MLS Preview: Sporting Kansas City (0-7-3) at Seattle Sounders FC (6-2-2)

The Seattle Sounders FC beat Sporting Kansas City, 4-1, at Children’s Mercy Park on March 25. Seattle has not won consecutive matches against Sporting Kansas City since back-to-back 1-0 wins in May 2013 and March 2014 while sporting Kansas City was still in the Eastern Conference.

The Seattle Sounders FC have won four of their first five home matches this season (D1), keeping a clean sheet in all five matches. Seattle is the third team in MLS history to keep clean sheets in each of its first five home matches of a season (Columbus Crew SC – 2020, New England Revolution – 2005), something no team has done in six straight.

Sporting Kansas City (W0 D3 L7) is the fourth team in MLS history with three points or fewer through its first 10 matches of a season. Sporting Kansas City has scored only three goals this year, the fewest at this stage of a season in league history as no team had fewer than five goals after 10 games before.

MLS league-leading goal-scorer Jordan Morris scored half of his eight goals this season in Seattle’s win at Sporting Kansas City on March 25. In fact, Morris scored more goals against Sporting Kansas City in that match (4) than Sporting Kansas City has managed in all 10 of its MLS matches this season combined (3).

Johnny Russell has scored six goals in 10 career matches against the Seattle Sounders FC, one of three opponents he’s scored six times against (Los Angeles Galaxy, FC Dallas). No player has scored against Seattle than Russell since he joined MLS in 2018.
