trailing only the Orioles (.995), Braves (.994), Rays (.992) and Diamondbacks (.991)…Have gone 23-20 in their last 43 games since losing each of their first five games following the All-Star break.

GOOD AS GOLD: Ke’Bryan Hayes leads all MLB third basemen with 20 Defensive Runs Saved this season (the next closest player is Colorado’s Ryan McMahon with 17) according to the Fielding Bible…According to Baseball Savant, Hayes ranks third in all of MLB regardless of position with 14 Outs Above Average, while his 14 Outs Above Average as a third baseman are the most at that position in all of MLB (Kansas City’s Maikel Garcia is second with 12)…The Pirates have never had a third baseman take home a Rawlings Gold Glove Award.
THE JACKSON FIVE: Andre Jackson gets the start tonight after earning the first win of his big league career in his last outing Wednesday night at Kansas City…Jackson struck out each of the first five Royals batters that he faced Wednesday night, making him the first Pirates pitcher to strike out the first five hitters of a game since Bruce Kison also did so on June 28, 1979 vs. Montreal…According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that accounted for the only other instance a
Pirates pitcher has done that over the last 60 seasons.
EXTRA EXTRA: The Pirates had seven extra base hits in Monday night’s win against the Brewers…The Bucs have recorded 72 extra base hits since August 13…That’s the fifth-most in all of MLB behind the Phillies (90), Red Sox (83), Astros (82) and Mariners (82).
BE LIKE MIKE: Minor League Baseball announced today that Pittsburgh’s Michael Kennedy was named the Florida Complex League’s Pitcher-of-the-Month for August…Kennedy, who is rated by MLB Pipeline as Pittsburgh’s No. 13 prospect, had an 0.61 ERA in three games (one start) while allowing five hits in 14.2 innings last month for the FCL Pirates… The 18-year-old lefthander was selected by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Troy High School in Troy, New York.
CALL TO THE PEN: Pittsburgh’s bullpen has recorded a 2.76 ERA (32.2ip/10er) over the last seven games…During the seven-game span that began on August 27, the bullpen has the seventh-lowest ERA in all of MLB behind the Dodgers (1.77), Rays (2.13), Giants (2.15), Yankees (2.30), Astros (2.67) and Orioles (2.70).
LEGGING IT OUT: Ke’Bryan Hayes has tripled seven times this season, which are tied for the third-most by a Pirates third baseman since 1974 along with Bobby Bonilla (1988) and Phil Garner (1978)…According to StatsPerform, the only two Pirates third basemen to have more than seven triples since 1974 are Bobby Bonilla (nine in 1989) and Joe Randa (nine in 1997).
CUTCH CLOSING IN ON 300: Andrew McCutchen is just one home run shy of 300 in his career…The 36-year-old McCutchen ranks fourth all-time in Pirates history with 215 home runs…His next blast will make him one of 13 active players with at least 300 career home runs (Bryce Harper hit his 300th home run on August 30).
STAYING IN THE PARK: The Pirates have surrendered a total of 148 home runs this season… That’s the fourth-fewest in all of MLB behind the Cardinals (138), Braves 141) and Rays (145)… Since the beginning of last season, the Pirates have allowed 312 homers, which are the fifth-fewest in all of MLB (the Giants have surrendered a Major-League low 283 since the beginning of 2022).

ANDRE JACKSON: The 27-year-old righthander will make his seventh appearance (fourth start) with the Pirates after being promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis on 8/4…He was acquired by the Pirates from the Los Angeles Dodgers on 6/25 for cash considerations.
VS. MILWAUKEE: 0-0 with one save and a 3.00 ERA (6.0ip/2er) in two career appearances…He retired all six batters he faced in his Pirates debut on 8/5 at Milwaukee…He also recorded the first save of his big league career while pitching for the Dodgers on 10/3/21, allowing two runs in 3.0 innings in a 10-3 win at Dodger Stadium.
