MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (7-10-8) at Columbus Crew SC (8-6-10)

Columbus has won six of its last MLS meetings with Atlanta United (L1) dating back to 2019, including a 2-1 victory on May 28.Only LAFC (7 vs. Real Salt Lake) and New England (7 vs D.C. United) have won more regular season games against a single opponent since the start of the 2019 season.

The Crew’s 3-2 win over New York City FC om August 6 was just the third in win in their last 10 home matches (D3 L4). Columbus hasn’t won consecutive home matches since a four-game winning streak that spanned the end of last season and the first two home matches in 2022.

Atlanta United is winless in 10 straight away matches (D4 L6), though it has drawn two straight and three of its last four on the road. Atlanta’s run is the longest active road winless run in MLS and the second longest in club history(14 straight from October 2020 to August 2021).

Half of Jonathan Mensah’s six career MLS goals have been scored against Atlanta United, including a first-minute goal in the Crew’s win at Mercedes Benz Stadium on May 28. That goal is the only time the Crew have scored in the first minute of a regular season match in the club’s MLS history.

Josef Martinez scored his 100th MLS goal (regular season and playoffs) in his 136th appearance in the league. He’s the fastest to hit that milestone in league history, doing so 24 games faster than Bradley Wright-Phillips (160 games).
