORE
With six goals in the first period, 12 in the first 30 minutes and 17 overall, the Kraken and Kings produced the highest-scoring game so far this season as Seattle won a thriller in L.A. The back-and-forth Pacific Division showdown featured the most goals in the first half of a game in over 12 years. It ended as the second 17-goal game in as many seasons and just the 12th regular-season contest over the past 35 years to feature as many tallies.
* The Kings (5) and Kraken (1) matched the NHL record for the most tying goals in a game. Los Angeles’ five tying tallies were the most by one team in a game in nearly 27 years (BUF: 5x on Jan. 6, 1996 at MTL) and marked just the 15th regular-season contest in history in which a team accomplished the feat. The NHL record for tying goals in a game by one team is six, a mark last achieved by the Kings on Jan. 13, 1984 (6 GTG in 7-7T at WIN).
* Tuesday marked the fifth 9-8 game in NHL history – the other instances came on Oct. 27, 2011 (WPG 9, PHI 8), Feb. 27, 1982 (PHI 9, CGY 8), Dec. 2, 1981 (QUE 9, EDM 8) and Oct. 10, 1981 (TOR 9, CHI 8).
* Seattle, which won 8-5 on Nov. 23, became the fifth team in the last 25 years – and fourth since the start of last season – to score eight or more goals in a game twice within a span of seven days. The others: Ottawa (2005-06), Arizona (2021-22), Washington (2021-22) and Tampa Bay (2021-22).
OVECHKIN CLIMBS A LIST WITH EVERY GOAL AS PURSUIT OF 800 CONTINUES While he continued his “Road to 800 Goals” and moved within seven of joining the elite club, Alex Ovechkin scored his 402nd and 403rd career road goals and surpassed Wayne Gretzky (402) for the most in NHL history as Washington earned a win at Rogers Arena.
* Ovechkin opened the scoring with his first-ever goal against Spencer Martin for the 135th game-opening goal of his career, tying Jaromir Jagr for the most in NHL history and Brett Hull (65) for the most such tallies on the road. Martin is the 165th different goaltender Ovechkin has tallied against in his career, surpassing Mark Messier (164) for the third most in NHL history behind onlyJagr (178) and Patrick Marleau (177).
* The Capitals captain also notched his 217th and 218th career first-period goals, moving him ahead of Jagr (216) for the eighth most in NHL history. He trails only Gretzky (241), Phil Esposito (240), Hull (237), Gordie Howe (229), Steve Yzerman (223), Messier (220) and Teemu Selanne (220).
WHEELER NETS HAT TRICK IN JETS VICTORY Blake Wheeler (3-1—4)factored on four of his team’s five goals, including netting a hat trick, while Connor Hellebuyck turned aside all 40 shots he faced to shut out the defending Stanley Cup-champion Avalanche at Canada Life Centre during Hockey Fights Cancer Night in Winnipeg.
* After missing the playoffs last season, the Jets (14-6-1, 29 points) now sit one point back of the Stars (13-6-4, 30 points) for first place in the Central Division.
* Wheeler (36 years, 90 days) became the second-oldest player in Jets/Thrashers franchise history to score a hat trick, behind only Ray Ferraro (36 years, 174 days on Feb. 13, 2001 & 36 years, 103 days on Dec. 14, 2000).
* Wheeler also recorded his 13th four-point game with the Jets/Thrashers franchise. The only player in franchise history with more is Ilya Kovalchuk (20 GP).
A NUMBER OF NOTES FROM AROUND THE RINKS FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES The latest edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured a number of highlights from an eventful nine-game Tuesday in the NHL, including Boston extending its home winning streak, a pair of defensemen scoring overtime winners and another opening-minute tally.
* The Bruins became the fifth team in NHL history to post 20 consecutive home wins (regular season & playoffs), joining the 1975-76 Flyers (24 GP), 2011-12 Red Wings (23 GP), 1984-85 Flyers (20 GP) and 1929-30 Bruins (20 GP).
* Carolina’s Brett Pesce and Nashville’s Roman Josi both scored in overtime to lift their respective teams to wins Tuesday. Pesce became the fourth defenseman in Hurricanes/Whalers history to record consecutive game-winning goals, while Josi moved into a tie with Shea Weber (7) for the third-most overtime winners in Predators history.
