MLB Preview: Cleveland Guardians (19-21) at Chicago White Sox (14-28)

WHITE SOX AT A GLANCE
The Chicago White Sox have lost four of their last five games, six of nine and 17 of 24 as they continue a nine-game, 10-day homestand tonight with the series opener vs. Cleveland.

RHP Lance Lynn, who has allowed four-plus earned runs in each of his last five starts, is scheduled to start for Chicago.

The White Sox opened the homestand losing two of three to Houston, including a 4-3 setback in Sunday’s series-deciding contest … the Sox held on for a 3-1 win on Saturday night after the Astros won Friday’s opener, 5-1, following a 2:10 rain delay.

Following this series vs. the Guardians, Chicago will conclude the homestand vs. Kansas City (5/19-21) before taking a seven-game trip to Cleveland (5/22-24) and Detroit (5/25-28).

The Sox went 3-4 on their last trip at Cincinnati (2-1) and Kansas City (1-3) from 5/5-11 and 3-4 on their last homestand vs. Tampa Bay (1-3) and Minnesota (2-1) from 4/27-5/4.

TONIGHT’S STORYLINES
Chicago is a season-high tying 14 games under .500.

White Sox starters own a 5.81 ERA (37 ER/57.1 IP), .267 opp. average, 12 home runs and 54 strikeouts in the last 10 games.

The Sox have not won a series over the Guardians since taking three of fi ve from 9/23-26/21 … they are 19-29 vs. Cleveland since the start of 2020, including 9-13 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Lance Lynn owns a 2.25 ERA (6 ER/24.0 IP) with 21 strikeouts over his last four starts (three QS) vs. Cleveland.

Luis Robert Jr. has hit safely in 12 of 13 games in May, going 19-45 (.422) with five doubles, six home runs, 14 RBI, five walks, six multi-hit eff orts and a 1.443 OPS.

Robert Jr. has homered in career-long three straight games … the last White Sox to homer in four straight was Matt Davidson from 6/12-15/17 (four homers total).

ROSTER MOVES
The White Sox returned LHP Garrett Crochet from his rehab assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list, and optioned RHP Nick Padilla to Charlotte. Crochet made six rehab appearances after starting 2023 on the IL to continue recovery from Tommy John surgery … he has not pitched in a regular season game with the Sox since 10/1/21.

LUIS DIGS THE LONG BALL
Luis Robert Jr. is tied for the American League lead in homers (11) and ranks among MLB leaders in average homer distance (5th, 406 ft.) and EV (5th, 107.2 mph) in 2023 … min. 10 HRs.

Eight of his 11 home runs have gone at least 400 feet, tied with Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson for the most in MLB. His maximum values this season are 430 feet on 5/9/23 at Kansas City (off Jordan Lyles), and a 113.6 mph exit velocity on 5/14 vs. Houston off Hunter Brown).

Robert Jr. is averaging 412 feet and a 107.6 mph exit velocity on his 47 career home runs … both numbers lead the White Sox since the start of the 2020 season (minimum 10 home runs).

HOORAY FOR MAY
Luis Robert Jr. is hitting .422/.509/.933 (19-45) with five doubles, six homers (averaging 422 ft. and 109.4 mph EV), 14 RBI, 15 runs scored, five walks and a 1.443 OPS in 13 May games.

He ranks among MLB May leaders in average (1st), on-base percentage (1st), slugging percentage (1st), OPS (1st), runs scored (1st), total bases (1st, 42), home runs (T1st), extra-base hits (T1st, 11), hits (T2nd) and RBI (3rd).

By comparison, he hit .213/.254/.407 (23-108) with five homers, 13 RBI and a .662 OPS over 28 games in March/April.

The last White Sox to win American League Player of the Month honors was 1B José Abreu in August 2021.

WHITE SOX VS. CLEVELAND GUARDIANS
