NBA Preview: New York Knicks (42-32) at Orlando Magic (30-43)

0

The New York Knicks’ quest for a guaranteed playoff spot and a top-six finish in the Eastern Conference has not been doomed by consecutive losses.

However, the Knicks will attempt to end their skid Thursday night when they visit the Orlando Magic to complete a back-to-back set in Florida. The urgency of the situation has increased due to the defeats.

On Wednesday night, the Knicks suffered a 127-120 defeat to the Miami Heat to kick off their southern tour. By defeating the host Washington Wizards 122-112 on Tuesday night, the Magic maintained their slim chances of qualifying for the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.

The loss cut the Knicks’ (42-32) two-game lead over the Brooklyn Nets (39-33) and Heat (40-34)—who are virtually tied for sixth place—while keeping them in fifth place in the East. The play-in tournament determines the final two playoff teams from the seventh through tenth-place finishers.

As they did following Monday’s 140-134 defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Knicks were left to rue a poor defensive performance on Wednesday night.

Two nights earlier, the Timberwolves shot 61.4 percent (51 of 83) overall and 58.3 percent (14 of 24) from beyond the arc, while the Heat shot 57% (45 of 79) from the field and 57.1 percent (16 of 28) on 3-point attempts.

The Knicks overcame a 16-point deficit in the third quarter to take a few leads in the fourth on Monday. On Wednesday, they came back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter and held the lead twice in the fourth. However, the Heat took a 101-100 lead with 7:05 remaining on a 3-pointer from Max Strus, which kicked off a game-ending stretch in which Miami made all five 3-point attempts.

By defeating the 12th-place Wizards on Tuesday, the Magic (30-43), who fell to 32-41 with a 118-104 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night, tightened the race for the final play-in spot. The Magic are currently in 13th place in the East.

After going 2-5 from February 25 to March 9, Orlando is 3-3 in its last six games.

After the Chicago Bulls’ 116-91 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, the Magic are 4 1/2 games behind 10th-place Chicago. However, for a team whose top five scorers are all under 25, even staying on the fringes of postseason contention could be beneficial.

NHL Morning Skate – March 23, 2023

0

* The NHL witnessed the fastest player to reach 60 goals in a season in 27 years when Connor McDavid reached the mark via an overtime winner.

* Sidney Crosby hit the 30-goal mark for the 11th time in his career to tie franchise legend Mario Lemieux atop a Penguins all-time list and achieve an NHL first in the process.

* A number of storylines are on the board during a 12-game Thursday, including the Bruins, who are in a position to clinch the Atlantic, and the Wild, who can overtake first in the Central.

MAKE THAT 60 GOALS FOR McDAVID
A third-period tying tally by the Oilers set the stage for the perfect storybook ending: Connor McDavid (2-0—2) scoring goal No. 60 as the overtime winner. Edmonton improved to 41-23-8 and required its fewest games to reach 90 points in a season (72 GP) since 1986-87 (68 GP).

* McDavid became the fourth active player to record 60 goals in a season, joining Alex Ovechkin (65 in 2007-08), Auston Matthews (60 in 2021-22) and Steven Stamkos (60 in 2011-12).

* The Oilers captain is now on pace for 68 goals, which will mark the most in a single campaign since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96 (69). He also moved within one of his 300th career goal – he is on pace to become the third-fastest active player to reach the mark.

* The NHL features a 60-goal scorer in consecutive seasons for the fourth time in League history following a 14-year run from 1980-81 to 1993-94, six straight campaigns from 1973-74 to 1978-79 as well as back-to-back seasons in 1970-71 and 1971-72.

CROSBY HITS 30-GOAL MARK AS PENGUINS PUSH INTO WILD CARD POSITION
Sidney Crosby (1-0—1) opened the scoring with his 30th goal of the season and Jeff Carter (2-0—2) potted a pair to help Pittsburgh end its own four-game skid and snap Colorado’s six-game winning streak. The Penguins (35-26-10, 80 points) moved past the idle Panthers (38-26-7, 79 points) to take over the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* Crosby became the 20th player in NHL history to record at least 11 career 30-goal seasons while matching Mario Lemieux for the most in Penguins history.

