NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (12-11) at Houston Rockets (6-17)

0

Prior to embarking on a three-game road trip that has thus far produced losses in Cleveland and Memphis, the Philadelphia 76ers appeared to have concocted a winning formula despite their rotation lacking the starting backcourt of James Harden and Tyrese Maxey.

The 76ers had won seven of nine games before registering a 28-point loss to the Cavaliers and a 117-109 setback against the Grizzlies on Friday. Philadelphia will conclude the trip on Monday against the Houston Rockets, eyeing a return to the win column despite those who are missing.

The 76ers fell to 8-6 without Harden (foot) but are optimistic that he could return against the Rockets, for whom he averaged 29.6 points and 7.7 assists over eight-plus seasons and 621 games. Harden has averaged 22 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists in nine games this season.

After playing nine games over a span of two weeks, the 76ers are hoping to parlay the current two-day break between contests into an opportunity to get their feet back underneath them as they approach a lengthy homestand.

Like Philadelphia, the Rockets have a favorable span of home games upcoming. The matchup against the 76ers is the first of eight home games in a nine-game span, including seven in succession following a short jaunt to San Antonio to face the Spurs on Thursday. The Rockets completed a four-game road trip on Saturday with a 120-101 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the second half of a back-to-back that included a comeback victory over the Phoenix Suns.

For Houston, it’s become a troubling pattern: All four games of the road trip featured the Rockets falling into double-digit deficits early, with the win against the Suns the only game that featured a completed rally. The Rockets battled uphill earlier in the week in consecutive losses against the Denver Nuggets and dug a sizable hole in San Francisco only to battle back in vain.

At this stage, the Rockets are attempting to take everything as a learning experience.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics (19-5) at Toronto Raptors (12-11)

Celtics look to spoil Raptors’ home mojo

The visiting Boston Celtics can expect to see the best version of the Raptors on Monday night since Toronto seemingly takes things to the next level when it plays at home.

Toronto’s 121-108 triumph over the Orlando Magic on Saturday extended the team’s home winning streak to three games. The Raptors are 9-2 at home this season compared to 3-9 on the road.

It was a much-needed victory for the Raptors, who got off to slow starts in their two games leading up to Saturday’s matchup — a blowout loss at New Orleans and a nine-point road setback against the Nets. Toronto shot a season-high 56.0 percent from the field (47-for-84) against Orlando.

Toronto’s O.G. Anunoby tied his season high by scoring 32 points against the Magic. Pascal Siakam added 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Scottie Barnes finished the game with 17 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

Siakam’s 26-point performance against Orlando moved him past Andrea Bargnani and into fifth place on Toronto’s all-time scoring list. He’ll enter Monday’s game with 6,604 points as a Raptor, which is 2,816 shy of Vince Carter for fourth all-time. Chris Bosh, Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan are the three players ahead of Carter.

Siakam, a 6-foot-9 forward, was selected with the 27th overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Boston is coming off Sunday night’s 103-92 victory over Brooklyn. It was the beginning of a six-game road trip for the Celtics, who received 34 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots from Jaylen Brown. Jayson Tatum added 29 points, 11 rebounds and four steals, but committed nine turnovers.

Point guard Marcus Smart did not play against Brooklyn because of a hip contusion, but may return against Toronto. The Celtics have often rested players this season when they play on back-to-back nights.

Smart is averaging 11.8 points, 7.7 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 21 games.

Although Boston is among the NBA’s elite teams, the Celtics have struggled with turnovers recently. The Celtics turned the ball over 20 times during Friday’s 120-116 overtime home loss to the Heat, with Miami scoring 21 points off those turnovers. Boston committed 15 turnovers in the victory over Brooklyn and has had at least 14 giveaways in eight of its last 11 games.

NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (10-13) at Atlanta Hawks (13-10)

0

After missing the last game with right shoulder soreness, Trae Young is expected to return to the lineup when the Atlanta Hawks host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday.

The Hawks have won two straight, including a 117-109 defeat of Denver on Friday when they played without Young and starters John Collins and De’Andre Hunter. The Thunder have also won two in a row after Saturday’s 135-128 victory at Minnesota.

Atlanta swept the two-game series last season and has won three straight against the Thunder. The Hawks have a three-game winning streak against Oklahoma City in games played in Atlanta.

