Miami Marlins sign two-time All-Star infielder Jean Segura

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced the club has signed INF Jean Segura to a two-year deal, with a club option for a third year.

Segura, 32, played 98 games with the National League-champion Philadelphia Phillies last season, batting .277 with a .336 OBP and .723 OPS during the regular season. He also made his postseason debut in 2022, starting at second base in all 17 playoff games. He posted a .462 avg (6×13) with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored in the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves.

Segura, born in San Juan, Dominican Republic, is a career .285 hitter with 1,479 hits, 232 doubles, 205 stolen bases, and 492 RBI in 1,328 games played. Throughout his 11-year professional career, he has made at least 140 starts in six different seasons and has stolen at least 10 bases in eight different seasons. Segura has averaged 6.7 AB/SO (at-bat per strikeout ratio) during his career, the third-best mark since 2012 behind only Jose Altuve (7.4 AB/SO) and Albert Pujols (7.3 AB/SO) among players with at least 1,300 games played.

Defensively, he has played 911 games at shortstop, 399 at second base, and 24 at third base, boasting a career .974 fielding percentage. His .990 fielding percentage last year was the best single-season mark of his career.

An All-Star in both 2013 and 2018, Segura was also the NL hits leader in 2016 (203). He has appeared in games with five teams during his 11 Major League seasons: Angels (2012), Brewers (2012-15), Diamondbacks (2016), Mariners (2017-18), and the Phillies (2019-2022).

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Marlins have designated for assignment INF Charles Leblanc.
