The Virginia Lottery has released its January 2025 report on sports wagering activity from licensed operators.
During the month of January, Virginians placed bets totaling $736,667,692, marking a 12.8% increase compared to January 2024. Currently, sports betting is authorized through fourteen mobile operators and three casinos across the state. A full list of approved operators is available under the “approvals” tab on their website.
Bettors in Virginia claimed $649,286,450 in winnings, resulting in an operators’ win percentage of 11.86%.
According to state law, a 15% tax is applied to the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of each permit holder, calculated as total wagers minus winnings and other allowable deductions. Of this tax revenue, 97.5% is allocated to the state’s General Fund, while 2.5% supports the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, which is managed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
For January, eleven operators reported positive AGR, leading to $12.1 million in state tax contributions.