Collins will miss two weeks after injuring his left ankle while landing awkwardly on a failed lob attempt. Hunter is out a week with a right hip flexor strain. Atlanta’s Bogdan Bogdanovic played for the first time after offseason knee surgery, received a standing ovation and scored five points in 22 minutes against the Nuggets.

Rookie A.J. Griffin started for Young and scored a career-high 24 points. Jalen Johnson replaced Collins in the lineup and had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Atlanta is hopeful that Young can return after being a late scratch on Friday. He averages 27.8 points and 9.6 assists.

An Oklahoma native, Young enjoys playing against the Thunder. He scored 41 and 30 points against Oklahoma City last season and is averaging 24.3 points in seven career games against the Thunder.

The Thunder got their leading scorer back on Saturday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander returned after sitting out a game with a bruised hip and scored 33 points on 10-for-17 shooting.

The Thunder had seven players finish in double figures, including Josh Giddey with 21 points. He also had 12 rebounds and seven assists.

The Thunder have made offensive rebounding a focal point. OKC has had at least 10 offensive rebounds in 18 of its 23 games. They had 13 on Saturday, including five by Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to match his career high.

Oklahoma City’s Mike Muscala was active for the first time since Nov. 21 but did not play. The veteran — who spent five seasons with Atlanta — had been out with a broken finger.

The teams will complete the season series on Jan. 25 in Oklahoma City.

NBA Preview: Milwaukee Bucks (16-6) at Orlando Magic (5-19)

0

The Milwaukee Bucks are taking the long view with their Big Three of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday in hopes of keeping the players healthy for another championship run.

All three players should be rested and available when the Bucks conclude a two-game road trip on Monday against the Orlando Magic.

After playing the first night of a back-to-back in a close loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, Milwaukee’s All-Star trio was given the night off by coach Mike Budenholzer for Saturday’s 105-96 win over Charlotte Hornets.

Bobby Portis Jr. scored 20 points in the win over Charlotte, while Jordan Nwora added 17 points and Brook Lopez and Jevon Carter each scored 14. The Bucks have won four of their last five.

Milwaukee has won its last 10 meetings against Orlando, which has lost eight in a row to possess the league’s worst record at 5-19.

The injury-plagued Magic fell to 1-11 on the road with Saturday’s 121-108 loss to the Toronto Raptors. Orlando played without several key players, including center Wendell Carter Jr., who has missed nine straight games due to an injured right foot.

Point guard Jalen Suggs has sat out the past five games with a sore right ankle, while Gary Harris (strained right hamstring), Mo Bamba (back spasms), Jonathan Isaac (left knee) and Chuma Okeke (left knee) also are sidelined.

Orlando forward Paolo Banchero, who averaged 22.6 points and 6.1 rebounds in eight games last month, was held to nine points on 2-of-8 shooting in the loss to Toronto.

One bright spot for the Magic in Saturday’s loss was the play of 7-foot-2 center Bol Bol, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.

Bol made a strong impression on Brooklyn star Kevin Durant in Orlando’s 109-102 loss to the Nets last Monday.

Orlando faces an uphill battle against Milwaukee and its deep roster, which features 13 players averaging at least 11.4 minutes per game.

Middleton is easing back into action after the three-time All-Star missed nearly eight months due to knee and wrist injuries. He had 17 points, two rebounds and seven assists in 27 minutes on Friday against the Lakers.

With Middleton out to begin the season, the Bucks’ defense remained near the top of the league’s rankings with center Brook Lopez playing a key role. Now in his 15th season, Lopez has 66 blocks in 22 games.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (13-11) at Charlotte Hornets (7-16)

0

When the Los Angeles Clippers show up for Monday night’s game in Charlotte, the Hornets should be able to relate to their opponent’s situation.

Injuries will make lineups unpredictable for both teams.

Charlotte is in its best stretch of a rough season so far despite Saturday night’s 105-96 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Hornets have won three of their last five games, with the result against Milwaukee ending a three-game home winning streak.

The Clippers will make a cross-continent trip after losing Saturday at home to the Sacramento Kings. The 123-96 result was the most lopsided this season for the Clippers, who have dropped four of their last six games.

