TORONTO BLUE JAYS NOTES:
THE LATEST: The Blue Jays led the Rangers, 6-0, in the 3rd inning on Sunday before surrendering eight straight runs and losing by an eventual 11-7 final score…Marked their largest blown lead (in a loss) since squandering a seven-run cushion on July 28, 2019 vs. TB…Dropped their third straight series, moving to 13-10-0 in series play this season (6-7-0 on the road). Toronto has lost six of its last nine games, but has still gone 10-7 over its last 17 games and 13-9 over the last 22…With a win tonight, can improve to 14-10 in series openers this year.
HOT START, HORWITZ: Spencer Horwitz made his MLB debut on Sunday afternoon in Arlington, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and a pair of walks…Notched his first career MLB hit by singling off Rangers starter Jon Gray in the top of the 2nd inning…Drove in his first MLB run the next inning with an RBI groundout…Became the fourth player in franchise history to record a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored in his MLB debut, joining Devon Travis (April 6, 2015 at NYY), Eric Thames (May 18, 2011 vs. TB), and Eric Hinske (April 1, 2002 at BOS).
SPRINGING INTO ACTION: George Springer singled twice yesterday, finishing the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base…Marked his 20th multi-hit effort of the season. Since May 19th, the Connecticut native has gone 35- for-111 (.315) with eight doubles, a triple, five home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 walks during his 29 contests… Over that span, ranks T-3rd among AL hitters in times on base (48), T-5th in total bases (60), 7th in OPS (.928), and 10th in OBP (.387).
WE’RE GOING STREAKING: Whit Merrifield went 1-for-4 on Sunday with two RBI and a walk, extending his hitting streak to a season-high-tying 10 games…Has gone 13-for-36 (.361) over that stretch with a pair of doubles and four RBI (.856 OPS)…Became the 5th player in the Majors
this season with multiple hitting streaks of at least 10 games. Since May 19th, is hitting .363 (37-for-102) with six doubles, a homer, 12 RBI, and nine walks (.425 OBP, .876 OPS) in 29 games…Over that span, ranks 5th in the Majors in batting average…On the season, sits 4th in the AL in AVG (.305) and T-5th in stolen bases (18).
TWICE THE FUN: Bo Bichette plated a pair of runs with a double in the 2nd inning yesterday, his 16th two-bagger of the season…Doubled in five straight games, becoming the 3rd Major Leaguer to do so this season (Bryan Reynolds – 6G, Ryan Mountcastle – 5G)…The only longer double streak in his career was a franchisebest nine-gamer in his rookie season (July 31-Aug. 8, 2019), which began in his 3rd career MLB game. The shortstop currently leads MLB in hits (98)…His .315 batting average ranks 2nd in the AL (6th in MLB), while he sits 2nd in total bases (158), 6th in SLG (.508), 7th in OPS (.855), T-7th in XBH (31), T-9th in home runs (14), and 10th in RBI (46).
BERRÍ, BERRÍ GOOD: José Berríos will take the hill for his 15th start of the season tonight…The 29-year old has recorded eight quality starts this season, five of which have come in his last six games…Has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his last eight outings…Over his last 12 starts, has gone 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA (19 ER/75.1 IP) and a 1.08 WHIP…His ERA over that span (since April 14) ranks 3rd among MLB pitchers.
