MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (8-11-9) at Portland Timbers (9-8-12)

Atlanta United is unbeaten in four meetings with the Timbers in MLS play (W2 D2, including the 2018 MLS Cup Final). Atlanta is the only team the Timbers have faced multiple times in MLS play without a win.

Portland defeated Austin FC, 2-1, on Wednesday despite having just 29.1 percent possession in the match. It was the third time the Timbers have finished with less than 30 percent possession in an MLS match with the team securing a victory on all three occasions (2018 vs. NYC and 2016 vs. SKC).

Atlanta United followed its 3-2 win over D.C. on Sunday with a 4-1 loss to the Union on Wednesday. Atlanta has not won consecutive MLS matches since last September, posting a record of D6 L7 following their last 13 MLS wins .

Bill Tuiloma scored his fifth headed goal of the season in Portland’s win over Austin on Wednesday as only Brandon Vazquez (6) has more this season. Only Felipe Mora (6 last season) has scored more headed goals in a single season in Timbers history.

Andrew Gutman scored Atlanta’s lone goal against the Union on Wednesday, his third goal in his last six MLS matches. Gutman has scored more in those six matches than he had in his first 65 MLS games (2, including playoffs).