Norman Powell (groin strain) has been a recent addition to the Clippers’ injury list, though it’s likely that Paul George and Kawhi Leonard return to action during the current four-game East Coast road trip. Luke Kennard has been out with a calf strain since mid-November.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said patience is the key in deciding when to bring back star players like George and Leonard.

On the road, the Clippers have lost three of their last four games.

The Hornets received another dose of reality in losing to a short-handed Milwaukee team that was without Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday. Charlotte needs to have strong production in several areas in order to compete against most NBA teams.

Making only five 3-pointers, as they did against the Bucks, isn’t going to get the job done.

The Hornets are confident they have a formula to get the job done.

The Clippers have five different leading scorers across the last six games. Guard John Wall, who will be returning to his home state to play at Charlotte, has led Los Angeles in scoring in two of those games. He played only 12 minutes against Sacramento as the game got away early.

Orlando Pride Signs Defender Carrie Lawrence Through the 2024 Season

Orlando native stays with Pride after joining the Club in 2019

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Pride and defender Carrie Lawrence have agreed to a new two-year contract, signing the player through the 2024 season, it was announced today. Lawrence originally joined her hometown team in 2019 as a training player, before signing her first contract with the team in 2020.

“We are happy to bring Carrie back to the Pride for two more seasons and have her continue to be a part of our process for this Club moving forward,” Head Coach Seb Hines said. “She has been with us since she came out of college and has worked her way up to being a vital member of our team. Her dependability, versatility and tenacity are exactly what we want from our players, so we are delighted to keep her here in the City Beautiful.”

“I’m excited to play another two years in a city that means so much to me, a city that I love, and for a Club that has so much potential ahead,” Lawrence said. “It’s a dream to be able to play for the best fans, my family and my community every day, and I can’t wait to get started next year. There’s no place like home!”

Lawrence is coming off a productive 2022 season for Orlando, appearing in a career-best 14 games and 12 starts in the regular season while also appearing in four of the Club’s 2022 Challenge Cup games. The Pride were unbeaten in eight of the 12 games in which Lawrence went the full 90 minutes for the team.

The University of Central Florida product has appeared in 22 games, all of which have come with the Pride since joining the team as a training player in 2019. She has recorded one assist that came back in the 2020 NWSL Fall Series in a 3-3 draw against the North Carolina Courage. The Orlando Fla., native made her professional debut on Sept. 19, 2020 going the full 90 minutes and helping keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw also against the Courage.

NHL Morning Skate – Dec. 5, 2022

* In a contest Kirill Kaprizov and Jason Robertson each extended their recent strings of success, the Stars nearly completed a four-goal, third-period comeback, but the Wild halted all hopes with a shootout victory.

Rasmus Dahlin and the Sabres outdueled Erik Karlsson and the Sharks in a showdown between the two highest-scoring defensemen in the NHL this season.

Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin are set to go head-to-head for the 11th time in their careers, with the Capitals captain holding the all-time edge (WSH: 6-2-2; EDM: 4-5-1).

KAPRIZOV, WILD WITHSTAND FOUR-GOAL COMEBACK TO OUTLAST ROBERTSON, STARS
While Kirill Kaprizov (1-0—1) played a part in helping Minnesota build a 5-1 lead through the first 29 seconds of the third period, Jason Robertson (1-1—2) scored one of four consecutive Stars goals later in the final frame to help Dallas extend the game beyond regulation. While both Kaprizov and Robertson also converted their shootout attempts, Frederick Gaudreau was finally able to help the Wild collect two points with the decisive marker.

* Kaprizov extended his goal streak to six games (6 in 6 GP dating to Nov. 23) and point streak to 12 games (8-11—19 in 12 GP dating to Nov. 9), tying the longest such runs by any player in Wild history. After also establishing the longest assist streak in franchise history earlier this season, Kaprizov is the only player among all 32 current clubs to hold the franchise record (outright or tied) for each of the three categories.

* Robertson (21-13—34 in 18 GP), who moved within two games of the longest point streak in Stars/North Stars history, has scored 21 goals through his current string of success and now sits five shy of the most goals by an active player in any point streak (Sidney Crosby (26 in 25 GP; 2010-11 w/ PIT). Mitchell Marner (19 GP w/ TOR, active) is the only player with a longer stretch in 2022-23.

