Cubs place INF Eric Sogard, RHP Kohl Stewart on 10-day I.L.; activate RHP Trevor Williams and recall INF Sergio Alcántara from Triple-A

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Eric Sogard (left thumb contusion) and right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart (right elbow inflammation) on the 10-day injured list. The team has activated Trevor Williams from the 10-day injured list and recalled infielder Sergio Alcántara from Triple-A Iowa.

 

Williams, 29, landed on the 10-day injured list on May 31 (retroactive to May 28) with appendicitis. In two injury rehab starts with Iowa, June 27-July 2, he went 1-0 and did not allow an earned run in 7.0 innings, walking one and striking out five.

 

Williams is 3-2 with a 5.36 ERA (26 ER/43.2 IP) in 10 starts for the Cubs after signing a one-year major league contract in February of this year. He has walked 20 and struck out 49 in 43.2 innings, compiling an average of 10.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. His last outing was on May 26 in Pittsburgh, in which he earned the 4-1 victory with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing one run, walking none and striking out seven batters.

 

Alcántara, 24, has hit .179 (12-for-67) with eight runs, three doubles, three triples, two home runs and four RBI in 30 games for the Cubs. First selected from Iowa, May 30, he was optioned back to Iowa, July 4. In 20 games with Iowa this season, Alcántara has hit .328 (20-for-61) with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and a .481 on-base percentage, drawing 18 walks compared to 16 strikeouts, to contribute to a .940 OPS.

 

Alcántara made his major league debut with the Tigers last season, appearing in 10 games and batting .143 (3-for-21) with a triple, home run and RBI while seeing time at both second base (six games) and third base (six games). He was claimed off waivers by Chicago, February 5 of this year prior to being outrighted, February 20.

 

Sogard, 35, is hitting .250 (40-for-160) with five doubles, one triple, one home runs and 11 RBI in 73 games for the Cubs this season.

 

Stewart, 26, is 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP) in four games (three starts) for Chicago this season. In six games (five starts) for Iowa, he is 2-3 with a 3.46 ERA (10 ER/26.0 IP), six walks and 26 strikeouts.