* Crosby (35 years, 227 days), who scored 39 times during his rookie season, became the first player in NHL history to record a 30-goal season at age 18 and then again at age 35 or older.

* Carter scored the 88th game-winning goal of his career, trailing only Alex Ovechkin (124) for the most among active players – Crosby trails right behind with 86.

MacKINNON EXTENDS HOME POINT STREAK IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
Nathan MacKinnon collected another assist at Ball Arena to extend his home point streak to 18 games and earn a spotlight in the Wednesday edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates. MacKinnon’s 29 home points in 2023 trail only Connor McDavid (34), Matthew Tkachuk (32), Leon Draisaitl (31) and Evgeni Malkin (30) for the most this calendar year.

BRUINS CLOSING IN ON ATLANTIC DIVISION TITLE
The NHL-leading Bruins (54-11-5, 113 points) are back in action Thursday as they continue to chase down single-season records for wins and points. While Boston can capture 55 victories in a single season for the second time in franchise history (57 in 1970-71), it can also secure an Atlantic Division crown with a victory against Montreal in any fashion anda Toronto loss to Florida in regulation.

* The Bruins (71 GP on Thursday) can become the fastest team to clinch a division title in an 82-game season since 2013-14 when the League returned to a four-division format. Before that, only two clubs secured a “y” beside their name in the standings faster under the same conditions: the 1995-96 Red Wings (68 GP) and 1996-97 Avalanche (70 GP).

* Three players who were part of the 2013-14 Bruins team noted above remain with the club: David KrejciPatrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. Krejci and Bergeron finished first and second in team scoring that season. Boston won the Presidents’ Trophy and defeated the Red Wings in the First Round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs but then lost in Game 7 of the Second Round to the Canadiens, who had finished third in the Atlantic Division.

* The Bruins can become the first team in a dozen years – and eighth since 1979-80 – to clinch a division title before any other club secured a berth into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. To date, the only teams to do so in the 43 seasons over that span (regardless of length or division format) are the 2010-11 Canucks, 2009-10 Capitals, 2007-08 Red Wings, 2003-04 Lightning, 2001-02 Red Wings, 2000-01 Avalanche and 1995-96 Red Wings. Of note: in 2000-01 and 1995-96, Colorado and Detroit clinched the No. 1 seed in their division mere hours before another club secured the second playoff spot later that same day.

WILD EYE TOP SPOT IN CENTRAL IN ESPN SHOWCASE. . .
For the first time in more than two months, there can be a new No. 1 seed in the Central Division as the Wild (41-22-8, 90 points) put their nine-game road point streak on the line against the Flyers (26-32-12, 64 points). Should the Stars – also in action Thursday – suffer a loss and the Wild collect at least a point, Minnesota can sit atop its division at this stage of a season (min. 70 GP) for the first time since 2007-08, the campaign it claimed its only division title (Northwest).

. . . WHILE OTHER WEST CLUBS CHASE DOWN WILD CARD SPOT
The Kraken (39-24-7, 85 points), Jets (40-29-3, 83 points), Flames (32-25-15, 79 points) and Predators (35-26-8, 78 points) are all in action – including a head-to-head tilt between Seattle and Nashville – as the Wild Card race in the Western Conference heats up.

* Seattle (70 GP) holds two games in hand on both Winnipeg (72 GP) and Calgary (72 GP), while Nashville is set to contest its 70th contest. The Kraken, already with 12 more wins than their inaugural campaign (27-49-6, 60 points), can become the first franchise in NHL history to produce a 27-point improvement from its first-ever season to its second.

* Winnipeg begins its Southern California road trip in Anaheim before travelling to Los Angeles on Saturday and San Jose on March 28. The Jets have found themselves within the Western Conference’s playoff picture for majority of the 2022-23 campaign (152 of 167 days; 91%). They are one of five Western Conference clubs in that position for at least 90 percent of the season: Dallas (166 of 167: 99.4%), Vegas (163 of 167: 97.6%), Seattle (157 of 167: 94%) and Los Angeles (154 of 167: 92.2%).