* Roope Hintz (3-1—4) played a pivotal part in helping the Stars salvage one point by scoring the game-tying goal with 2:11 remaining in regulation to complete the NHL’s fourth hat trick in the month of December and second by a Stars player in as many games (Robertson: 3-0—3 on Dec. 1).

* The Stars have had at least one player with a hat trick in consecutive games for the sixth time in franchise history. The others: March 4-6, 2022 (Jason Robertson, 2x), Nov. 24-28, 2017 (Tyler Seguin & Radek Faksa), March 17-19, 1986 (Dino Ciccarelli & Scott Bjugstad), March 6-8, 1983 (George Ferguson, Steve Payne & Tim Young) and March 16-21, 1971 (Bill Goldsworthy, 2x).

DID YOU KNOW?
Mitchell Marner and the Maple Leafs will tangle with Jason Robertson and the Stars at American Airlines Center later this week on Dec. 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET. It will mark the first game in NHL history to feature two players enter the contest with an active point streak of at least 18 consecutive games.

DAHLIN KEEPS PRODUCING, OTHER YOUNG SABRES PITCH IN
Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (0-2—2) was once again a catalyst for Buffalo in a home victory, recording his eighth multi-point game of the season. The only defenseman with more multi-point outings in 2022-23 was also his opponent in Sunday’s contest: Erik Karlsson (10 GP). Karlsson (11-23—34 in 28 GP) is also the only defenseman with more points than Dahlin (8-21—29 in 24 GP) this season.

* The Sabres, who currently have the youngest roster in the NHL (average age: 25.97), received six points from players age 21 or younger to boost their season totals to 65 and surpass Montreal (63) for the most by any club in 2022-23. Among the impressive performances from players in that category was a multi-goal outing from 21-year-old Jack Quinn (2-0—2) and a three-assist performance from 21-year-old Dylan Cozens (0-3—3).

* Cozens became the third 21-year-old since 1990-91 to register three consecutive multi-point games for the Sabres. The others: Jack Eichel (3-4—7 in 3 GP from Jan. 9-18, 2018) and Tyler Ennis (2-4—6 in 3 GP from Jan. 15-20, 2011).

JETS MULTI-GOAL COMEBACK AMONG HIGHLIGHTS IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
After falling behind by two goals 5:09 into the second period, the Jets rallied with five unanswered goals the rest of the way to earn their third multi-goal comeback win of the season and improve their home record to 9-3-0 in 2022-23. Winnipeg became the seventh team to post three or more multi-goal comeback wins this season.

BOTH TEAMS THRIVING AS CASSIDY RETURNS TO FACE BRUINS
Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy is set to return to Boston for the first time, with both his current and former team ranking among the top three in the overall League standings. Boston (20-3-0, 40 points) ranks second, while Vegas (18-7-1, 37 points) is right behind them in third.

* Cassidy was Boston’s head coach for parts of six seasons from 2016-17 to 2021-22 where he guided the franchise to a 245-108-46 record across 399 regular-season games. Cassidy’s .672 points percentage at the Bruins helm was the third-highest in franchise history (min. 100 GP) behind Tom Johnson (.738 in 208 GP) and Bep Guidolin (.736 in 104 GP). Of note, Boston’s current head coach, Jim Montgomery, has a .870 points percentage through his first 23 games with the club.

* The Bruins host Cassidy and the Golden Knights at TD Garden where they have yet to lose this season (14-0-0) while setting an NHL record for longest home winning streak to start a season. With another win Monday, they would register the ninth instance in NHL history of a team winning 15 consecutive games at home (at any point within a regular season).

McDAVID, OVECHKIN READY FOR 11TH ALL-TIME MEETING
Connor McDavid (21-26—47 in 25 GP) and Alex Ovechkin (13-12—25 in 26 GP) will battle it out at Rogers Place for their 11th head-to-head meeting when the Oilers (14-11-0, 28 points) host the Capitals (10-12-4, 24 points).

* While there has only been one NHL season to conclude with McDavid scoring more goals than Ovechkin (2020-21), the duo are both within the top five in goals since the former entered the League in the 2015-16 campaign.

