CFB Myrtle Beach Bowl Preview: Old Dominion Monarchs at Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Old Dominion (6-6, 5-3 C-USA) vs. Tulsa (6-6, 5-3 American)
Monday, Dec. 20, 2021 • 2:30 p.m. • ESPN
Myrtle Beach, S.C. • Brooks Stadium (20,000)

Old Dominion Monarchs Notes

• For the second time in school history and first time since 2016, Old Dominion is in a bowl game, as ODU will play Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

• Old Dominion defeated Charlotte on November 27, 56- 34, to become bowl eligible. Joe Joe Headen and Jordan Young registered interceptions on Charlotte’s first two possessions and Ali Jennings caught nine passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way.

• ODU was 1-6 when it reached the bye week. The Monarchs have won five-straight since then by an average score of 36-22.

• ODU and North Texas both started this season 1-6. They join the 2016 Miami (Ohio) team that started 0-6, as the only teams since 1936 (AP Poll era) to win six games after starting a season 1-6 or worse.

• ODU head coach Ricky Rahne will participate in his first game as head coach, but his 11th straight as a coach. Rahne’s streak started in 2010 at Kansas State. He is 6-4 in those games.

• Joe Joe Headen, Isaac Weaver and Jordan Young were on the ODU team that went to the 2016 Bahamas Bowl, but all three redshirted. The trio is in their sixth year with the program.

• This will be the first meeting between ODU and Tulsa.

• The 2021 season is head coach Ricky Rahne’s first but second overall season at ODU. Rahne was hired in December of 2019 but ODU did not play football in 2020.

The Outcome
An ODU win would mean:
Make ODU 7-6 on the season.
Give ODU its sixth-straight win.
Give ODU its first winning season since 2016.
Make ODU 2-0 in bowl games.

The Meeting
This is the first meeting between Old Dominion and Tulsa.

Captains
Seniors Nick Rice, Isaac Weaver and Jordan Young are team captains. Weaver was a team captain in 2019, while Young and Rice are first-time captains.

Sixth Year Monarchs
For the first time in program history, ODU will have a player in his sixth year in the program. And they have three. Joe Joe Headen, Isaac Weaver and Jordan Young are each in their sixth year at Old Dominion. All three have graduated and will receive their masters  degree by next spring.

Welcome to College Football
ODU had 23 players that played their first NCAA Division I college football game against Wake Forest. Of those, 16 are freshman. ODU had 10 more players see their first action in the win over Hampton.

Block Party
For the first time since WKU, ODU blocked a kick, and it was a huge moment in the win over FAU. Jason Henderson broke through and blocked an extra points after FAU cut ODU’s lead to 20-16. R’Tarriun Johnson returned the kick 80 yards for two points and a 22-16  lead. It was the second time this season ODU blocked a PAT.

Kuuuuuuuuntz
Sophomore tight end Zack Kuntz has become a fan favorite not only of Monarch Nation, but also the ODU quarterback.

Kuntz had five receptions in the season finale win over Charlotte.

He ranks second among FBS tight ends in receptions (71), eighth in receiving yards (674) and tied for 12th in touchdowns (5).

A transfer from Penn State, Kuntz has been ODU’s leading receiver in 9-of-12 games so far this season. He has five games with eight or more catches.

Ali With the Knockout
It’s been a tale of two halves for Ali Jennings this season. He finished the second half of the season with nine receptions for 252 yards and three touchdowns in ODU’s 56-34 win to make ODU bowl eligible over Charlotte.

The 252 yards was the second most by a receiver in ODU history and the most in ODU’s seven years in FBS. The 252 yards was the fourth most by an FBS receiver this season.

Young Defense Standing Strong
At this point of the season, some coaches will say about young players; “they’re not freshman anymore.” This year at ODU, that may
mean something as 29 true or Covid freshman have played this year for the Monarchs.

Defense Stands Out
Old Dominion’s defense, led by Broyles Nominee and (Assistant coach of the Year) defensive coordinator Blake Seiler, has been a
constant for much of the year for the Monarchs. ODU tied a school record this year allowing 20 points or less five times, and have had the best rush defense in school history.

Defensive Rankings
Total Defense Rush D Pass D Scoring D
372.1 (60) 125.0 (27) 247.1 (98) 27.1 (78)

Starting Lineup Consistency
Through the first five games of the year, Old Dominion started a different starting offensive line each game. After the fifth game of the season at UTEP, the Monarchs kept the same starting five for seven of the remaining eight games.

Left tackle Khadere Kounta, left guard Tyran Hunt, center Isaac Weaver, right guard Leroy Thomas and Nick Saldiveri started seven of those final eight games, with Santana Saunders starting the game in between at left tackle.

Weaver, Thomas and Saldiveri started all 12 games up front.