TKACHUK BROTHERS LOOKING TO LEAD THEIR TEAMS’ PLAYOFF PUSHES
Four teams separated by seven points in the race for the second Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference take to the ice Thursday with the Penguins (35-26-10, 80 points), who currently hold that final spot, Panthers (36-28-7,79 points), Capitals (33-31-8, 74 points) and Senators (34-32-5, 73 points) in action.

Matthew Tkachuk (34-62—96 in 2022-23) is set to skate in his 500th career game and has played a pivotal role in Florida’s climb up the Eastern Conference standings – a stretch that saw the club eight points behind the Islanders for the second Wild Card spot entering games on Jan. 1.

Brady Tkachuk (30-42—72 in 71 GP) has already established a career high for points in a single season and sits one goal shy of recording his most in a campaign (also 30 in 2021-22). Ottawa, which last made the Stanley Cup Playoffs during the 2016-17 season en route to a Conference Finals appearance, has eight of its remaining 11 games against clubs currently occupying a playoff spot – including two crucial head-to-head meetings against brother Matthew and the Panthers (March 27 & April 6).

Boxing: GH3 Promotions Signs Undefeated Super Middleweight Junior Younan

Roseland, NJ – Junior “The Young God” Younan, an unbeaten super middleweight, has signed a co-promotional deal with Amaury Piedra, according to GH3 Promotions.

Younan, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, has an overall record of 17-0-1, including 11 knockouts.

“This is a fantastic deal for us. Junior has always been a talented young man. We intend to provide him with the opportunities he needed. He has the potential to be a real player in the super middleweight division, and if he can get a few victories, he will eventually win the world championship.” GH3 Promotions’ Vito Mielnicki stated that.

“I am thankful for the chance. For the remainder of the year, we have a nice plan. I can’t wait for what lies ahead. I want to fight in May and fight on a PBC platform after that. The objective is to acquire Super Middleweight belts. I’m getting better, so I hope people aren’t putting me off. When they see me back in the ring, individuals will see that I am as yet the warrior individuals were discussing when I turned proficient. I stopped a man who had only lost once in less than a round after a year’s layoff. I’ll be ready for anything after these few fights. Before, the only issue was persistent fighting. Younan added, “And knowing that I will be active, I will be prepared for the greatest challenges.”

Younan was an exceptionally promoted novice fighter who gathered a 90-5 record prior to turning proficient in 2013 at 18 years old. Younan was dubbed “a boxing prodigy” by The New York Times when he was 10 years old. He was a two-time National Junior Golden Gloves champion, won the 2011 National Junior Olympic championship, and was the No. USA Boxing ranked him as the #1 junior boxer in his weight class.

Younan became a professional fighter on November 9, 2013, after defeating Kenneth Taylor Schmitz in the first round. Younan has crushed Mike Fellow (9-2-1) and in his last session, he halted Dauren Yeleussinov (10-1-1) on July 30, 2022 in Brooklyn.

We can see Vito’s passion and how he interacts with his fighters. He responds immediately and values his fighters. We have high hopes for the future. PBC adored what they saw during our battle in July. Junior will be up to any super middleweight competitor, and Vito will provide us with opportunities on a PBC Platform. We are traditional and hold the belief that real fighters must fight real fighters. Junior will be doing exactly that, according to Sherif Younan, Younan’s father and trainer.

Tickets for the event, which is being promoted by Top Rank in conjunction with DiBella Entertainment, will go on sale on Friday, January 13 at 10 a.m. PT. They will cost $29 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com and the Arena Box Office.

The Save Mart Center, which has hosted Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs) in six of his previous bouts, welcomes him back to his native Avenal, California, where he has been training for the past year. Ramirez bounced back in March of last year with a unanimous decision victory over Jose Pedraza, a former two-weight world champion, after losing by decision to Josh Taylor for the undisputed junior welterweight title in 2021. Since he defeated Amir Imam to win the WBC world title in March 2018, he ranks among the best 140-pounders in the sport. Ramirez stopped Maurice Hooker in six brutal rounds to unify the WBC and WBO titles after twice defending that title. In August 2020, Ramirez defeated Viktor Postol by majority decision, securing both belts and preparing for the Taylor matchup.

