BALTIMORE ORIOLES NOTES:
YESTERDAY’S NEWS: The Orioles fell to the Mariners last night, 13-1, to open the three-game series…Marks the most runs allowed this season and the 17 hits are tied for the most surrendered this year (3x, last: 5/31 vs. CLE)…The 12-run losing margin is also the largest of 2023…Anthony Santander hit his 12th home run of the season in the seventh inning…Josh Lester made his first professional pitching appearance and tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
HOME COOKING: The O’s began a nine-game, 10-day homestand with three games against Seattle last night…The Birds host Cincinnati from June 26-28 and Minnesota from June 30 to July 2 following an off day on June 29.
Baltimore has won five of the last seven games at Oriole Park since June 9 and has the fifth-best home record in MLB at 22-14 (.611).
AGAINST THE MARINERS: The Orioles and Mariners are meeting for the first time this season…Baltimore travels to Seattle from August 11-13…The M’s took four of six games last year, winning two of three at Oriole Park from May 31 to June 2 and at T-Mobile Park from June 27-29…The O’s are 9-19 (.321) against the Mariners since 2018, including 4-11 at Camden Yards during that time.

BROHEARN: Ryan O’Hearn has slashed .371/.397/.714 (26-for-70) with six doubles, six homers, 15 runs scored, 14 RBI, and three walks in his last 21 games (19 GS) since May 16… Among players with at least 70 plate appearances during that time, he ranks second in batting average and OPS (1.112) and third in slugging.
HAYS OF OUR LIVES: Austin Hays leads the AL and is third in MLB with a .323 batting average (see box at right)…He also ranks among AL leaders in doubles (T-4th, 21), slugging percentage (5th, .518), OPS (5th, .880), and hits (7th, 81)…Only one Oriole has ever won a batting title: Orioles Legend and Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who hit .316 in 1966…Hanser Alberto, who finished with a .305 batting average in 2019, is the only qualified Oriole in the last 14 seasons to finish the year with a batting average of at least .300.

YOUNG GUNN: Gunnar Henderson is slashing .345/.379/.709 (19-for-55) with two doubles, six homers, nine runs scored, 13 RBI, three walks, and two stolen bases in 15 June games (14 GS)…He ranks among AL leaders in home runs (T-2nd) and total bases (T-7th, 39) this month…Henderson homered in three straight games from June 10-13, becoming the first O’s rookie to do so since Ryan Mountcastle from June 2-5, 2021…He also scored a run in five consecutive games from June 8-13, one shy of his career high set earlier this year from April 11-16.
He earned his first AL Player of the Week honor for the week of June 5-11; he’s the first Oriole to win the award since Mountcastle in June 2021.
BIG TIME RUTSCH: Adley Rutschman is slashing .336/.427/.574 (41-for-122) with five doubles, eight home runs, 21 runs scored, 17 RBI, and 20 walks in 34 home games (33 GS) this season…He ranks third in the AL and tied for fifth in MLB with a 1.001 OPS at home… Eleven times in O’s history (since 1954) has a player finished with an OPS above 1.000 at home in a season, most recently done by Chris Davis (1.026) in 2015…Luke Scott (1.091) holds the team record in 2010.
Rutschman ranks second in the AL with 49 walks this season; he’s on pace to draw 107 base on balls, which would be tied for the fourth-most in team history; Ken Singleton holds the record with 118 walks in 1975.
He’s sixth in the AL with a .379 on-base percentage.
AY, TONE: Anthony Santander is tied for seventh in the AL with 20 doubles and 33 extra-base hits this season…He’s the first O’s player with 33 extra-base hits in his first 70 games of a season since Trey Mancini had 36 in his first 70 games of 2019.
Santander is tied for third among MLB switch hitters with 12 home runs this year.
ROSTER MOVES: The Orioles today reinstated Cedric Mullins from the 10-day Injured List and recalled Bruce Zimmermann from Triple-A Norfolk…In corresponding moves, Logan Gillaspie and Josh Lester were optioned to Norfolk…Mullins has been out since May 29 with a right groin strain.
