The Chicago Cubs announced several roster moves ahead of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

  • Chris Flexen, a 30-year-old right-handed pitcher, has been promoted from Triple-A Iowa.
  • Tom Cosgrove, a left-handed pitcher, has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
  • Javier Assad, a right-handed pitcher, has been transferred to the 60-day injured list due to a left oblique strain.

Chris Flexen

Flexen has been dominant at Triple-A Iowa this season, boasting a 3-0 record with a 1.16 ERA across five starts (23.1 innings). His ERA leads all Triple-A pitchers with at least five starts, and he is the only starter in that category to remain undefeated while tying for the most wins. Among Iowa Cubs pitchers, Flexen ranks second in innings pitched and fourth in strikeouts (21).

A veteran of seven MLB seasons, Flexen has compiled a 30-49 record with a 4.95 ERA in 153 career games (110 starts). He has played for the Mets (2017-19), Mariners (2021-23), Rockies (2023), and White Sox (2024). Originally drafted by the Mets in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB Draft, the Newark, California native signed a minor league deal with the Cubs on February 18, 2025.

Tom Cosgrove

Cosgrove, 28, was recalled on April 27 and made one appearance for the Cubs, delivering two scoreless innings. He was acquired from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations on April 30.

Javier Assad

Assad, 27, was initially placed on the 15-day injured list on March 17 due to a left oblique strain. His move to the 60-day injured list provides additional roster flexibility for the Cubs.