Ramirez stated, “I am blessed to be able to fight in front of my Central Valley fans once again.” Fresno and the Save Mart Center “hold a special place in my heart.” Richard Commey is a champion fighter who stands to gain everything. On March 25, I anticipate Commey in its best form. I am more motivated than ever to demonstrate that I am the best junior welterweight in the world, and my objective is to become champion once more.

Rick Mirigian, Ramirez’s manager, stated, “Ramirez is out to prove some things, and he is motivated like I have never seen.” Everything begins in Fresno before 15,000 old neighborhood fans.”

Accra, Ghana’s Commey (30-4-1, 27 knockouts) established himself as one of the sport’s best lightweights by winning Commonwealth titles and winning the IBF world title in February 2019. He won the title for ten months after defeating former world champion Ray Beltran and then shockingly losing to Teofimo Lopez in the second round at Madison Square Garden. Commey’s lightweight career came to an end in December 2021 when he lost by decision to Vasiliy Lomachenko. He fought Pedraza to a 10-round draw in his junior welterweight debut in August of that year.

Commey said, “I need to thank my group for putting me on the way to satisfying my fantasy about turning into a two-weight best on the planet. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to Top Rank and Bob Arum for permitting me to headline against Jose Ramirez, a formidable opponent, once more demonstrating their trust in me. I’m ready for the challenge and plan to make Ghana and all of my fans proud.

Estrada (23-0, 9 KOs), from East Los Angeles, California, gets back to her home state purpose on binding together world titles without precedent for her finished profession. The veteran, who is now 30, became a professional nearly a decade ago and has competed at the highest level in three weight classes. She won consecutive bouts in 2021 to win the WBA minimumweight and WBO light flyweight titles. After that, Estrada gave up the light flyweight championship to fight for undisputed glory at minimumweight. In November of last year, she returned from a nearly 11-month layoff to eliminate Jazmin Gala Villarino.

Estrada stated, “I want to give Tina credit for being a world champion who, unlike Yokasta Valle, is not afraid of a unification fight.” We decided to fight the woman who beat Yokasta because we couldn’t get Yokasta into the ring. The Fresno fans have a lot of passion, so they can expect a great show.

After rising from interim champion in 2018, Germany’s Rupprecht (12-0-1, 3 KOs) has defended her world title five times. Prior that year, she brought down Valle, who is the ongoing IBF and WBO bound together minimumweight title holder In July 2021, Rupprecht edged previous best on the planet Katia Gutierrez by split choice. She conquered Peruvian veteran Rocio Gaspar to set up the Estrada match after returning to the ring after more than a year. Rupprecht has fought all but one of her professional fights in Germany, and she will travel nearly 6,000 miles to defeat Estrada’s undisputed objective.

Rupprecht stated, “It is a dream come true for me to fight in America against a fellow world champion in a world title unification.” Seniesa is regarded as one of the sport’s best fighters, and I am eager to determine who is the division’s true number one. Another big night for female boxing and a contender for Fight of the Year will be this one. I’ll come out on top and bring two world titles with me back to Germany.

The following standouts are expected to be on the undercard, which will be exclusively streamed live on ESPN+:

Lightweight competitor Raymond “Risk” Muratalla (16-0, 13 KOs), from Fontana, California, and prepared by Robert Garcia, makes his 2023 presentation in a 10-rounder. In 2022, Muratalla went 3-0, including stoppage victories over Jeremy Hill and Miguel Contreras, two veterans.

In an eight-round bout, rising lightweight Karlos Balderas (14-1, 12 KOs), a Santa Maria, California, native who competed for the United States at the 2016 Olympics, hopes to record his sixth victory in a row. Balderas defeated Esteban Sanchez in an eighth-round TKO, a career-best performance that set a career high.

