MLS Preview: D. C. United (9-13-10) at Austin FC (9-14-8)

Austin FC defeated D. C. United, 3-2, in the only previous meeting between the sides in April 2022, despite trailing, 2-0, entering the 80th minute. It remains the only time a team won a match in which it trailed by multiple goals in the 79th minute or later since the start of the 2019 MLS season.

Austin FC’s club-record winless run in all competitions extended to 10 games with a 1-0 loss at the Colorado Rapids on Saturday (D3 L7). Austin FC is the only MLS team without a win all competitions since the beginning of the Leagues Cup on July 21.

D. C. United’s 2-2 draw at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday was the eighth time its avoided defeat in 16 away matches this year (W4 D4 L8). D. C. United has avoided defeat in more than half of its away matches over a full season just once since 2017, losing six of 17 away from home in 2019.

Will Bruin has scored 11 goals in 17 MLS matches against D. C. United (including playoffs), more than against any other team in his career. Only Bradley Wright-Phillips (12) has scored more goals against D. C. United since Bruin joined MLS in 2011.

Christian Benteke’s goal against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday was his sixth goal of September. Benteke is the first D. C. United player to score at least six goals in a single month since Luciano Emilio scored seven times in June 2008.
