A’s Agree to Terms with Guerra, Kemp and Pinder

Tender Contracts to Remaining Players

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra and infielders/outfielders Tony Kemp and Chad Pinder on one-year contracts for the 2022 season, the club announced today. The A’s also tendered contracts to all remaining players on the 40-man roster.

Guerra made a career-high 53 relief appearances last year and was 4-1 with a 4.11 ERA and .218 opponents batting average in his first season with the A’s. He also had career highs in innings pitched (65.2), strikeouts (62) and wins (4). Guerra yielded a .217 average and .634 OPS against left-handed hitters compared to .219 with a .654 OPS against right-handers. First batters faced were 10-for-50 (.200) with two walks and a hit by pitch against him for a .245 on-base percentage.

Kemp had the best season of his six-year career last year as he batted a career-high .279 with a career-high tying eight home runs and a career-high 37 RBI in a career-high 131 games. He also walked a career-high 52 times, which fueled a career-high .382 on-base percentage. His on-base percentage was fourth best in the American League among players with players with at least 300 plate appearances. Kemp also had career highs in OPS (.800), slugging (.418), runs (54), hits (92), doubles (16), extra base hits (27) and sacrifice flies (5) and matched his best in hit by pitches (6).

Pinder batted .243 with six home runs and 27 RBI in 75 games in a season shortened by two stints on the injured list with a sprained left knee and a strained right hamstring. He started games at six different positions (29 in right field, 15 in left field, five at second base, four at third base, four at shortstop and one at designated hitter) and has now started games at at least six different positions in each of the last four full seasons. Pinder was 6-for-11 (.545) with a double, two home runs, nine RBI and three walks as a pinch hitter and tied for the lead among American League pinch hitters in home runs, RBI and extra base hits (3).
