The Guardians today claimed C Christian Bethancourt from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Bethancourt, 32, spent the 2023 season with the Tampa Bay Rays, batting .225 (71-for-315) with 49 runs, 16 2B, 11 HR & 33 RBI in 104 games as the Rays primary backstop (.254/.381/.635). He made 89 starts for the Rays and tossed out 23% of the would-be basestealers (13-for-57). The Panama City, Panama native owns a 7-year Major League batting average of .231 (255-for-1102) with 53 2B, 30 HR & 113 RBI in 365 games with Atlanta, San Diego, Oakland and Tampa Bay, debuting with the Braves in 2013 and spending 2019 in Korea.
The 40-player roster is currently at 40 with RHP Tanner Bibee still residing on the 60-day IL.
