Two-time National League Cy Young Award winner owns third-lowest ERA in the Expansion Era among pitchers with 200-or-more starts

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers tonight announced that the club has agreed to terms with free agent right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom on a five-year contract covering the 2023-27 seasons.  deGrom completed a physical exam on Friday.

No financial terms were disclosed.  A press conference to introduce deGrom will be held at Globe Life Field next week following the Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego.

“We are thrilled that Jacob deGrom has decided to become a Texas Ranger,” said Rangers Executive Vice President and General Manager Chris Young. “Over a number of seasons, Jacob has been a standout Major League pitcher, and he gives us a dominant performer at the top of our rotation. One of our primary goals this off-season is to strengthen our starting pitching, and we are adding one of the best. I also want to recognize our ownership group, led by Ray Davis, for continuing to provide the resources to build a winning culture here in Arlington. On behalf of the entire organization, I welcome Jacob, his wife Stacey, and the entire deGrom family to the Rangers.”

deGrom, 34, went 5-4 with a 3.08 ERA (22 ER/64.1 IP) over 11 games/starts for the Mets in 2022, returning to the mound in early August.  He missed the season’s first four months with a stress reaction on his right scapula.  Beginning with his first start of the year on August 2, deGrom led MLB for the rest of the season in strikeouts (102), strikeout rate (42.7%), opponent OBP (.202), and WHIP (0.75). His ranks among MLB pitchers over the last 3 seasons since the beginning of 2020 (min. 200.0 IP): ERA (1st, 2.05), opp. BA (1st, .160), WHIP (1st, 0.73), strikeouts per 9 innings (1st, 14.12), and walks per 9 innings (1st, 1.48).

He has averaged 10.91 strikeouts per 9 innings in his MLB career with the Mets from 2014-22, the 2nd-best figure in Major League history among pitchers with at least 1300.0 innings (11.07 SO/9 by Chris Sale).  He has 1607 career strikeouts, the most in MLB history by any pitcher through his first 209 outings in the big leagues.  Since swing and miss statistics were first tracked in 1988, deGrom’s career 31.0% swing-and-miss strike pct. is the highest by any MLB pitcher with at least 1,000.0 IP.

He has struck out 1607 of 5217 (30.8%) batters faced in his career, the highest lifetime strikeout percentage by any pitcher in MLB history (min. 1,000.0 IP).  He owns 3 of the 5 best strikeout per batter faced rates in MLB history by a pitcher with 10+ starts in a season: 45.1% in 2021, 42.7% in 2022, and 38.8% in 2020.

deGrom was the National League Cy Young Award winner in both 2018 and 2019, the most recent pitcher to take honors in back-to-back years.  He was also the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 2014, one of just 3 pitchers in baseball history to win multiple Cy Young Awards and a Rookie of the Year Award (also Justin Verlander and Tom Seaver).  He is a four-time All-Star (2015, 2018, 2019, 2021), appearing in the Midsummer Classic in each of the first 3 years he was selected.

The Deland, Florida native has registered 154 quality starts in his first 209 career outings (73.7%) and has allowed one-or-zero runs in 101 of his 209 starts (48.3%).  The 101 such starts are the most in MLB history through a player’s first 209 career games.  His career 0.998 WHIP figure is the lowest among active qualifiers and 2nd-lowest in MLB history among pitchers with at least 1,000.0 IP to only Hall of Famer Addie Joss (0.968), who pitched for Cleveland from 1902-10.

He has spent his entire career with the Mets since being selected in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB Draft, ranking among all-time team leaders in strikeouts (4th, 1607), starts (7th, 209), wins (T7th, 82), and innings (8th, 1326.0).

deGrom has made 5 career postseason starts, going 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA (10 ER/31.0 IP) for the Mets in 2015 and 2022, posting quality starts in 4 of 5 outings.  He recorded the lone postseason win for the Mets last season, as he registered a quality start in National League Wild Card Game 2 vs. San Diego (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R-ER, 2 BB, 8 SO, 1 HR).

Has been added to the 40-man roster

HOUSTON, TX – The Astros claimed infielder Rylan Bannon off waivers from the Chicago Cubs today. Bannon, 26, has been added to the Astros 40-man roster, which now is at 37.

Bannon spent the majority of the 2022 season in the minor leagues, but did have brief stints in the Major Leagues with both the Orioles and Braves. He began the season in the Orioles organization, where he appeared in 78 games at Triple A Norfolk, hitting .229 (63×275) with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 58 RBI with 45 walks (.347 OBP/407 SLG/.754 OPS). While with the Orioles organization, he appeared in four games (all starts)  with the Major League club (2×14, .143). He collected his first career Major League hit (single) in his first career MLB game on May 12 at St. Louis.