* Ovechkin’s team holds the head-to-head advantage through their previous 10 meetings (WSH: 6-2-2; EDM: 4-5-1), however McDavid holds the statistical advantage in those outings (6-9—15 in 10 GP) – producing more goals, assist and points than the Capitals captain (5-6—11 in 10 GP).

* While Ovechkin continues his “Road to 800”, McDavid enters Monday with multiple points in each of his past four contests – including a four-point performance in his last outing. A three-point game against Washington would make the Oilers captain the first NHL player with 50 points in 26 outings since Mario Lemieux in 2002-03 (26 GP w/ PIT). Lemieux is also the last player to do so in fewer contests (18 in 1995-96 w/ PIT).

World Cup Preview: Brazil at South Korea

It’ll be a tale of two very different teams colliding when Brazil and South Korea meet for their Round of 16 match on Monday at Stadium 974. Brazil is one of the favorites to take home the trophy while South Korea is one of the lowest-ranked nations remaining. Find out which team will advance to the quarterfinals in our Brazil vs South Korea prediction.

Brazil vs South Korea Betting Preview
Date/Time: December 5, 2 p.m. ET
Stadium: Stadium 974, Doha
TV Coverage: Fox, TSN
Opening Brazil vs South Korea Odds: Brazil -400 | O/U 2.5

Brazil opened as the favorite at -400 on the moneyline with South Korea getting +1200 as the massive underdog. The total was set at 2.5 goals with the UNDER going 9-2 in Brazil’s last 11 matches. The Brazilians lost their last game of the group stage but should still be considered the clear favorite in any Brazil vs South Korea prediction.

Brazil Looks To Rebound After Loss To Cameroon
After two relatively comfortable wins in their first two matches, Brazil suffered a massive upset in its final group-stage game on Friday, falling 1-0 to Cameroon. With top spot in the group more or less sealed, the Brazilians played a much weaker starting 11 and were unable to pierce Cameroon’s defense. The match was scoreless until added time when Vincent Aboubakar scored the winner in the 92nd minute as Cameroon became the first African nation to defeat Brazil at a World Cup.

Despite the loss, Brazil will still feel confident about its chances going forward in the tournament. We didn’t see Brazil’s top squad in the loss and we arguably haven’t seen them play their best football yet in this tournament. The Brazilians have advanced to at least the quarterfinals in seven straight World Cups, so history is certainly on their side.

South Korea Riding High Off Upset Win
On the flip side, South Korea goes into the Round of 16 riding the high of an impressive upset win as they defeated Portugal 2-1 on Friday to take second spot in Group H. After Ricardo Horta scored five minutes in to give Portugal the lead, the South Koreans responded with a goal from Kim Young-gwon in the 27th to tie it up. It remained in a deadlock until the dying moments when Hwang Hee-chan scored in the 91st minute to give his nation a monumental victory.

The South Koreans earned their first Round of 16 berth since 2010, when they fell to another South American team in Uruguay. The only time they’ve advanced past the Round of 16 was in 2002 when they co-hosted the tournament with Japan and took fourth place.

Brazil Vs South Korea Game Prop: Total Goals OVER 2.5 (-115)
Brazil has played three low-scoring matches so far but South Korea has hit the OVER in two of its three games. With emotions riding high in the knockout stage, expect to see Brazil’s best performance of the tournament – but also a big push from the South Koreans. Either way, we should get more than a couple goals.

Brazil: Keys To Victory
Brazil will be happy to have taken top spot in Group G but they certainly have a lot more to give after scoring just three goals in three matches. Neymar’s six career goals at the World Cup ranks him near the top among all active players – can he finally find the back of the net in Qatar and give his team a spark? They might need it against a surprisingly strong South Korean side.

South Korea: Keys To Victory
Scoring hasn’t really been a challenge for South Korea, which has found the back of the net five times in its last two matches. While we haven’t seen too many goals from Brazil, you’ve got to expect a big attacking push from the uber-talented Brazilians in this one. Can South Korea hold them to a goal or less? If they can, they’ll likely come out on top.

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox and free agent right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger have agreed to terms on a one-year, $12-million contract, which includes a mutual option for the 2024 season.

Under terms of the agreement, Clevinger will receive $8 million in 2023, with a mutual $12-million option for 2024 that includes a $4-million buyout.
