White Sox make five roster moves

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. Baltimore, the Chicago White Sox made the following four roster moves:

· Placed OF Adam Engel on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring;

· Placed INF Danny Mendick on the 10-day injured list with a torn ACL in his right knee;

· Recalled INF/OF Gavin Sheets from Class AAA Charlotte;

· Selected the contract of INF Lenyn (“len-EEN) Sosa from Class AA Birmingham;

· Transferred OF Eloy Jiménez to the 60-day injured list. Jiménez is eligible to be reinstated as early as today.

Engel, 30, suffered the injury in the third inning of yesterday’s game vs. Toronto. He is batting .240/.297/.349 (35-146) with 11 doubles, one home runs, 10 RBI, 18 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 56 games this season.

Mendick, 28, suffered his injury in the second inning of yesterday’s game vs. the Blue Jays. He is hitting .289/.343/.443 (28-97) with four doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI and 22 runs scored in 31 games this season.

Sheets, 26, is hitting .270/.308/.541 (10-37) with four doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in nine games with Charlotte. He also appeared in 44 games with the White Sox, batting .204/.268/.328 (28-137) with five doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI in 44 games before being optioned on June 10.

Sosa, 22, is hitting .331/.384/.549 (85-257) with 10 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 48 RBI and 47 runs scored in 62 games with Birmingham this season. He leads the Southern League in average, hits, RBI, runs scored and ranks among the leaders in slugging percentage (4th), OPS (4th, .933), home runs (T4th) and on-base percentage (8th)

Sosa, 6-foot and 205 pounds, was named SL Player of the Month for May after hitting .351/.388/.649 (39-111) with eight homers, 26 RBI and 22 runs scored in 26 games.

Sosa, originally was signed by the White Sox as an international free agent on July 2, 2016. A native of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, he has no major-league experience. Sosa will wear uniform No. 50.

Jiménez, 25, has been on the injured list since April 24 with a right hamstring tendon tear and is eligible to be reinstated today. He has played in two games with Charlotte since restarting his rehabilitation assignment on Tuesday.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
