MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (0-0-0) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (0-0-0)

The Whitecaps have won 10 of their 13 true home games against Real Salt Lake, including the last two in a row (W1 L1 in neutral site home games). Vancouver has won 10 home games against Real Salt Lake, more than any other team in MLS history.

In its first four MLS seasons (2011-2014), Vancouver won its season opener, but since then, it has only managed two victories (D1 L5). The only time Vancouver has started a season on the road was last year, when they lost 4-0 to the Crew on the first weekend.

Since 2010, Real Salt Lake has not lost a season opener (W6 D7), which matches C Dallas’ current record for the longest such streak in MLS history. Despite playing 12 of the 13 games on the road, Real Salt Lake has survived.

In 2022, Ryan Gauld was responsible for four goals and three assists on seven of Vancouver’s last 11 goals. Since making his MLS debut in August 2021, Gauld has scored 12 goals and provided 15 assists, contributing seven more goals than any other Whitecaps player.

Last year, nine different Real Salt Lake players scored at least one headed goal, ranking them second only to Nashville SC’s 14 goals. With a league-high 27.9% of its 43 goals coming from headers, Real Salt Lake was the team most dependent on headed goals.
