MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (10-8-7) at Atlanta United FC (7-9-8)

Atlanta United’s only win over the Red Bulls in MLS play was a 3-0 victory in a playoff match in November 2018. In the regular season, New York is unbeaten in 11 regular season meetings (W7 D4), the most regular season games a team has played against another without ever losing in MLS history.

Atlanta United has lost only two of its last 19 home MLS matches dating back to last September (W11 D6). The Five Stripes have not managed back-to-back home wins, however, since victories over Sporting Kansas City and Charlotte in its first two home matches of the 2022 season.

While the Red Bulls have lost three straight home matches, they’re undefeated in four straight on the road (W2 D2). Only Austin (26 points, 8 wins) has more away points or wins than New York (24, 7) this season as the Red Bulls have collected more road points in a season just once: 28 in 2018.

Andrew Gutman followed his late winner against Seattle on August 6 with a late equalizer against Cincinnati on Saturday. Gutman has scored goals in consecutive games after scoring just twice in his first 65 MLS appearances (incl. playoffs) with both of those goals coming with the Red Bulls in 2021.

Lewis Morgan, the Red Bulls’ leading scorer this season with 10 goals, has scored four times in eight career matches against Atlanta United, tied for his most goals against any opponent in his MLS career (Toronto). Morgan scored an 83rd-minute penalty in the Red Bulls’ 2-1 win over Atlanta on June 30.
