CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. the Yankees, the Chicago White Sox added right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell to the active roster and optioned left-hander Sammy Peralta to Class AAA Charlotte.
Honeywell, 28, was claimed off waivers from San Diego on Saturday after going 2-4 with a 4.05 ERA (21 ER/46.2 IP), three holds and 42 strikeouts in 36 relief appearances with the Padres this season. He worked at least 1.0 IP in 31 of his outings.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Honeywell signed with San Diego on January 6 after spending the 2022 season in the Oakland minor-league system. He is 2-4 with a 4.41 ERA (25 ER/51.0 IP) and 46 strikeouts in 39 career appearances (two starts) with Tampa Bay (2021) and the Padres (2023).
Honeywell originally was selected by the Rays as a competitive balance selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Walters State (Tenn.) Community College.
Peralta, 25, has made five relief appearances over two stints with the Sox this season, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts over 4.1 IP.
