Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Selected outfielder Rob Refsnyder to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester.
  • Designated infielder Jonathan Araúz for assignment.
  • Placed right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock on the 15-Day Injured List with right hip inflammation, retroactive to June 9.
  • Recalled right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Refsnyder, 31, is batting .306 (45-for-147) with 31 runs scored, 14 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBI, 28 walks and a .953 OPS in 42 games for Worcester this season. The right-handed hitter has also appeared in three games for Boston, going 2-for-5 (.400) with one RBI while making one start in right field and appearing in two games at designated hitter.

Araúz, 23, has appeared in six games with the Red Sox this season, going 0-for-10 with an RBI and a run scored. The switch-hitter most recently started at shortstop for the club in Los Angeles last night.

Whitlock, 25, has made nine starts and four relief appearances for Boston this season, going 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA (19 ER/48.2 IP). In 59 Major League outings—all with the Red Sox—he is 10-5 with a 2.58 ERA (35 ER/122.0 IP), 130 strikeouts, and 28 walks.

Valdez, 30, has posted a 5.84 ERA (8 ER/12.1 IP) in 10 appearances for Boston this season, recording a 0.97 WHIP and .167 opponent batting average. The right-hander has also posted a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP) in six outings for Worcester.