On August 8, Bannon was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers and then shortly thereafter was claimed by the Braves on August 16. The Braves assigned him to Triple A Gwinnett, where he hit .328 (22×67) in 21 games with four doubles, two home runs, 19 RBI and four steals in four attempts (.928 OPS). On September 18, Bannon was called up to the Majors, where he appeared in one game as a defensive replacement before being sent back to Triple A. On November 18, he was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs. Bannon has played in 480 games in his minor league career, with 290 starts at third base, 123 starts at second base and 23 starts at DH.

After earning Big East Player of the Year honors while at Xavier University in 2017, Bannon was selected by the Dodgers in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In July of 2018, Bannon was traded to the Orioles as part of a six-player deal that included third baseman Manny Machado.

STORYLINES
HOSTING THE BLACKHAWKS
Tonight, the Islanders host the Chicago Blackhawks in the second and final matchup between the two clubs this season. The Islanders have collected points in five of their last six matchups against Chicago, including a 3-1 victory on November 1 of this season at United Center.
November 1, Zach Parise, Brock Nelson and Anders Lee each scored for the Islanders. Parise’s goal was his 17th career point against Chicago, leading active Islanders against the Western Conference Blackhawks. The Islanders last hosted the Blackhawks almost exactly one year ago on December 5, 2021, when the Islanders collected a point in a a shootout loss. Noah Dobson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored, while Mathew Barzal recorded two assists. Including tonight, the Islanders will play four games in the next seven days. Three will take place at UBS Arena. The Islanders’ home record is 8-4-0 through 12 games this season. Five other teams have won at least eight games on home ice this season: Boston, Toronto, New Jersey, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg. At home, the Islanders have collected 16 points and have outscored opponents 39-29.

POWER PLAY
The Islanders have scored a power play goal in eight of their last nine games, including their last five straight. It is the Islanders’ longest power play goal streak since December 2017, when they talled PPGs in six straight games. Mathew Barzal scored the lone Islander goal on Friday night on the power play. Barzal leads the Islanders with 13 power play points this season tied with Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad for the most by any Metropolitan Division skater. Noah Dobson, Brock Nelson and Anders Lee are each tied for second-most on the team with eight. Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau leads the team with four power play goals. This season, the Islanders power play on the road has been most productive, converting on 28.6% of power play opportunities, although they have recorded a power play goal in their last three straight home games (NSH, PHI, EDM).

SOGs
Friday night vs. Nashville, the Islanders registered 49 shots on goal in their 4-1 loss to the Predators. It is the most they have recorded in a single game since March 11, 2020, in Vancouver, a game that went to the shootout. In regulation, the Islanders have not recorded that many shots on goal since October 25, 2008. Nine of the Islanders’ season-high 49 shots on goal were taken by Mathew Barzal, who matched a career-high. Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson leads the team in shots on goal and is sixth amongst NHL defensemen, with 77. Brock Nelson is second on the Islanders with 75.

GWGs
In the Islanders’ last win on Saturday night vs. the Flyers, Islanders forward Brock Nelson tallied his second consecutive game-winning goal and his fourth GWG of the season. He has scored the game-winner in each of the Islanders’ last two victories (Nov. 25 at CBJ, Nov. 26 vs. PHI) and is one of just five NHLers to tally four game-winners so far this season. His four GWGS are tied with Alex Tuch, Taylor Hall and Jason Robertson for second-most in the league, behind Leon Draisaitl’s six game-winning tallies. Nelson leads the Islanders with 11 goals so far this season and has scored points in his last four straight games. Since his first goal of the season on October 28 (at CAR), the Islanders are 9-0-0 when Nelson scores a goal.

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier enters tonight’s matchup needing one point to reach his career 200th, and two goals to reach his career 100th. On December 1, the Islanders announced that forward Hudson Fasching was recalled from loan (AHL Bridgeport). Fasching, 27, has recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in 38 career NHL games. He served as captain of the Tucson Roadrunners (AHL) during the 2021-22 season, before signing with the Islanders as a free agent on August 23, 2022. This season with Bridgeport (AHL), the Milwaukee, WI native has tallied 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in eighteen games. Fasching can make his Islanders debut tonight. Islanders forward Simon Holmstrom was recalled from loan from Bridgeport (AHL) on November 23. Holmstrom made his NHL debut that night, the first Islanders rookie to make their NHL debut this season. Holmstrom recorded his first NHL point on November 25 in Columbus, an assist on Oliver Wahlstrom’s sixth goal of the season.

