BOSTON – The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has launched a statewide public awareness campaign aimed at educating residents about legal gambling options and warning them about the risks of using unregulated or illegal betting platforms.
The campaign, titled “Safer Bets Start Here,” highlights the consumer protections required of licensed operators and cautions that illegal gambling sites often lack safeguards for personal data, financial security and responsible gaming.
“The Massachusetts Gaming Commission requires legal operators to prioritize consumer protections and responsible gaming, employ technology that prevents underage access, and ensure data and funds are secured,” Commissioner Eileen O’Brien said in a statement. “Illegal operators put your data and funds at greater risk. This awareness campaign is intended to inform Massachusetts residents about the legal options to wager if they choose to gamble.”
Commissioner Nakisha Skinner said regulated operators offer a safer environment for those who choose to bet.
“Gambling inherently involves risk, but if you choose to bet, using a regulated operator can reduce that risk by ensuring your money is secure and your bet is backed up by the Commission’s regulatory structure,” Skinner said. “You can also learn more about safer gambling by visiting a PlayWell Hub or the PlayWell website.”
The campaign also promotes PlayWell, the Commission’s responsible gaming and player‑health program launched in March 2026. PlayWell provides in‑person support at all three Massachusetts casinos, as well as online and phone‑based resources.
PlayWell advisors are trained to help patrons understand game rules and odds, set budgets through the PlayMyWay tool, enroll in the voluntary self‑exclusion program, and connect individuals with clinical support services when needed.
