OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s optioned left-handed pitcher Sam Moll to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The move clears a spot on the 26-man roster for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs yesterday with cash considerations for outfielder Greg Deichmann and minor league right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia.
Moll was acquired from Arizona on July 2 in a minor league cash deal and joined the A’s the next day. He pitched three times for Oakland and did not allow a run in 2.2 innings. Opponents were 1-for-9 but he walked three batters.
Chafin is 0-2 with a 2.06 ERA and .154 opponents batting average in 43 relief appearances with the Cubs. He ranks third among National League relievers in opponents OPS (.461), fifth in opponents slugging percentage (.228), seventh in ERA, eighth in opponents batting average and ninth in on-base percentage (.233). Chafin is tied for 10th in the NL in games pitched. The 31-year-old left-hander had a career-high 24.1-inning scoreless streak snapped in his last outing on Saturday against Arizona and has not allowed a run in 39 of his 43 appearances.
