MLS Preview: Los Angeles Galaxy (12-12-7) at San Jose Earthquakes (7-14-10)

The Galaxy won their last away match against the Earthquakes, a 3-1 victory in June 2021. LA hasn’t won consecutive away MLS Cali Clasico’s since 1997-83 (3 straight including a breakaway shootout).

The Earthquakes have lost only three home matches this season (W6 D6)and only two since an opening day defeat to the Red Bulls in February. Only conference leaders Philadelphia (0) and LAFC (1) have fewer home losses than the Earthquakes since March 1 (tied with Colorado and Portland).

The Galaxy ended a four-match winless run (D3 L1) with a 4-1 win over Colorado on Saturday. LA hasn’t recorded consecutive wins since beating Portland and LAFC in early April, failing to follow any of its last eight victories with another win (D4 L4).

Jeremy Ebobisse scored his 16th goal of the season in San Jose’s 1-1 draw with Dallas on Saturday. Ebobisse is the second player in Earthquake’s history to score 16 goals in a single season after Chris Wondolowski, who did so four times.

Riqui Puig assisted three of the Galaxy’s four goals on Saturday against Colorado., the first Galaxy player to record three assists in a single MLS match since Landon Donovan in 2014. Since his first start on August 28, Puig has recorded an MLS-high five assists.
