HOUSTON – The Houston Dash have added MLS Cup-winning goalkeeper Matt Lampson to the technical staff as the team’s new goalkeeper coach, the team announced today.
Lampson will join the team for Houston’s upcoming trip to Kentucky to take on Racing Louisville FC on May 14. Prior to joining the Dash, Lampson was a volunteer assistant goalkeeper coach at his alma mater Ohio State as well as Ohio Dominican University.
Lampson played for 10 years in Major League Soccer, helping the Columbus Crew to an MLS Cup championship in 2020. He made 61 appearances with 16 clean sheets for the Chicago Fire, Minnesota United, LA Galaxy and the Crew.
Lampson was also named the MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year three times during his playing career. A cancer survivor, he founded the LampStrong Foundation in 2014 which aims to provide difference-making financial, emotional and motivational support to cancer patients and families in all the stages of cancer treatment and recovery and to fund proven cancer researchers.
The 32-year-old starred at Ohio State in goal for the Buckeyes from 2009-2011. As a freshman, Lampson was named the co-freshman of the year and was an All-Big Ten first team selection as a sophomore in 2010. At the end of his junior season, Lampson turned pro and signed a contract with the Crew to become the second homegrown player in club history.
Lampson takes the place of Brenton Saylor, who departed the team in early April.