* Goals came early – like 16 seconds into the contest for the Kings – and late on Tuesday, with the Penguins scoring a tying goal in the final minute of regulation. Pittsburgh became the fourth team in five days to net a tying goal within the last 60 seconds of the third period.
GERRY McNEIL REMEMBERED IN LATEST HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER FEATURE Throughout Hockey Fights Cancer Month, NHL.com has been sharing stories of those in and around the League who have been impacted by cancer. The latest contribution from Dave Stubbs is in appreciation of late Canadiens goaltender Gerry McNeil, who played a part in preventing Gordie Howe’s 50th goal of the 1952-53 campaign – a mark that would have tied Maurice Richard’s single-season record.
A four-game Wednesday will close out November, including a doubleheader on TNT that will feature the Sabres (9-12-1, 19 points) visiting the Red Wings (11-6-4, 26 points) before the Blackhawks (6-11-4, 16 points) host the Oilers (12-10-0, 24 points). Also on Wednesday is the induction for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2022 in Saint Paul, Minn., which will feature former Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller.
2022 U.S. HOCKEY HALL OF FAME INDUCTION Ryan Miller, Jim Johannson, Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson, Monique Lamoureux-Morando and Steve Cash will become the five newest members of the 2022 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame during their induction ceremony Wednesday.
* Miller will enter the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame with the NHL record for most wins by a U.S.-born goaltender with 391, 25 more than the next-closest active netminder: Jonathan Quick (366). His career spanned 18 NHL seasons and included a Vezina Trophy in 2009-10, along with an Olympic silver medal in 2010 with Team USA. Miller, whose jersey will be retired in Buffalo on Jan. 19, 2023, wants to be remembered for how he approached the game, his effort each night and as a good teammate.
* Johannson will be recognized for his lifetime spent growing the game across the country. He is a two-time Olympian who represented USA Hockey both as an executive and as a player, competing for his country in both the 1983 and 1984 IIHF World Junior Championship. Johannson passed away unexpectedly weeks before the 2018 Olympic Winter Games where he was set to be the general manager of the men’s ice hockey team.
* The Lamoureux twins, Jocelyne and Monique, were inseparable in their careers and will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame together Wednesday. Their decorated careers are highlighted by three Olympic medals, including gold in 2018, and seven World Championship medals – six of which are gold. The twins played for the national team for a decade and will continue to be known as two of the best women’s hockey players the country has seen.
* Cash, a goaltender who has represented his country on the world stage as a three-time Paralympic gold medalist and five-time world champion, will become the first sled player in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Cash had his leg amputated at age three after an osteosarcoma diagnosis, a form of bone cancer – he was fitted with a prosthetic and learned to walk, then in-line skate, before learning about sled hockey. Read more about his story.
With little or no time left on the fourth-quarter clock, after a touchdown cuts your deficit to one point, do you kick a game-tying point-after and play for the win in overtime? Or, do you go for two?
After JUSTIN HERBERT threw a touchdown pass to AUSTIN EKELER with 15 seconds left, pulling the Chargers to within 24-23 last week at Arizona, head coach BRANDON STALEY made the call.
And the byproduct of Staley’s faith and trust in his players was their faith and trust in him.
“It just goes to show how much he really believes in us, the courage he has,” said tight end GERALD EVERETT, who caught Herbert’s pass to convert a two-point play and give the Chargers a 25-24 victory. “We’ve been waiting so long to just have that moment, to just be aggressive. Tight games like this against good teams. What better way to finish in a tight game but to go for two and have that be the deciding factor?”
It was also the deciding factor in Jacksonville. After TREVOR LAWRENCE orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to cut Baltimore’s lead to 27-26 with 14 seconds left, head coach DOUG PEDERSON made the same decision, and ZAY JONES caught Lawrence’s game-winning pass to edge the Ravens, 28-27.
On three occasions this year, more than any season since the NFL introduced the two-point conversion in 1994, a head coach has “gone for two” to win a game and won. Last week it happened twice on Sunday, more than any day in league annals. In Week 1, head coach BRIAN DABOLL and the Giants called a play to score the game-winning two points with just over a minute remaining in a win at Tennessee, 21-20.
