MLS Preview: D.C. United (6-16-4) at Atlanta United FC (7-10-9)

Atlanta United has won five of its last six matches against D.C. United (L1) including a 1-0 away win on April 2. None of the 13 all-time MLS meetings between the sides have ended in a draw (Atlanta W7, D.C. W6). Only Dallas vs. Tampa Bay (18) has been played more often without ever drawing in MLS history.

Atlanta United has just four wins in its 21 MLS matches (D8 L9) since beating D.C. United on April 2. The four wins in that time are tied with D.C. for fewest in MLS while only Houston (18) and D.C. (16) have fewer points than the Five Stripes (20) in that span.

D.C. United’s 6-0 loss to the Union on Saturday was the third time its lost by at least six goals in the club’s history, also doing so against the Union in July (0-7) and New York City FC in October 2021 (6-0), making it three six-goal losses in D.C.’s last 30 MLS matches. None of D.C.’s first 865 MLS matches (including playoffs)were lost by six-plus goals.

Josef Martinez has scored seven goals against D.C. United in his MLS career, with six of those coming at homes. Since his first home game against D.C. in March 2018, no player has scored more home goals against a single opponent than Martinez has against D.C. (tied with 3 others).

D.C. United has failed to scored in five straight MLS matches for the second time in club history, also doing so in July-August 2002. the last team to go six straight games without a goal in a single season was Chivas USA in July-August 2014.
