The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has announced that 34-year-old Romanian tennis player Petru-Alexandru Luncanu has been suspended from the sport for five years following multiple violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP).
The case was reviewed by independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer (AHO) Raj Parker, who upheld five out of seven charges brought by the ITIA related to match-fixing activities in 2017 and 2021, as well as an additional charge for failing to fully cooperate with the ITIA’s investigation in 2022.
AHO Parker determined that Luncanu, who achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of 304 in 2009, had violated the TACP by manipulating the outcome or other aspects of several matches and by directly or indirectly facilitating tennis wagering.
Additionally, AHO Parker found that Luncanu failed to fully cooperate with the ITIA investigation by withdrawing consent for the analysis of his mobile phone when requested by an ITIA investigator.
Despite denying all charges, Luncanu will be prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis event authorized or sanctioned by the governing bodies of tennis until June 8, 2028. He has also been fined $40,000.
The ITIA is an independent body established by the International Governing Bodies of Tennis to promote, encourage, enhance, and safeguard the integrity of professional tennis worldwide.