Don’t call it a coincidence, either. The catalyst for those three wins is the NFL’s abundance of comebacks and close games in 2022. This season, 57 games have been won or tied by teams that trailed in the fourth quarter, and 79 have been decided by six points or less – both the most respective games through 12 weeks in any NFL season.
This week, the NEW YORK GIANTS (7-4) host the WASHINGTON COMMANDERS (7-5) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). In games decided by six points or fewer, the Giants are 5-0 and the Commanders are 5-2. Another pair of teams who’ve excelled in those games – the NEW YORK JETS (7-4) and MINNESOTA VIKINGS (9-2) – meet at U.S. Bank Stadium Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). The Vikings are 4-0 in games decided by six points or less while the Jets are 3-1.
So don’t leave your seat, no matter the score. In the NFL, late-game drama isn’t a matter of if; it’s a matter of when.
The Starting 11 entering Week 13…
1. CLASS OF 2020 HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING AFTER DEC. 1: Quarterbacks JUSTIN HERBERT and TUA TAGOVAILOA, products of the quarterback draft class of 2020, each have seven career wins in regular-season starts Dec. 1 and later. The No. 1 overall selection in that class, JOE BURROW, has won three straight late-season starts, while the No. 53 overall selection in 2020, JALEN HURTS, has also led his team to three consecutive wins after the change of calendar to December.
The last time four quarterbacks from the same draft class started in the playoffs was 2005, when REX GROSSMAN, BYRON LEFTWICH, CARSON PALMER and CHRIS SIMMS – all drafted in 2003 – led their teams to the postseason.
2. NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 3: The number of games on the Week 13 docket that pair first-place teams. Two of those three – TENNESSEE (7-4) at PHILADELPHIA (10-1) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX) and MIAMI (8-3) at SAN FRANCISCO (7-4) on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, FOX) – are potential Super Bowl LVII pairings. The other – KANSAS CITY (9-2) at CINCINNATI (7-4) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS) – involves teams that engaged in two of the most exciting games of the 2021 season, a Week 17 thriller and the AFC Championship Game, both captured by the Bengals. Cincinnati enters Week 13 tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North.
3. BOLTS, RAIDERS REKINDLE MEMORIES OF 2021 FINALE: The LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (6-5) and LAS VEGAS RAIDERS (4-7) meet on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS) at Allegiant Stadium, site of the NFL’s 2021 regular-season finale. In that classic, the Raiders earned the league’s final playoff berth with a 35-32 win, when DANIEL CARLSON hit a 47-yard field goal as time expired on the overtime clock.
Chargers quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT has 88 career touchdown passes and 12,354 career passing yards. In NFL history over a player’s first three seasons, only Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (98) had more touchdown passes and only ANDREW LUCK (12,957) had more passing yards.
Raiders running back JOSH JACOBS, who leads the NFL this season with 1,159 rushing yards, is bidding to become the first Raiders player to lead the league in rushing since Pro Football Hall of Famer MARCUS ALLEN in 1985. Last week, Jacobs recorded a single-game franchise record 303 scrimmage yards (229 rushing, 74 receiving) along with two rushing touchdowns, including the game-winning 86-yard touchdown run in overtime.
4. SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP: MINNESOTA (9-2) can clinch its first division crown since 2017 with a win and a Detroit loss this week. That’s not all that will enter the conversation on Sunday, when the Vikings host the NEW YORK JETS (7-4) at U.S. Bank Stadium (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Jets rookie cornerback SAUCEGARDNER leads the NFL with 14 passes defensed. Expect Gardner to line up for several snaps across from wide receiver JUSTIN JEFFERSON, who last week reached 4,248 career receiving yards, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer RANDY MOSS (4,163) and ODELL BECKHAM JR. (4,122) for the most in a player’s first three seasons in NFL history.
5. SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUP: Former San Francisco offensive coordinator and Miami head coach MIKE MCDANIEL brings his Dolphins across the country to meet the 49ers on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, FOX). McDaniel’s Miami offense features the league’s leading passer, TUA TAGOVAILOA (115.7 rating), and TYREEK HILL, who leads the NFL in both receptions (87) and receiving yards (1,233). When the Dolphins have the ball, they’ll face perhaps their stiffest test of the season. Led by coordinator DEMECO RYANS, San Francisco leads the NFL in both scoring defense (15.7 points allowed per game) and total defense (281.7 yards allowed per game). The 49ers have shut out opponents over their last six quarters of play.
