DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:
TIGERS COMPLETE SWEEP OF WHITE SOX WITH 3-2 WIN: The Tigers posted their 30th comeback win of the season on Sunday, defeating the White Sox, 3-2, to complete a three-game sweep. Spencer Torkelson had the big blow with a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning, his 25th of the season. Carson Kelly drove in a pair of runs and went 1×4 with a double. Tarik Skubal started for Detroit and earned his fourth win of the season, giving up two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Jason Foley and Alex Lange each worked a scoreless inning in relief with Lange notching his 21st save of the year.
TORK TIME: Spencer Torkelson was the hero in Sunday’s victory, hitting a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning. The homer traveled 436 feet, tied for the second longest of his career, only trailing a 440-foot blast on June 12 vs. Atlanta. Since June 27, Torkelson has hit 17 homers, which ranks third in the American League.
START ME UP: Tarik Skubal threw 7.0 strong innings on Sunday, giving up two runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. It marked the fourth straight game where a Tigers starter has thrown 6.0-or-more innings and allowed two-or-fewer runs, the longest in-season streak since another four-game stretch from August 1-4, 2014.
MIGGY MAGIC: Miguel Cabrera recorded his first four-hit game of the season and the 49th of his career on Saturday against the White Sox, finishing the game 4×5 with a double and three RBI. It marked Cabrera’s first four-hit game since September 8, 2021 at Pittsburgh. He became the second Tigers player age 40-or-older to have a four-hit game, joining Chuck Hostetler on June 18, 1944 (Game 1) vs. St. Louis. With four hits on Saturday, Cabrera now has 3,158 in his career, breaking a tie with George Brett for sole possession of 17th place on the all-time hits list.
ON THE ROAD: The Tigers are 3-0 on their current six-game road trip, which includes three games at Chicago (AL) (3-0) and three games at New York (AL) (September 5-7). Detroit is 34-34 away from Comerica Park this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .228/.297/.378 on the road, while the pitching staff has a 4.04 ERA (588.2IP/264ER).
TIGERS AND YANKEES: The Tigers and Yankees begin their second and final series of the season tonight. The two teams met last week in Detroit with New York (AL) winning three of the four games. In 2022, the Tigers went 1-5 against the Yankees, including dropping all three games at Yankee Stadium.
INJURY REHAB UPDATE: Mason Englert continued an injury rehab assignment with Triple A Toledo on Sunday, allowing a run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout in 1.0 inning. Englert has been sidelined since July 24 with left hip tightness.
