MLS Preview: Houston Dynamo FC (2-2-0) at San Jose Earthquakes (2-2-1)

In their last 12 encounters with the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo FC have won eight (D2 L2), including both of their 2022 contests. The Dynamo’s 2-1 victory over the Earthquakes in July 2016 was their first road victory since 2016, as they had never previously defeated San Jose twice in a row.

The San Jose Earthquakes are unbeaten (W3 D1) in their last four home games, including Saturday’s draw with Toronto FC. Since losing to the New York Red Bulls on the first day of the season last season, San Jose has lost multiple times in 20 home matches in all rivalries (W10 D7), however one of those was because of the Houston Dynamo FC.

On Saturday, the Houston Dynamo FC defeated New York City FC 1-0 to follow up their March 18 2-0 victory over Austin FC. Since March 8-15, 2014, Houston hadn’t won consecutively by a score of zero or less during a regular season.

Saturday marked the third time this season that San Jose Earthquakes have held Toronto FC to an expected goals value of less than 1.0 in a match. Two of Houston Dynamo FC’s four goals in 2023 have come from the penalty spot, including Simone Bassi’s winner on Saturday. The Earthquakes held opponents to under 1.0 expected goals just twice throughout the entire 2022 season. Starting from the beginning of the 2021 season, the Dynamo have changed over 11 of their 12 punishment endeavors in MLS play (92%), second best among groups with something like 10 punishments in that time (Philadelphia Union 14/15 – 93%).
