WHAT TO WATCH FOR
DOWN TO GEORGIA
When Georgia State hosts UNC at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on ESPNU, it will be the first time an autonomy five opponent has visited Center Parc Stadium. The Panthers boast a veteran presence in both the secondary—senior cornerback Quavian White and junior safety Antavious Lane are tied for the program record with nine career interceptions—and the backfield—senior running backs Tucker Gregg and Jamyest Williams each sit among the top seven career rushers in program history. The Tar Heels narrowly escaped App State with a 63-61 victory in Week 1.
TANGLING WITH THE TOP 15
Four Sun Belt teams will visit Top 15-ranked opponents in Week 2. Southern Miss will travel to No. 15/16 Miami at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on ACC Network; Arkansas State will take on No. 3/3 Ohio State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on Big Ten Network; Marshall will visit No. 8/9 Notre Dame at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on NBC and App State will take on No. 6/6 Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on ESPN2.
RETURN OF THE MAC
South Alabama senior quarterback Carter Bradley, who spent four years at Toledo, will face a familiar Mid-American Conference foe in Central Michigan when the Jaguars visit Kelly/Shorts Stadium at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on ESPN+. The Jaguars defeated the lone MAC opponent on their schedule— Bowling Green, 22-19—a year ago. Reigning Sun Belt champion Louisiana will also put its national-best 14-game winning streak on the line against a MAC opponent when Eastern Michigan comes into Cajun Field at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on NFL Network. Like South Alabama, Louisiana bested the lone MAC foe on its schedule—Ohio, 49-14—in 2021.
MONARCH MAGIC
A week after unseating in-state foe Virginia Tech, 20-17, in front of a sellout crowd of 21,944—something the team had actually done in 2018 by a 49-35 margin—Old Dominion will look to do something that has never been done in program history—defeat East Carolina. The Pirates were a closing-seconds wide-right field goal away from a signature victory of their own in Week 1 and own a 3-0 mark in the all-time series with the Monarchs, with the last two meetings being decided by three points or less.
EVERYTHING’S NEW AGAIN
After winning the first game of the Clay Helton era, Georgia Southern will put its new-look offense on display against a new opponent in a new state at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, on FS1. The Eagles will play their first-ever game in the state of Nebraska with their first-ever matchup against the Cornhuskers. Sixth-year quarterback Kyle Vantrease—coming off just the sixth 300-yard passing game in program history with a 367-yard effort in Week 1—will look to become the first-ever Eagle to post back-to-back 300-yard passing performances.
