MLB Preview: New York Mets (20-21) at Washington Nationals (17-23)

NEW YORK METS NOTES:

METSCELLANEOUS: The Mets lost in the resumption of game one and defeated the Nationals in yesterday’s regularly schedule contest…The Mets have won three of their last five games… New York continues a seven-game road trip (3-3) to Cincinnati (1-2) and Washington D.C. (2-1)…Following this series, the Mets head home for a six-game homestand against Tampa Bay (three games) and Cleveland (three games).

PATRIOTIC PETERSON: David Peterson owns a 2-0 record with a 2.93 ERA (9 ER/27.2 IP) with 11 walks and 20 strikeouts in six games (five starts) against the Nationals…He has made two career starts in Washington D.C. and is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA (2 ER/11.2 IP) with four walks with 10 strikeouts.

WHAT A RELIEF: The Mets bullpen has held opponents to a .216 (122-565) batting average this season…That is the second-lowest mark in the majors and the lowest in the National League… They have allowed only 39 extra-base hits this year, which is the second-lowest in the majors.

WE FOUND NIMMO: Brandon Nimmo is batting .347 (35-101) with 12 runs, seven doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI, 11 walks with a .410 OBP and a .475 SLG in 26 games on the road this year… His .347 average is seventh in the majors and fifth in the Senior Circuit.

TO THE LEFT, TO THE LEFT: Brandon Nimmo is batting .333 (18- 54) with six doubles and five walks against left-handed pitchers this year…Brett Baty is hitting .278 (5-18) with a double, a home run and a walk against southpaws in 2023…Overall, the Mets are 6-10 when a left-handed pitcher starts this season.

PETE IN D.C.: Pete Alonso is a lifetime .331 (47-142) hitter with 25 runs, nine doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 29 RBI, 19 walks with a .418 OBP a .662 SLG in 38 career games in Washington D.C…Alonso has 22 career home runs vs. Washington, fifth-most among active players…His 1.080 OPS against the Nats is the second-best among active players.

30 FOR 30: Francisco Lindor has recorded 31 RBI, while Pete Alonso has collected 31 RBI this year…They are one of two pairs of teammates to record 30 or more RBI this year…They join Adolis Garcia (42), Marcus Semien (34) and Jonah Heim (30) of the Rangers as the only other teammates with 30+ RBI this year.

WASHINGTON D.C., IT’S PARADISE TO ME: Mark Canha has hit .444 (16-36) with eight runs, three doubles, one home run, seven RBI and three walks in nine games at the ballpark…Jeff McNeil has slashed .316/.371/.478 with 16 runs, six doubles, two triples, four home runs, 21 RBI and 12 walks in 36 contests in the district…Brandon Nimmo has slashed .312/.426/.416 with 25 runs, eight doubles, a triple, two home runs, nine RBI and 30 walks in 46 games at the home of the Nationals.

AND THEY’RE OFF: Starling Marte is tied for 13th in the majors and tied for sixth in the NL with 10 steals…He ranks third among active players with 324 career steals…Only Elvis Andrus (340) and Billy Hamilton (326) have more…The Mets are sixth in the National League with a 81.8% success rate in steals this season…The ets are eighth the NL with 27 steals this season.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Mets have been outscored 36-9 in the first inning this year…The Mets are 7-18 when their opponent scores first…On the other hand, the Mets are 13-2 when scoring first this season…Their .867 winning percentage when scoring first ranks second in the majors.

BRIGHAM OUT, BRIGHAM OUT: Jeff Brigham has not allowed a run in his last six appearances….He has allowed two hits, a walk and struck out six in those 6.0 innings…Overall, Brigham has not allowed a run in 10 of his 12 appearances this season, posting a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP)…He has struck out 16 and allowed six hits and four walks in 13.0 innings this year.

A THOUSAND MILES: On Friday, David Robertson recorded his 1,000th career strikeout…He has 1,001 career strikeouts, recording 1,000 in relief and one as a starter as an opener in 2021 as a member of the Rays…He became the 14th pitcher in MLB history to record 1,000 strikeouts solely in relief.

DOCTOR ROBERT-SON: David Robertson has appeared in 15 games and has allowed one run in 15.1 innings of work, good for a 0.53 ERA…He has allowed eight hits, five walks while striking out 24 in that span…He is holding left-handed hitters to a .133 (4-30) batting average this season…He has converted all eight save opportunities he’s had this season…Overall, he has recorded 164 saves in his career…That is the seventh-most among active players.

STARTING PITCHING: Mets starting pitchers have tossed 197.2 innings this year, the fourth-fewest innings in the majors…They have surrendered 37 homers, the fifth-most in the majors…New York starters have issued 99 walks, the most in the majors…They are 14-16 with a 5.19 ERA (114 earned runs/197.2 innings).

THE EAST IS A BEAST: The Mets are 9-7 against the division this year…The team went 50-26 against the East in 2022…Their .658 winning percentage against the East was the best mark in club history.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: New York will play their 27th road game today, the most in the major leagues…New York is 12-12 on the road this season…They are 3-3-1 in road series in 2023.

A HIT’S A HIT: The Mets have collected 45 infield hits this season, which is the second-most in the majors…Last year, the Mets collected 186 infield hits, the fifth-most in franchise history and the third-most in MLB in 2022.