BIG THIRD PERIODS
On Saturday night, the Islanders scored three unanswered goals in the third period to collect their 15th win of the season. 14 of the Islanders’ 15 victories in the 2022-23 campaign have included a third period goal. It was the fourth time this season that the Islanders scored at least three goals in the final frame, and the Islanders have outscored opponents 36-22 in the third period through 25 games this season.

BLUELINERS
Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson leads blueliners in points, with 16 (seven goals, nine assists) and goals through 25 games. Dobson’s seven goals are fourth in the league amongst defensemen (E. Karlsson 11, R. Dahlin and J. Carlson 8). Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech leads the team in time on ice with 21:04 per game, and plus/minus with a plus-11 rating through 25 games. Pelech leads active Islander defensemen in games played, and has skated each of his 406 contests in an Islanders uniform. The Islanders are 6-1-0 when Pelech finds the scoresheet this season.

GOALTENDING
Entering tonight’s game, the Islanders have a team goals-against average of 2.64 through 25 games. It is the second-lowest in the Metropolitan Division (New Jersey). Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin has a save percentage of .932 through 18 games this season, second-most amongst goalies with at least ten appearances so far this season. On November 28, the NHL announced that Ilya Sorokin was selected as the the Third Star of the Week ending in November 27. In his last five starts (since November 21), Sorokin has made 152 saves on 160 shots, and has posted a .950 save percentage. Sorokin’s next win will be the 50th of his career. Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov has a 14-6-4 career record against the Chicago Blackhawks, including a .934 SV%. He has earned more career victories against just two other teams: Dallas (17), and Winnipeg (16).

Tonight’s Opponent: Buffalo Sabres
San Jose enters today’s contest on the heels of a loss in Ottawa last night. The Sharks will be completing their sixth back-to-back set
this season, and second in the last five days. The Sabres, meanwhile, were inactive last night after they hosted the Colorado Avalanche
the day prior, dropping a high-scoring 4-6 contest against the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions. Buffalo hasn’t struggled offensively in
recent days, with the team recording four or more goals in five of their last six contests. Six-foot-six forward Tage Thompson leads
Buffalo in scoring this season and he is currently clipping above a point-per-game pace for the first time in his career. San Jose claimed
victory in both legs of the season series in 2021-22, with a Nov. 2 5-3 home victory and a 3-2 victory in Buffalo on Jan. 6.

Erik Karlsson (33) POINTS LEADER Brady Tkachuk (32)

IN RARE ER…Erik Karlsson continued his historic start to the season by notching his 30th point of the campaign on Wednesday (11/23) at Seattle, becoming just the third defenseman since 1991-92 to reach the 30-point mark in 22 games, joining John Carlson and Bryan McCabe. With his pair of assists on Sunday vs. Vancouver (11/27), Karlsson became the first Sharks defenseman to reach 20 points in a calendar month (6g, 21a), a feat accomplished by three NHL defensemen last season (Roman Josi, Victor Hedman and Kris Letang). The Sharks blue-liner’s 28 points through 19 games was the second-most since the turn of the century among defensemen, trailing only Carlson’s 29 (8g, 21a) in the 2019-20 campaign. Karlsson has factored into 33 of 78 goals scored for San Jose this season (42.3-percent). Per NHL PR, the highest-ever rate in the NHL’s modern era (since the 1943-44 season) at which a defenseman factored into team goals for a season was Bobby Orr, 43.3-percent in 1969-70.

HERTL HEATING UP… Tomas Hertl scored both of San Jose’s goals in their 2-5 loss in Ottawa on Dec. 3, four days after potting a pair in a shutout win over Montreal. The forward has now found the scoresheet in 11 of the past 14 games with seven multi-point efforts in the past 16 games. Hertl registered a season-high three points in San Jose’s 11/5 game against the Anaheim Ducks, including a goal and two assists and has 22 points (6g, 16a) in the team’s previous 21 games dating back to October 20 at the New York Rangers. He had goals in three consecutive contests for the first time this season from 11/5 – 11/11 and notched his 400th career NHL point on November 11 with an assist.

IT’S TIMO TIME… Timo Meier’s six-game point streak came to a close Sunday (11/27) vs. Vancouver, finishing with eight points and five goals in that span, highlighted by his fourth-career hat trick Wednesday (11/23) against Seattle. Meier, who took sole possession of 10th on the Sharks’ all-time ranks in goals scored on Nov. 10 and ranks second on the Sharks with 12 markers on the season, claimed a five-game goal-scoring streak earlier this month (11/1 – 11/11, 6g) and found the back of the net in eight of 15 November games. He ranked tied-third in the NHL with 11 goals in November, trailing only Dallas’s Jason Robertson (18) and Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl (12). Meier leads the NHL with 131 shots on goal.