6. STREAK SPEAK: The NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (4-8) face off with the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-6) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). New Orleans has won four straight games at Raymond James Stadium. Over the team’s last nine quarters in the stadium, the Saints have outscored the Buccaneers 54-3.
7. DID YOU KNOW?: If the season ended today, all four NFC East teams would be in the playoffs. In NFL history, an individual division has never qualified all of its teams for the postseason.
8. UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: This week, the NFL kicks off “Unboxing Week,” when players from across the league showcase the customized #MyCauseMyCleats they’ll wear to recognize the various causes they support. One of those causes will be featured on the footwear of three players at Lincoln Financial Field when TENNESSEE (7-4) visits PHILADELPHIA (10-1) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX).
Titans defensive lineman LARRELL MURCHISON as well as two Eagles, linebacker SHAUN BRADLEY and kicker JAKE ELLIOTT, are three of 10 players across the league wearing cleats to support Everytown, an organization that works to reduce gun violence (www.everytown.org).
Philadelphia quarterback JALEN HURTS, who is wearing cleats to support both the OneMindSet Foundation and the Eagles Autism Foundation, played one of the most complete offensive games ever in last week’s win. Hurts became the first player in NFL history to reach 150 rushing yards, 150 passing yards and two touchdown passes in the same game. One of those touchdown passes went to wide receiver A.J. BROWN, who plays his former team this week. Brown is supporting Open Door Abuse Awareness & Prevention (ODAAP).
9. TREND TIME: The No. 12 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, linebacker MICAH PARSONS, and the DALLAS COWBOYS (8-3) host the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (4-7-1) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Parsons, who has 12 sacks this season, owns nine career multi-sack games, tied with ALDON SMITH for the most games with two-or-more sacks through a player’s first two seasons since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. Parsons is also just the third player with 12-or-more sacks in each of his first two NFL seasons since 1982, joining Smith and Pro Football Hall of Famer REGGIE WHITE.
10. THIS WEEK IN NFL HISTORY: Dec. 7, 1997 (25 years ago) – KORDELL STEWART and the Steelers erase a two-touchdown deficit in a 35-24 win over Denver at Three Rivers Stadium. Stewart passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns and runs for two touchdowns in the win. Three weeks later, Denver enters the playoffs as a Wild Card team and wins three straight games, including a 24-21 triumph at Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game, en route to a Super Bowl XXXII victory over Green Bay.
11. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: The GREEN BAY PACKERS (4-8) and CHICAGO BEARS (3-9) will battle for more than pride on Sunday at Soldier Field (1:00 PM ET, FOX). Each team has 786 regular-season franchise wins, tied for the most in NFL history. The last time the Bears franchise did not lead the NFL in all-time regular-season victories was December of 1921. …Packers head coach MATT LAFLEUR has wins in each of his first seven games against Chicago.
The Week 14 Miami Dolphins at Los Angeles Chargers game on Sunday, December 11 will be played at 8:20 PM ET on NBC and the Kansas City Chiefs-Denver Broncos game will move to 4:05 PM ET on CBS, the NFL announced today.

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed all-star linebacker Adam Bighill to a two-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent in February 2023.
Bighill (5-10, 219; Central Washington University; born: October 16, 1988, in Montesano, WA) returns in 2023 for a fifth season with the Blue Bombers and his 11th in the Canadian Football League. Bighill led the Blue Bombers in total defensive plays in 2022, registering 72 tackles along with two sacks, one interception and one tackle for a loss.
He was named a West Division All-Star for the eighth time in his career and a CFL Players’ Association All-Star for a fifth time. A three-time winner of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award – 2015, 2018 and 2021 – Bighill’s 72 tackles this year moved him into seventh place on the CFL’s all-time list with 817.
A three-time Grey Cup champion – 2019 and 2021 with the Blue Bombers and 2011 with the Lions – Bighill has played in 164 games in his CFL career, including 65 over the last four seasons in Winnipeg.
