Red Sox announce roster moves August 31

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

 

Selected right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock to the active major league roster. He will wear number 44.

Reinstated outfielder Hunter Renfroe from the Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency List.

Selected left-handed pitcher Stephen Gonsalves to the active major league roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 78.

Placed left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor and right-handed pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.

Returned right-handed pitcher Raynel Espinal to the Worcester roster following last night’s game against the Rays.

Peacock, 33, was acquired yesterday from the Cleveland Indians. In 181 career major league appearances (83 starts), he has gone 34-30 with three saves and a 4.01 ERA (247 ER/554.2 IP) for the Washington Nationals (2011) and Houston Astros (2013-20). From 2016-18, Peacock posted a 3.23 ERA (82 ER/228.2 IP), notably going 13-2 in 2017. In 11 games (10 starts) for Triple-A Columbus this season, he went 0-4 with a 7.68 ERA (29 ER/34.0 IP). A Florida native, Peacock last pitched on August 27, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings against Memphis.

 

Renfroe, 29, ranks second in the American League with 10 home runs in August. In 115 games this season, he has hit .258 (105-for-407) with 25 home runs, 77 RBI, and an .817 OPS. He leads the majors with 14 outfield assists, having made 108 starts in right field and three in center field.

 

Gonsalves, 27, has made seven major league appearances (four starts), all with the Minnesota Twins in 2018. He has spent the entire 2021 season with Worcester, going 4-4 with a 4.97 ERA (37 ER/67.0 IP) with 12.36 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (92 strikeouts) in 17 games (10 starts).

 

Taylor, 28, has appeared in a career-high 54 games this season, posting a 3.38 ERA (16 ER/42.2 IP) with 54 strikeouts. In 45 outings since April 30, the left-hander has recorded a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP), a 1.19 WHIP, and a .195 opponent batting average.

 

Sawamura, 33, has posted a 3.09 ERA (16 ER/46.2 IP) with 10.41 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (54 strikeouts) over 50 appearances for Boston this season, his major league debut. The right-hander ranks among American League rookies in appearances (5th) and holds (T-6th, 10).

 

Espinal, 29, made his major league debut last night, throwing 2.0 innings of relief and allowing two runs on two hits and one walk. The right-hander has made 18 appearances (16 starts) for Worcester, going 9-4 with a 3.74 ERA (38 ER/91.1 IP) and a .203 opponent batting average.