LO-VEMBER…Logan Couture took the team goal-scoring lead with his 13th of the season Tuesday at Montreal, breaking a tie with Timo Meier. The captain posted a career-long five-game goal streak which ended on Friday (11/27), finishing one game behind San Jose’s team record of six games. Couture has lit the lamp in nine of the past 12 contests with five multi-point efforts and 15 points (9g, 6a) in that span. Couture totaled 16 points (9g, 7a) in 14 November contests.

CRANK THE POWER… The Sharks’ power play has been hot of late, cashing in on 12 of 45 (26.7%) trips to the man-advantage since the start of a six-game home stand on October 25, good for a spot in the top 10 in the NHL in that span. San Jose has gone empty in just eight games in that stretch, including Nov. 10 at St. Louis and Nov. 30 at Toronto when the team had zero power play opportunities.

PRIME PENALTY KILL…San Jose killed off its first 22 penalties of the season before finally allowing a power play goal on Oct. 22 at New Jersey. The Sharks allowed three power play goals on Saturday in Ottawa for the first time in over a year (Feb. 13, 2021 vs VGK) but still enter tonight’s contest with the league’s top PK unit at 88.2-percent. Elsewhere on this road trip, the Sharks posted stout 6-for-6 and 3-for-3 efforts against Montreal and Toronto, respectively. The Maple Leafs had a scorching 28.3% power play at home this season entering Nov. 30’s game. San Jose has been operating at a league-best 87.5-percent shorthanded efficiency since the 2022 NHL All-Star break, and the Sharks have the league’s second-best penalty kill percentage since the start of the 2020-21 season (83.9-percent).

COMEBACK KIDS…The Sharks overcame a two-goal deficit en route to a 3-2 shootout victory on November 13 at Minnesota, the team’s first multi-goal comeback win of the season and first since 4/24/22 at Vegas, a 5-4 shootout decision. San Jose has come from behind in four of eight wins on the year, including each contest of a three-game win streak Friday (11/11) at Dallas (trailed 1-0), Sunday (11/13) at Minnesota (trailed 2-0) and Tuesday at Vegas (trailed 1-0 and 2-1). San Jose was the first team to earn a win over Vegas when trailing after two periods on the year (the Knights had been 7-0-0). Per NHL PR, the three-game road trip was the first time since March 14-17, 2018 that the Sharks earned three consecutive come-from-behind wins in one road stint. San Jose has erased a third-period deficit in five of the past 11 games, going 4-6-1 in that span.

REIM TIME…Sharks goaltender James Reimer earned his first shutout of the season on Oct. 23 with a 30-save performance at Philadelphia. Reimer’s shutout, his fifth as a Shark, moved him into a tie with Aaron Dell for eighth on the franchise’s all-time shutouts list. He recorded his third 41-save effort of the season on Saturday (11/19) against the New York Rangers, including saves on the first 40 shots he faced in the game. Reimer also owns a .937 shorthanded save percentage since joining the Sharks at the start of the 2021-22 season, the best in the NHL in that span (min. 10 games played) and the best two-season stretch by a goaltender since the NHL began tracking the statistic in 1997-98 (min. 30 games played, second best is Cory Schneider from 2010-12 with a .936 SV% in 58 GP).

GRIER’S GAMEPLAN…On July 5, Sharks president Jonathan Becher and assistant general manager Joe Will introduced Mike Grier as the team’s fifth General Manager and first black general manager in NHL history. The 47-year-old appeared in 221 games with the Sharks from 2006 through 2008 as part of a 14-season, 1,060 game NHL playing career. Just two days later, Grier was with the team as they selected center Filip Bystedt with the 27th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. On July 13, the Sharks traded longtime defenseman Brent Burns and signed Matt Benning, Oskar Lindblom, Markus Nutivaara and Nico Sturm on the first day of free agency. A full list of players under NHL contract that have joined the organization since July 5 is below:

QUINN FOR THE WIN…On July 26, Grier introduced David Quinn as Head Coach of the Sharks and later named Scott Gordon, Ryan Warsofsky and Brian Wiseman as Assistant Coaches, Thomas Speer NHL Goaltending Coach and Nick Gialdini Video Coach. Quinn, who most recently served as head coach for Team USA at both the 2022 Winter Olympics and 2022 World Championship, spent three seasons as head coach of the New York Rangers from 2018 to 2021, earning a 96-87-25 record. In his three years, the Rangers held the league’s eighth-best power-play percentage (22.1%), ranked seventh in team blocked shots (4,195) and takeaways (2,244), and were tied for tenth in wins when trailing first (52). Adam Fox, who made his NHL debut under Quinn in 2019-20, was awarded the Norris Trophy following the 2020-21 season. Quinn’s first NHL win was a 3-2 overtime victory against the Sharks at Madison Square Garden with the Rangers on Oct. 11, 2018. His first NHL win with the Sharks was a 3-2 overtime victory against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 21, 2022. The 56-year-old recorded his 100th career NHL win on 11/11 at Dallas, a 5-4 final.

