MLS Preview: New York City FC (12-7-6) at Chicago Fire (8-11-6)

New York City FC has won eight of its last 13 MLS matches against the Fire (D3 L2), though only one of those wins was in Chicago, a 4-3 victory in 2020. Since 2017 the Fire have a record of W2 D3 L1 at home against NYCFC.

The Fire have lost only one of their last six home matches (W4 D1), keeping clean sheets in all five matches in which they avoided defeat. Chicago has kept 11 clean sheets in its last 15 home tied for the most in a 15-match home span in league history. Only RSL in 2010-11 has kept 12 in 16 home matches.

New York City FC has lost three straight matches, conceding three goals in all three defeats. NYCFC has allowed three goals in three straight MLS matches s they had allowed just 11 goals in their previous 15 league games combined dating back to the beginning of May.

Xherdan Shaqiri has provided an assist on four the Fire’s last five MLS goals, including the last three in a row. Shaqiri has scored (4) or assisted (11) more than half (15/28) of the Fire’s MLS goals this season.

Luxembourg international Maxime Chanot scored New York City’s only goal against Charlotte on Wednesday. He’s the first player from outside of South America to score for NYCFC since American Christ Gloster on May 1, ending a run of 25 straight NYCFC goals scored by South American (exlc. own goals).
