MLB Preview: Detroit Tigers (63-75) at New York Yankees (69-69)

DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:

TIGERS DROP SERIES OPENER TO YANKEES: The Tigers had their four-game winning streak snapped last night, losing to the Yankees, 5-1. Javier Báez had three hits in the game, while Kerry Carpenter added two hits, including a triple. Miguel Cabrera went 1×3 and drove in Detroit’s only run of the game. Alex Faedo started for the Tigers, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Will Vest pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief with two strikeouts, while Miguel Díaz punched out two in a shutout inning.

KEEP CALM AND KERRY ON: Kerry Carpenter had a pair of hits, including a triple, in last night’s game. Carpenter has hit safely in 26 of his last 30 games, over which he is batting .369/.426/.676 with five doubles,one triple, nine home runs and 21 RBI. Among qualified American League hitters since August 4, Carpenter ranks fourth in batting average and slugging percentage, while he is fifth in OPS (1.102), tied for sixth in home runs and seventh in on-base percentage.

JAV MERCY: Javier Báez went 3×4 last night, recording his fifth three-hit game of the season and the 57th of his career. With the performance, Báez continued his success in his career against the Yankees, slashing .348/.362/.543 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 12 games.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Miguel Cabrera drove in Detroit’s only run of the game last night, hitting a game-tying RBI single in the sixth inning. Cabrera has driven in seven runs over his last six games and has hit safely in six of his last seven contests. With his hit last night, Cabrera now has 3,159 in his career, seven shy of tying Adrián Beltré (3,166) for 16th in MLB history.

ON THE ROAD: The Tigers are 3-1 on their current six-game road trip, which includes three games at Chicago (AL) (3-0) and three games at New York (AL) (0-1). Detroit is 34-35 away from Comerica Park this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .229/.296/.377 on the road, while the pitching staff has a 4.06 ERA (596.2IP/269ER).

TIGERS AND YANKEES: The Tigers and Yankees continue their second and final series of the season tonight. The Yankees have won four of the first five meetings against Detroit this season. With last night’s win, New York (AL) clinched the season series for the second straight year.

TONIGHT’S TIGERS STARTING PITCHER

25 Matt Manning • 5-4, 3.62 ERA (77.0IP/31ER)

  • Manning will make his 15th start of the season tonight against the Yankees. Did not factor into the decision in his last start on Thursday vs. New York (AL), throwing 6.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts…marked the second straight start and the sixth time in his career that he has thrown at least 6.0 innings and not allowed an earned run…has surrendered just one earned run over his last four starts, posting a 0.38 ERA (23.2IP/1ER) with 10 hits allowed in that span. His start on Thursday marked his first career appearance against the Yankees…will be making his first career outing at Yankee Stadium tonight. Was the Tigers starting pitcher for the first combined no-hitter in franchise history on July 8 vs. Toronto, tossing 6.2 innings with three walks and five strikeouts…marked his fourth career start with at least 6.0 shutout innings. Returned to the active roster on June 27 at Texas, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings…had been sidelined since April 12 with a right foot fracture.

NEW YORK YANKEES NOTES:

AT A GLANCE: The Yankees continue a six-game homestand tonight with the second game of a three-game set vs. Detroit (1-0 thus far)…will also face Milwaukee this weekend (Fri.-Sun.)… went 7-3 on their recent 10-game road trip, going 1-2 at Tampa Bay, 3-1 at Detroit and sweeping a three-game set at Houston. Have won four straight games and seven of their last eight games…are 9-4 in their last 13 games (since 8/23) after losing their previous nine from 8/12-22. Are .500 for the first time since 8/15 (60-60).  Have won each of their last two completed series after losing their previous six series.

PEN PALS: Yankees relievers tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief on Tuesday…have not allowed a run in their last 16.0 innings over their last four games (since 9/1) and have not allowed an earned run in their last 24.0 innings over their last six games (since 8/30). Yankees relievers have posted a Major League-best 3.16
ERA this season…are one of only two bullpens in the Majors to record an ERA under 3.50 (also Atlanta-3.48). Also lead the Majors with a .214 opponents’ BA and 1.19
WHIP…rank second in the Majors in HR/9.0IP (0.85).

PITCH PERFECT: Yankees pitchers own a 3.93 ERA this season, the fourth-lowest ERA in the AL and the sixth-lowest in the Majors…also rank second in the Majors in opponents’ BA (.232, first in AL) and fifth in WHIP (1.23, fourth in AL).

GLEYBER DAY: INF Gleyber Torres hit a two-run double in the eighth inning on Tuesday…has 7RBI in his last six games (since 8/28) and 10RBI in his last 10 games since 8/24). 11 of his last 17 hits have gone for extra bases (5 doubles, 6HR). Is batting .330/.408/.617 (38-for-115) with 19R, 9 doubles, 8HR, 16RBI, 13BB, 2HP and 5SB in 30 games since 8/1…has hit safely in 22 of those games and has reached base safely in 25 of those contests. WHAT A RELIEF: RHP Jonathan Loáisiga has retired 37-of43BF over 12 appearances since returning from the injured list on 8/7…has held opponents to a .098 BA (4-for-41) with 1BB/1IBB and 1HP over 12.2 innings during that stretch.

MATCHING UP: The Yankees have won nine of their last 11 games vs. Detroit (since 2022) and are 14-5 in their last 19 games against the Tigers (since 9/12/19-G1).

OUT OF THIS WORLD: OF Jasson Domínguez has hit safely in each of his first four career games…is just the fourth Yankee in the last 43 years (since 1981) to hit safely in each of his first four career games (also Estevan Florial from 2020-21, Hideki Matsui in 2003 and Oscar Azocar in 1990)…if he were to record a hit tonight, he would be just the third Yankee in the last 43 years (since 1981) to hit safely in each of his first five career games (also Matsui in 2003 and Azocar in 1990). STANTON ISLAND: DH/OF Giancarlo Stanton hit his 400th career home run on Tuesday with a go-ahead two-run HR in the sixth inning…accomplished the feat in his 1,520th career game, becoming the fourth-fastest in Major League history to reach 400 career home runs, trailing only Mark McGwire (1,412 games), Babe Ruth (1,475 games) and Alex Rodriguez (1,489 games)…became the 58th player in Major League history to reach the milestone and the 10th player to accomplish the feat as a Yankee (also Teixeira, Beltrán, A. Soriano, Rodriguez, Sheffield, Jackson, Mantle, Gehrig and Ruth)…is one of just three active players to reach 400HR, joining Miguel Cabrera (510HR) and Nelson Cruz (464HR). Has 3HR in his last five games (since 8/30) and 4HR in his last 10 games (since 8/24).

LEMACHINE: INF DJ LeMahieu hit his second leadoff HR of the season on Tuesday vs. Detroit (also 9/1 at Houston) and the third leadoff HR by a Yankee this season (also Anthony Volpe on 4/14 vs. Minnesota)…marked his 17th career leadoff HR and 15th as a Yankee…his 15 leadoff home runs are tied with Brett Gardner and Chuck Knoblauch for the fifth-most in franchise history, trailing only Derek Jeter (29HR), Rickey Henderson (24HR), Alfonso Soriano (21HR) and Hank Bauer (18HR).
