SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Giants and left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers agreed to terms on a three-year Major League contract worth $33 million. Rogers will make $9 million in 2023 and $12
million in both 2024 and 2025. Additionally, Rogers will make a donation to the Giants Community Fund of $45,000 in 2023 as well as $60,000 in both 2024 and 2025.
Rogers, 32, the twin brother of current Giants right-handed pitcher Tyler Rogers, was 4-8 with 31 saves and a 4.76 ERA in 66 combined games last season between San Diego (42 games) and Milwaukee (24 games). Rogers struck out 84 batters in 64.1 innings last season for a 11.8 K/9ip ratio, the highest of his career over a full season. He limited left-handed batters to a .167 (10-for-60)
average last season while only allowing three extra-base hits to lefties (one double, two triples) and a .511 OPS.
Earlier this year on April 11 vs. San Diego, Taylor and Tyler both pitched in the game (Taylor for San Diego and Tyler for the Giants). It marked the second time in MLB history that two twin
brothers pitched in the same game and the first time it was done for opposing teams. The only other time it happened prior to that was July 31, 1956 when Johnny and Eddie O’Brien, primarily position
players for their careers, both pitched for Pittsburgh. According to Elias, this is the first time that a set of twins will be teammates since Jose and Ozzie Canseco both played for Oakland in 1990.
Overall, it’s the fourth time that a set of twin brothers have been teammates in Major League history joining the aforementioned Canseco brothers, Eddie and Johnny O’Brien for the Pirates in
1953 and 1955-58 and Joe and Red Shannon for Boston in 1915.
In 2021, Taylor Rogers was an All-Star with the Twins, posting a 3.35 ERA and nine saves in 40 games while amassing 59 strikeouts in 40.1 innings.
In seven Major League seasons, Rogers is 21-26 with a 3.42 ERA and 81 saves in 385 career games between the Twins (2016-2021), Padres (2022) and Brewers (2022). His 385 games since 2016 (his
first year in the Majors) are 13ᵗʰ-most in the Majors among all relievers and are third-most among left-handed relievers in that time. Only Brad Hand (429 games) and Andrew Chafin (407 games) have
appeared in more games since 2016 than Rogers.
To make room for Rogers on the 40-man roster, the Giants have designated IF Tommy La Stella for assignment.
