Dodgers select Dylan Covey

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey and optioned left-handed pitcher Justin Bruihl. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Jimmy Nelson to the 60-day injured list.

Covey, 31, was 1-0 with 4.22 ERA (15 ER/32.0 IP) and 28 strikeouts in seven games (six starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Southern California native has been in the Major Leagues parts of four seasons with Chicago-AL (2017-19) and Boston (2020) and he is a combined 6-29 with a 6.57 ERA (193 ER/267.1 IP) and 184 strikeouts in 71 games (45 starts). He made three appearances (one start) for the Dodgers during Spring Training, allowing two runs over 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts. He signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on January 30, 2023.

Bruihl, 25, pitched two innings, allowed two runs on three hits last night. In nine games this season, he has posted a 2.53 ERA (3 ER/10.2 IP) and 12 strikeouts. In 54 games (two starts) for the Dodgers, he is 1-1 with a 3.23 ERA (19 ER/53.0 IP) and 36 strikeouts while limiting left-handed hitters to a .192 (20-for-104) batting average against with 20 strikeouts. The southpaw was originally signed as non-drafted free agent on July 15, 2017 after finishing his collegiate career at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
