OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s reinstated designated hitter Mitch Moreland from the 10-day injured list and optioned outfielder Luis Barrera to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.
Moreland was placed on the IL May 18 retroactive to May 15 with an inflamed costochondral junction of his left rib. He was hitting .237 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 31 games at the time of the injury and had hit safely in each of his last five contests (6-for-18, .333). Moreland, who has started 23 games at designated hitter and five at first base, did not have a rehab assignment.
Barrera, who was recalled on May 18 when Moreland was placed on the IL, went 1-for-5 (.200) in four games in his Major League debut. He made one start in left field last Saturday at Los Angeles (AL) and singled off Aaron Slegers in the fourth inning for his first big league hit. Barrera is hitting .349 with two home runs and seven RBI in 11 games with Las Vegas.
