MLS Preview: Inter Miami FC (5-13-2) at D.C. United (8-9-5)

D. C. United has won four of its six meetings with Inter Miami FC, including a 2-1 victory in Fort Lauderdale on June 3 (D1 L1). All but one of the six all-time meetings, a 3-0 D. C. United win in May 2021, have been decided by one goal or drawn.

D.C. United attempted eight shots in its 1-0 victory over FC Dallas on Tuesday. It was the club’s fourth win while having 10 or fewer shots this season this season with only Nashville SC (6) having more such wins in MLS play in 2023.

Inter Miami FC is winless in nine league game (D2 L7) despite a late equalizer in a draw with Columbus Crew SC on Tuesday, the longest winless run in club history. Inter Miami FC has allowed at least one goal in 18 straight MLS matches, the longest such streak by any team this season.

Pedro Santos won all six tackles he attempted in D. C. United’s win on Tuesday as only Houston Dynamo FC’s Franco Escobar (7/7 vs. New York Red Bulls in April) has attempted more in a match with a 100% success rate this season. He is the first D. C. United player to attempt six or more tackles in a match and win all of them since Junior Moreno (6/6) against New York City FC in March 2019.

Josef Martinez scored a 90th-minute equalizer on Tuesday, his 104th regular-season MLS goal, equaling Dwayne De Rosario for ninth all-time. It was only the second time Martinez has scored a result-changing goal in the 90th minute or later in regular season play (90’+5 winner for Atlanta United FC vs San Jose Earthquakes in 2018).
