Tigers agree to terms With right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Detroit Tigers announced that they have agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Michael Pineda on a one-year contract.

Pineda, 33, made 22 appearances, including 21 starts, with Minnesota in 2021, posting a 9-8 record with a 3.62 ERA (109.1IP/44ER) and 88 strikeouts. Pineda was one of the best strike throwers in the Majors, throwing 69 percent of his pitches for strikes, the fourth-highest percentage in the big leagues (min. 100.0 innings pitched). He turned in some of his best performances at the end of the season, going 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA (24.1IP/5ER) and 15 strikeouts in his final five appearances, including four starts. Pineda led the Majors in wins during September, while he was third in the American League and eighth in MLB in ERA (min. 20.0 innings).

An eight-year veteran who has spent time with Seattle (2011), New York (AL) (2014-17) and Minnesota (2019-21), Pineda has a career record of 62-54 with a 3.98 ERA (962.0IP/425ER) and 940 strikeouts in 170 appearances, including 169 starts. He was selected to the AL All-Star Team as a rookie in 2011 and finished fifth in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

A native of Yaguate, DR, Pineda was originally signed by Seattle as an international free agent on December 12, 2005. He was traded by the Mariners to the Yankees in exchange for Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi on January 23, 2012. He was signed by the Twins as a free agent on December 13, 2017 and resigned with the team on December 10, 2019.

With Pineda’s signing, the Tigers 40-man roster is now at 40.
