Conference News and Notes
The Big 12 closes out the final two weeks of the regular season with all teams in action both weeks in conference matchups.
Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are the teams still in contention for a spot in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game. Clinch scenarios are on page 2.
The Big 12 has three teams in the top 13 of the Nov. 9 CFP Poll with No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 10 Oklahoma State and No. 13 Baylor.
The Big 12 leads all conferences with sixty percent of teams bowl eligible. Every Big 12 team has a win in conference play.
The Big 12 finished the regular season with a .800 (24-6) win percentage in non-conference outings, good for second among FBS leagues. Four of the six losses were to other autonomy leagues. Among FBS leagues, the Big 12 is first in scoring (31.5), pass completion percentage (65.8), passer rating (149.6), rushing yards (174.0) and yards per play (7.4).
Sixty percent of Big 12 defenses are allowing less than 130 yards a game on the ground to rank in the NCAA top 36: 5. Oklahoma State (88.4), 18. Iowa State (112.4), 19. K-State (113.0), 26. Baylor (121.7), 33. West Virginia (126.2) and 36. Oklahoma (129.5).
Forty percent of Big 12 teams are holding opponents to under 22 points a game to rank among the FBS top 28: 7. Oklahoma State (16.3), 20. Baylor (19.9), 24. Iowa State (20.5) and 28. K-State (21.1).
In addition to ranking in the top 24 for scoring defense, OSU is third (276.6) and Iowa State is 10th (307.1) in total defense.
Sixty percent of Big 12 offenses average over 32 points a game to rank in the nation’s top 41: 8. Oklahoma (40.0), 13. Texas (37.8), 20.
Baylor (35.4), 30. Texas Tech (33.6), 38. Iowa State (32.5) and 41. Oklahoma State (32.2).
Kansas is the Cheez-It Bowl National Team of the Week after its overtime win at Texas. This is the fifth time for KU to earn the award from the FWAA and the Big 12’s second straight honor with TCU recognized last week.
Big 12 players of the week were awarded to Kansas’ Devin Neal (offensive), Baylor’s Terrel Bernard (defensive) and Texas Tech’s Jonathan Garibay (special teams) and Donovan Smith (newcomer).
QB Gerry Bohanon set a career-high with 107 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns to go with his 117 yards and a score through the air in Baylor’s win over No. 8 Oklahoma.
Iowa State’s Breece Hall set a school record for career points (306) and extended his conference-leading streak of consecutive games with a rushing TD to 22. The streak ties for second-best in NCAA FBS history, one off the record (23 by Arkansas’ Bill Burnett, 1968-70).
With a 57-56 overtime win over Texas, Kansas recorded its first conference road victory since October 4, 2008 at Iowa State (35-33) and its first win in Austin.
After a blocked punt return for a TD vs. WVU, K-State now has 125 non-offensive touchdowns since 1999 and 58 combined kickoff-and-punt-return touchdowns since 2005, the most nationally in both categories.
Oklahoma LB Brian Asamoah recorded 10 tackles (seven solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss at Baylor, both season highs, and forced a third quarter fumble which was recovered by fellow LB Nik Bonitto.
Oklahoma State’s 39.7-point average margin of victory over the past three weeks leads the FBS.
TCU scored for the 365th consecutive game. It’s the nation’s second-longest current streak and ties Michigan (1984-2014) for second all-time in NCAA history.
WR Xavier Worthy set the Texas freshman single-game record with his 14 receptions vs. KU, which is the second-most receptions in a single game in program history.
Jonathan Garibay’s game-winning kick of 62 yards marked the longest made field goal in the FBS this season, longest in Texas Tech history, second-longest in Big 12 history and the longest by a Big 12 kicker in a conference matchup.
QB Jarret Doege moved to No. 7 on West Virginia’s career passing yards list with 5,853.