D-FENCE: The Mets have committed only 13 errors through 41 games this season….Their 13 errors are tied for the second-fewest in the majors…Only the Padres (14) have committed fewer…The team’s .991 fielding percentage is third in the majors.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Peterson has a 4.97 ERA (42 ER/76.0 IP) in his last 18 road outings since the 2022 season, including 14 starts…He is 6-12 with a 5.30 ERA (84 earned runs/142.2 innings) in his career on the road…Peterson struck our five or more batters in 12 starts straight road starts from May 23, 2022 – April 22, 2023, setting a franchise record for a left-handed pitcher…The streak came to an end in his last start on May 9 at Great American Ballpark when he struck out four Reds batters.

LETHAL LEFTY: Peterson has limited lefties to a .220 (27-123) average since 2022…He whiffed 32 of the 96 left-handed batters he faced last year, a 33 percent strikeout rate that ranked fourth among all left-handed pitchers to face a minimum of 90 LHB in 2022.

SLIP ‘N’ SLIDE: Peterson held batters to a .175 (24-137) average with his slider last season and 78 of his 126 strikeouts came on the pitch…His 52.0 slider-strikeout percentage was the second-highest in MLB (min. 150 PA) behind only teammate Edwin Díaz (54.7) and his 47.9 whiff percentage with the pitch was the third-highest in the majors behind only Díaz (54.7) and Seattle’s Andres Muñoz (50.8).

FOUR-HIT WONDER: The southpaw allowed four hits or fewer in 12 of his 19 starts and 21 of his 28 appearances overall last season…He has held the opposition to four hits or fewer in 39 of his 54 career games.

STRIKE ‘EM OUT, STRIKE ‘EM OUT: Peterson struck out at least five batters in 11 straight starts from June 20-September 9 last season, the second-longest streak by a left-handed starter last season…It was the sixth-longest streak by a Mets left-handed starter in franchise history…Peterson had 82 strikeouts across 58.2 innings during that span (13 G/11 GS) good for a 12.58 K/9 ratio.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS NOTES:

MONDAY MATINEE
The Washington Nationals close out this four-game series against the New York Mets on Monday afternoon…Following the game, Washington will travel to Miami for a three-game series before returning to D.C. for a six-game homestand against Detroit and San Diego starting on Friday.

ROSTER MOVE
The Nationals returned from rehab and reinstated outfielder Corey Dickerson from the 10-day Injured List and optioned infielder/outfielder Jake Alu to Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

  • Dickerson saw action in two games before this season before he was placed on the Injured List with a left calf strain on April 2.

STATUS CHECK
After splitting two games on Sunday, the Nationals have won four of seven, seven of 12 and eight of 14 games…They are 12-10 (.545) dating to April 21 at Minnesota…The Nationals have won four of their last six series.

  • Washington is 16-17 (.485) after losing six of seven games to start the season…That stretch included series against the Atlanta Braves (1-2) and Tampa Bay Rays (0-3) as well as a 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies on their Opening Day.

CJ Abrams plated two separate go-ahead RBI in Washington’s 3-2 win over New York on Sunday…His solo homer in the seventh inning proved to be the game winner.

  • All told, he leads the Nationals and is third among NL shortstops with 21 RBI this season.

LEFT IS RIGHT
The Nationals rank third among Major League clubs in batting average (.297) and fourth in on-base percentage (.360) against left-handed pitching this season.

  • Luis García ranks second among MLB left-handed hitters (behind Anthony Rizzo, .385) with a .379 batting average against lefties…His .379 average is seventh among all NL hitters.
  • Dominic Smith is 13th among National League left-handed hitters with a .282 average against lefthanded pitchers.
  • Lane Thomas is tied for tenth in the National League with 14 hits against lefties.

Left-handed pitcher signed a six-year contract with the Nationals on Dec. 7, 2018…Was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series…Is a two-time National League All-Star (2018, 2013)… Has started at least 30 games for five consecutive full seasons (2017-19, 2021-22), joining Gerrit Cole as the only pitchers since 2017 to accomplish the feat.

LAST START
Allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings on May 9 at San Francisco…He did not walk a batter for the second consecutive start.

vs. NEW YORK (NL)
Faces the Mets for the first time this season…Since joining the Nationals in 2019, Corbin is 3-3 with a 3.40 ERA in nine career starts against the Mets at Nationals Park…In his final start against them in 2022, Corbin tossed 7.0 innings of three-hit, one-run ball with five strikeouts and one walk on Sept. 3, 2022 at Citi Field.

RECENCY BIAS

Put together his best start of the season on May 4 vs. Chicago (NL)…He allowed two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings…It was the longest outing by a Nationals pitcher at that point of the season…He took a no decision but the Nationals won the game, 4-3.

THE SLIDE PIECE
Corbin’s signature slider has induced 47 swings and misses, the third-most of any left-handed pitcher behind Clayton Kershaw (74) and Reid Detmers (56).

CAREFUL OVER THERE
Corbin is tied for third in Major League Baseball with two pickoffs already this year…He picked off three runners each of the past two seasons (2021-22) and his career-high for pickoffs in a season is four in 2019.

APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT, FELLAS
Since joining the Nationals in 2019, Corbin is 27-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 35 starts when he throws at least 6.0 innings and receives at least three runs of support… The Nationals are 32-3 in those games.