Antonio “El Gigante” Mireles (6-0, 6 KOs), a 6-foot-9 heavyweight from Des Moines, Iowa, goes for the gold seven in a six-rounder. Mireles has three knockouts in the first round and three stoppages in the second.

The former U.S. amateur star from Brisbane, California, lightweight prospect Charlie Sheehy (5-0, 4 KOs) makes his third professional fight in a six-round bout in Fresno.

In a six-round middleweight bout, Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (8-0, 2 KOs), who trains with Ramirez at Robert Garcia Boxing Academy, will take on an unidentified opponent.

The event is scheduled to begin at 1 a.m. GMT / 9 p.m. ET. The main event ringwalks are scheduled for 3 a.m. GMT / 11 p.m. ET. While Plant is best known for his exceptional boxing acumen and Benavdez for his power, both fighters have demonstrated their versatility in recent bouts. A night not to be missed on SHOWTIME PPV on March 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas is the result of all of this.

“Sometimes in this business, people say it’s bad blood to sell a fight,” stated Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. I personally guarantee that there will be genuine animosity and an incredible fight in this one. Don’t pass it up!

Stephen Espinoza, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc., stated, “This is one of the biggest and potentially most explosive fights that can be made in boxing, not just in the super middleweight division.” “It pits two fighters at the peak of their athletic primes, both with prodigious skill-sets and contrasting styles, both of whom take great pride in the way they perform.” The matchup is intriguing, and there is no way to know what will happen. We have a volatile, 50-50 matchup and a potential candidate for fight of the year when we factor in their genuine and mutual dislike for one another. As we close out our 2023 schedule, SHOWTIME is pleased to present this event, which marks yet another compelling and significant main event.”

When he defeated Ronald Gavril by split decision for the vacant WBC title on SHOWTIME in 2017, the 25-year-old undefeated Benavadez (26-0, 23 KOs) became the youngest-ever 168-pound world champion at just 20 years old. Benavdez, who was born in Phoenix but now lives and trains in Seattle, has established himself as a contender in the super middleweight division with his knockout power and growing ring savvy with each fight.

Under the watchful eye of his father and trainer, Jose, Sr., Benavdez went from weighing 250 pounds to being a boxing prodigy when he was 15 years old. what’s more, his sibling and veteran competitor Jose Jr., as he broadly stood his ground in fighting against middleweight champions Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin. Benavídez is riding a line of six straight knockout triumphs heading into the session against Plant, having most as of late scored a resonating third-round stoppage of previous hero David Lemieux in his last battle in May. “I can hardly hold on until they put me in the ring with him so I can beat his butt,” said Benavídez. ” Boxing fans are going to have a great time tonight. I am eager to enter the room and deliver the assault that they are expecting.

Plant, who has a record of 22-2 with 13 knockouts, has used his exceptional boxing skills to become a world champion. In his most recent fight, he defeated Anthony Dirrell with a big knockout and was named Knockout of the Year for 2022 by CBS Sports, Boxing Scene. One of the most memorable finishes of 2022 came during Plant’s October debut with new trainer Stephen Edwards, when he ended a heated rivalry with Dirrell by knocking him out with a single punch.

In 2019, the 30-year-old Las Vegas resident and Nashville, Tenn., native Plant defeated Jose Uzcategui by unanimous decision to win the IBF title. Plant won the championship by knocking out Uzcategui in the second and fourth rounds. He successfully defended his title three times, defeating Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz, and former champion Caleb Truax by unanimous decision. He lost the title to Canelo Alvarez in an undisputed championship match in November 2021. Alvarez was frustrated at times by his smooth boxing skills, but he beat Dirrell to set up this much-anticipated matchup with Benavidez.

Plant stated, “I made it clear I wanted to go after the biggest fight that could be made in the division after I knocked out Dirrell.” I’m back to show the world why I’m one of the most popular boxers in this one of the most anticipated matches.

I’m focused and sharp. I’m looking forward to March 25 not only to demonstrate who the superior man is but also to provide the fans with what they’ve been waiting for.