Red-hot Anfernee Simons, Blazers welcome Pacers to town

Portland guard Anfernee Simons began breaking out as a go-to scorer last season after Damian Lillard’s season-ending abdominal injury and the trade of CJ McCollum.

He’s scoring at will again while Lillard is sidelined with a right calf injury and will look to top 35 points for the fourth time in six games when the Trail Blazers host the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night.

Simons scored a career-high 45 points on Saturday night as Portland registered a 116-111 victory over the host Utah Jazz. He was 15 of 25 from the field — including 7 of 12 from 3-point range — and made all eight of his free-throw attempts to help the Trail Blazers win for just the second time in nine games.

Simons scored 38 points in a 132-129 overtime victory over the host New York Knicks on Nov. 25. Two games later, he scored 37 points in a 118-112 home loss against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Simons averaged 17.3 points last season in his fourth NBA campaign and took off after Lillard played his final game on Dec. 31.

Simons averaged 23.1 points in 15 January games and 23.7 in 10 February outings to display he could be a lead scoring guard. He sustained a left knee injury in early March and was eventually shut down for the season.

Meanwhile, Lillard is aiming to return Sunday after missing the past seven games.

Portland’s Jerami Grant added 33 points against Utah for his third 30-point outing in the past five games.

Indiana has dropped its last two games and allowed a season worst for points in both road contests.

First, the Pacers lost 137-114 to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, and then fell 139-119 to the Jazz on Friday.

The two lopsided setbacks are part of a stretch in which Indiana has lost four of its past six games after posting a 10-6 record to open the season.

Haliburton had a season-low four assists against Utah as his franchise-record streak of seven straight games of 10 or more reached an end. He leads the NBA with a 10.9 average.

However, Haliburton is dealing with left groin soreness and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Haliburton was just 5-of-16 shooting and scored 14 points against Utah. Myles Turner led Indiana with 18 points.

The Pacers struggled throughout the contest and trailed by as many as 26 points while falling to 1-3 on a seven-game road trip.

Backup rookie point guard Andrew Nembhard recorded his first double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists on Friday.

The Pacers have beaten Portland in three of the past five matchups after losing 10 of the previous 11 encounters.

Bulls attempt to split 6-game road trip, visit Kings

Two teams headed east following the game hope to make the most of their last day in California when the Chicago Bulls visit the Sacramento Kings on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulls will be looking to break even on a six-game trip that saw them win two of the first three before dropping the last couple at Phoenix and Golden State.

They’ll be seeking their first win at Sacramento in three years when they encounter a Kings club that has won two in a row, including a 123-96 romp on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulls and Kings have not met previously this season.

Chicago appeared on the verge of a surprising comeback at Golden State on Friday night when it held the Warriors without a point for 3 1/2 minutes, allowing the visitors to close an eight-point deficit to 110-109 after a Zach LaVine 3-pointer with 2:27 to play.

Chicago’s defense cracked down on the Warriors’ next possession as well, but Draymond Green nailed a desperation 26-footer to save Golden State.

Big man Nikola Vucevic wasn’t buying talk of a moral victory afterward.

The Bulls have won at Milwaukee and Utah already on the 12-day trip. They get a nice break over the next six days, when they’re scheduled just twice — at home against the Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks.

Getting a third win on the trip doesn’t figure to be easy. The Kings have won seven of their last eight at home, including a 137-114 triumph over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday in their most recent outing in Sacramento.

Sacramento got its trademark balanced scoring in Saturday’s win, with Domantas Sabonis (24 points in 26 minutes) and Keegan Murray (23 points in 28 minutes) leading the way.

The matchup of Sabonis against the Bulls is the rekindling of a 4 1/2-year rivalry while the power forward played for the Pacers.

He was dealt to the Kings last February and very quickly found himself making an Eastern trek that wrapped up in Chicago. Sabonis had 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in a loss that night, just the sixth time in his career that he’s lost to the Bulls in 18 meetings.

Since Sabonis and new coach Mike Brown have arrived, the Kings have begun a tradition of lighting purple beams from the top of their home arena, the Golden 1 Center, following wins.

One problem: Day games like Sunday’s.
