Miami Marlins acquire RHP Cole Sulser and LHP Tanner Scott from Baltimore

MIAMI –The Miami Marlins today acquired LHP Tanner Scott and RHP Cole Sulser from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor league LHP Antonio Velez, OF Kevin Guerrero, a player to be named later and the Marlins’ 2022 Competitive Balance Round B Pick.

Scott, 27, went 5-4 with a 5.17 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 62 games (54.0 innings) for the Orioles in 2021. In parts of five seasons, the hard-throwing lefty from Warren, Ohio, is 9-8 with a 4.73 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 156.0 Major League innings.

Scott ranked third among left-handed relievers in whiff percentage (36.8%), trailing only Milwaukee’s Josh Hader and New York-AL’s Aroldis Chapman. He also ranked sixth in Major League baseball among lefties in average fastball velocity (97 mph) in 2021. Scott was selected by Baltimore in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Howard College.

Sulser, 32, pitched in 60 games for the Orioles in 2021. He finished the season 5-4 with a 2.70 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 63.1 innings, making him one of 23 right-handed relievers to pitch in more than 60 innings, strikeout at least 60 hitters and maintain an ERA under 3.00 last season, joining new teammate RHP Dylan Floro on the list.

In parts of three Major League seasons in Tampa Bay (2019) and Baltimore (2020-21), the righty from Santa Ysabel, Calif., is 6-9 with a 3.18 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 86 games. Sulser was a 25th round pick by Cleveland in the 2013 MLB Draft from Dartmouth College.

In corresponding moves, the Marlins designated RHP Nick Neidert for assignment and placed LHP Sean Guenther on the 60-day Injured List.
