MLS Preview: Portland Timbers (5-7-5) at San Jose Earthquakes (7-5-5)

While the San Jose Earthquakes have totaled four points in 16 all-time regular season matches at the Portland Timbers (W0 D4 L12), it has lost only four of 15 home meetings with the Portland Timbers in regular season play (W6 D5).

The San Jose Earthquakes have won six of their eight home matches this season (D2) and are one of three teams without a home loss this year. The San Jose Earthquakes’ 20 points through eight home matches are the second most in club history after taking all 24 possible points in its first eight at home in 2002.

The Portland Timbers ended a four-match winless run with a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday. The Portland Timbers have put together just one winning streak since the start of last July, winning four matches in a row in August-September last season.

Jeremy Ebobisse scored his 25th goal for the San Jose Earthquakes since being traded from the Portland Timbers in August 2021 in San Jose’s win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday. Not only are Ebobisse’s 25 goals the most on San Jose Earthquakes in that time but are also more than any other Portland Timbers player has scored in that time (D. Asprilla – 19).

Evander set up Frank Boli for the lone goal of the game in the Portland Timbers’ victory over FC Dallas on Sunday. At least one of Evander (2 goals, 3 assists) or Boli (3 goals) have been involved in all seven goals the Portland Timbers have scored since the beginning of May.
